U.S. (route) 41 goes E-W before it goes N-S into the tip of the U.P..
The horn area is actually an island since a canal was dug.  The southern end city is Hancock while the northern end is Houghton.  The horn area was all copper mines.  Calumet is one of the six historical cities in the US. This area averages 280 inches of snow each winter.  I can't remember if the most they've had was 330 inches, but it should be close to that.

On southbound US 41 and four miles north of Houghton is the sign you see here.
