Title: Clear Transparent Sheet on Canvas
Post by: DrawNPaint on October 20, 2011, 09:29:30 PM
I applied a clear transparent contact sheet on my canvas before painting the background as you mentioned and it worked great! I did do something a little different that I had learned from your color wheel course  for the background. Being that the flower is going to be of the reddish hue I made the background on the blue side of things. I think this flower is really going to pop off the canvas when it's finished.  :heeha: What helped me to decide on blue was also learned when you made mention of using watercolor pencils to draw out the image. I generally would have used a regular graphite pencil but in this painting I had used a red watercolor pencil for the flower. We'll see what happens but I think this is going to be really good! Ohh, we are having fun!  :yippee:

Thanks to all for the great art instructions!

First let me say that I've misplaced my reading glasses. I think I'm seeing a series of rings/outlines around the flower....may be my eyes or possibly the picture. In any case, if there are, would it be better to blend them for a smoother transition?
Nice to see a different flower, looks like you're off to a great start.
Must find those glasses....

Yeap Val, the watercolor pencil lines don't show up too good on the monitor but maybe in this next image you can see the difference. I hadn't thought of blending the watercolor pencil lines but next painting I'll give a try and see what happens. Thanks for the art tip.

off to a great start Lloyd.

The rings Val is talking about are the shades in the background that were not quite blended together perfectly. So just look out for that in future paintings O0

I too look forward to seeing how you progress with this. I've bookmarked.
Putting in the deep red has made it pop!  Good luck.

No problem Lloyd....nice to know Nolan is also a good interpreter!  :2funny: He knows no bounds!

The red in the flower makes it come alive, I'm starting to get a liking for the vibrancy of some colours. (Found the glasses behind the computer screen)  ::)

Gerber Daisies wonderful C.Bodine. All kinds of colors, large, medium and small. If your interested there's free grid drawing pattern of the one I'm painting on this page on the top left side. Just click on the image or link and it opens as a PDF file that you can printout.

Kinda changed the background a little. No more rings. Added some white puffy clouds. Seems to push the flower off the canvas now. Have to finish the leaves at another time.

I thank everyone for the lovely comments!  I love the change also. It kinda makes the flower painting standout in an almost 3D effect. Particularly near the edges of the petals near it's center. I'm thinking because the clouds are actually painted with a bit of light blue and the flower petals are red is what does it.

Nolan, I think you should do a thing on clouds. Storm clouds, sunset clouds, rainy clouds and on and on. I say this because I created a web page on clouds a ways back, back, back, long time. I haven't had time to change it except for today and that was a very small change. I really need to get to it.  :fight:

It's that it's number 2 on my most visited web pages of my sites. Why, I don't know.  ???  I figure lots of people are interested in learning to paint clouds of all sorts.  656 page views per month average.

Yep lot's of people are watching. The pressure is on. Just one problem. Sorry, I forgot. I may be watching a little bit of Sunday night football.  :yippee: It's kind of hard to concentrate while moving from the TV to the canvas. Tell you what. I'll do some painting during halftime. Either way when it's done I'll put up an image. Just may be off on the timing a tad bit.  :flowers:

Post by: DrawNPaint on November 06, 2011, 03:47:23 AM
Well it's getting there.  :coffee: I thought I'd been a little further with this painting but I find myself busy with the leaves. I've done one under painting, a second under painting and a third. From the art techniques I've learn from the Paint Basket, it seems on each painting session I find I'm doing more detailing making the leaves look more realistic. I feel I can pluck this flower right off the canvas. It's taking a little bit of time but man I am having a whale of a good day.  :yippee:

Of course I would like to thank Paint Basket in showing the many art techniques, such as how to use the color wheel. Flower painting videos and art instructions. This is great! Without with I would not be doing this. Oh, and the happy faces.  ;)

Red and green - opposite (complimentary)
Orange and blue - opposite (complimentary)
Red and yellow - harmonious

Beautiful painting.

