Title: Mea's Pen/Ink Wash Pieces
Post by: MaryAnne Long on December 25, 2016, 02:42:03 AM
This is the Golden Plover (Kolea in Hawaiian).  It's a small 4 x 6 piece.  I hope to make a bigger, better one to use for souvenir postcards at the Sony Open golf tournament in January.

I think I am still going too strong on the washes.  I can't seem to find the right amount of water.

Please let me know what to do to make it better.  I think the beak is a bit too big, but that's actually the length in my reference photo.  Gotta make the shape better maybe.

The Plover is very nicely done Mea. It does take some practicing to get the water/paint ratio correct, do you use a test strip to check the strength of colour? I keep a small piece of spare w/c paper with some ink lines drawn on it to check my colour strength.

It seems your Plover's bill has the same problem I gave Edgar! Keeping the the upper and lower lines of the bill straight is a bit harder than we think!

Wash strength aside, it's still very well done!  O0 O0 O0

Thanks, Patricia.  My son gave me three Escoda sable round brushes for Christmas.  Hope to put them to good use immediately.

Thanks, Steve.  Will work on the wash.

Val, I am saving the cut off parts of the cropped painting now to use for test trips.

Here is the larger piece, 11 x 14 on hemp paper.

I used the test strips as Val suggested and it helped.

With the body of the bird so detailed, it is hard to get the loose wash look that I want.  Guess that will come with practice.

The new brushes helped quite a bit.  Love the #10 round.

Please let me know what else this needs as it needs to be sent to Vistaprint this weekend to make postcards for the Sony Open golf tournament again in mid-January.

O0 I think your P&I wash looks great Mea. You have the soft wash look in the background. The deeper tones in the bird help to make him the focal point. I love it on the hemp paper.  :congrats:

It makes me smile  :) to think that you were afraid to try this medium. Look at you go!  :yippee:

Every one gets better Mea. I found with the line and wash the only way I could lose the hardness and loosen up was to take a deep breath, and allow some of the detail colour to bleed just a bit.    I actually leave the room at that point so I don't get a panic attack and try to stop it!  :2funny:   Courage Mea, you will find your way.  O0

I need to have three paintings ready for a new exhibit at Honolulu Country Club by January 15.  I have  decided to make all three line and wash pieces as the theme is "Play It Forward."  So we are being challenged to play up our newest artwork.

Well, this is it - Makapu`u Lighthouse on the south east coast of Oahu.

I still have time to tweak it, so please give me your thoughts to make it better.  It is 11 x 14 on HEMP paper.

This is my own composition, using the rose and hibiscus leaves from my garden.  I got the glass vase from a thrift shop.

I really love doing the line and wash.

This type of painting was requested by my senior citizens for our class this week.

Sorry about the mess I made of the shadow - I really need to do better with shadows.

Thanks Win, Val, and Gita for the comments on the lighthouse.  Yes, Gita, I have come a long way from "cannot."

Mea, this is awesome  :heeha:   even awesomer than awesome!!! It's brilliant.

The shadow is so slight you could just fade away what you have and it would be fine. The transparency of the vase is excellent, the detailing of the leaves and flower.... banner job.  O0

I took the skills I learned in Nolan's Pencil class on drawing an owl and applied them to an Ink drawing. (I actually penciled it in first, then inked it so that I could erase any mistakes.)

I did it FREEHAND!!!  Really.  I can't believe I did it without any tracing!  So pleased.

I wanted you to see it before I add the color wash.  Any suggestions before I start?

Just saw all these,  really great improvement over only a few paintings

I like the way you leave just a bit of white on your paper.  It really pop up the wash.

Your owl is good.  I would just add a bit of shadow where the wing attached to the body, to make the wing more distinctive... but I don't know if this effect should be done with the ink or with the wash.

Looking forward to see it done.

Thanks, Val, EmmaLee, Steve, Patricia, Annie, and Mary Lou.  Hope to get the wash on today.  The shadowing will come with the wash.

Not sure about a background yet.  Any thoughts?

One artist friend here in Hawaii suggested I make copies of this inked version, then wash them all differently to see which I like best, before I touch the original with water.  Going to try that.