Yes, it does pop. Just added it to my gallery with comments. Only a little talent thegrindre. I had the same problem with getting paint out of the tubes too. I solved it by snipping the folded end of the tubes. If I was in a hurry I'd use a rubber mallet wearing a rain coat.  :2funny:

I like your Purple Tulip with the water drops C.Bodine. O0 I still have to try painting some of those. Happy you liked my artist web site with it's paintings. But now I have to find and figure out my artist market on how to sell them. I've struggled with this for a time.  :-\ Hopefully it doesn't last much longer.

Great meeting you Lloyd.  Really love your painting... the flower truly pops.

I followed the link to your website and from there the link to FAA... see I'm also an FAA'er.  Put you on my watchlist.

Do you perhaps have a Facebook FanPage?

I did a bit of marketing on 2 of your paintings on FAA  (Yellow Lilly and Fountain Inn's Name)...  :D I favourited and voted for them (that helps with pushing them forward on the Google listing)... I tweeted and Stumbled them both ...as well as marketed them on my Facebook FanPage.  Would be great to know what the response on your FAA page is from this bit of marketing.  :heeha: ... you will have to check the total visits on them and should get an idea.  Hope it helped a bit  :)

Hello Leana, Thank you for putting me on your watchlist.  This is my Facebook page link :

I really do appreciate the help with FAA and others.  O0 It is a learning experience for me. I'm almost there but need some more time to learn marketing.  I will check this to see what happens and will exchange the favor for your artworks. Thanks much.  :thankyou:

You are most welcome  ;D .  Always great helping out a fellow artist  :yippee:... so I do it with pleasure  O0.

I clicked on your facebook link... that is your personal profile... if you look on that page, right at the bottom in the smaller print where it says> 'Facebook' 'about' 'advertising'...then it says 'Create a page'... you then click on 'create a page' and just follow from there.  You can synchronize your FAA and Facebook FanPage... so then when you do an upload on FAA, it can post directly to your Facebook FanPage automatically and inform the people whom has 'liked' your page that there is new artwork on FAA.

Here is the link to my Facebook FanPage... then you can see what mine looks like ... they all have a 'like' button.  https://www.facebook.com/ArtOfMOW (https://www.facebook.com/ArtOfMOW) ... What is great about the FanPage is that it is totally seperate from your personal page, yet when you sign into your personal page...you access your fanpage through that...it is linked and you can go between the 2.

I don't know how active you are on FAA and if you belong to any groups... but if you look at my profile...next to my name (will be next to your name too...but that will be your info etc)... there is a menu bar... with 'images', 'galleries', 'events', 'blogs' etc... on that menu bar is a link 'groups'... those are all the groups I belong to and those groups are very active groups overall especially in the group discussions too (which is seperate from the main discussion forum.  Loads of info there about marketing as well as in the main discussion forum....which falls under 'community'.

Great discussion thread currently going on 'Easy Marketing Tips that can Help Increase Your Sales' in the
Self Taught Artists Group... and was started by an artist that used to work in the Marketing field.

There are also Facebook FanPage, StumbleUpon and Google+ topics going in the main and group discussions.

Hope this all helps a bit.  If you have any questions or need  :help: in anyway... please do not hesitate to ask   ;)

Dear Shweta;

If you are looking for clear sheets to cover a canvas, which will
protect an image while you're painting the background, then head for
your nearest Wal-Mart.  Look in the kitchen shelving section and you
should find rolls of clear plastic sheets.  Be sure to get the Clear not the
frosted one.   They come in small rolls for about 4.99 Cnd. or the larger one for
8.99 Cnd.   I used it when I painted the 'Realistic Rose'.  It worked like a charm.

The backing is just slightly tacky and peals off the canvas easily.

I hope this helps.

Maybe you've found your clear plastic sheets by now.  If not, they are in office suppliers.  Ask for transparencies like the kind for overhead projectors used before power point became popular, very inexpensive.  Tape together if you need larger size.