Thanks, Gita, Patricia, and Annie.

I tried to make copies on my hemp paper, but the HP Ink Jet would not take it, so I am making the first try on oaktag.  I just wanted something that was heavier than copy paper.

We'll see what happens.  I am going to stick pretty much with yellow ochre and brownish earth tones for the wash.

I will post it again  BEFORE I do a background.

Here's my first test painting - primarily yellow ochre and burnt sienna.  I copied the owl onto oaktag (hoping it would not buckle like copy paper).  It didn't, BUT my yellows turned green on the paper.  UGH.

Tried to print on hemp paper, but the copier would not take it.  Will try again on copy paper to see if I get clearer colors.  Oh, the background is a light wash of ultramarine blue and viridian because the paper was so dark, nothing else seemed to show up.

I am open to all suggestions for the next test wash.

Thanks, Fiona.  What makes me most happy is that I can see and feel my progress.

Here is the final version (unless someone sees something I missed).  Actually this is the fourth photo I have taken of this in the past 10 minutes because I found something to change on each preceding one.  I like the background better on the test version, but that's because the paper was darker to begin with.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and encouragement.  My only regret is that this is actually only 4 x 6 - now I need to do a big one sometime.

Getting back in the swing of things after the trip to Las Vegas.

This lighthouse came out pretty well, but I saw needs for tweaking as soon as I posted it.

I did this Desert Poppy for my friend who hosted me in Las Vegas.

Tried a line and wash on the wrong kind of paper and used too much water!  Awful shadows so cut off the bottom of the watering can.

I also did a lot of sketching while there.  I will post those in the pencil section.

Am getting quite fond of line and wash. Here's Diamond Head Lighthouse with a gouache wash.  This is actually a 4 x 6" postcard (Strathmore).

I just put it on Facebook (my friends and family page, not my art page) and the first person to LIKE it will get it mailed to him or her.

Mea... have been following your progress... love the lighthouse particularly. I like the fact that it's a real lighthouse, not a romanticized fantasy lighthouse. (I'm a former boatee, like Val still is). And the Owl.  Have been telling myself to try smaller paintings and sketches, but somehow I don't seem to be able to do anything smaller than A4 (std photocopier paper size) and more usually launch into A3 (double A4) or larger. But they take so long to finish... I'm Still working on the same Einstein portrait I started back in May... Mind you that's probably lack of experience ... I should take some portrait lessons and then I might make progress... At the moment his face changes colour each day.. orange, green, purple, at the moment the skin tone is perfect... if he was Gandhi... But I digress... Reading your posts, and Liz's, makes me think I should quit fooling around on this computer, and start doing some vignettes (Is that the correct term?)

Thank you, Linley.  I am enjoying line and wash much more than I thought I would.  I was terrified to use ink when I first saw Paintbasket offer it.

Yes, for me (and Liz), small works well.

I enjoy your sense of humor - that Einstein/Gandhi face color story being a perfect example.

So happy you found us on Paintbasket.

This will be a gift for my sister who was just elected Superior General of her congregation of nuns which spans 14 countries on 4 continents.  She will move to Rome in November for six years to assume her duties.

It is a line and wash of the dome of St. Peter Basilica at the Vatican, as seen from the garden side.  Will fit an 11 x 14 inch mat.

Mea, I love the drawing of the building, really like the painting generally. The only possible improvement... maybe the treee on the artist's left  is a bit sparse, but I can't tell you how to improve it. But I don't think you really have anything to worry about. Maybe you should sign it Da Vinci or Michael Angelo if your sister is really posh?

Mea, the building is great.  I agree with Linley about the tree.  What I see is that the tree is too symmetrical and straight.  The tree on the right looks more like a feather...the branches form v's...should be more random.  With those two fixes, you will have an excellent painting.

Oops, realized I neglected to wish congratulations to your sister.  You must be proud!

Thanks, Maryna.  Darn, this will be the second time I have changed it.

Nolan explained to me that it has to do with the photos that were lost in the glitch.  Now, if we enter a new photo in the gallery, it gets one of the lost numbers.  If the person who had the number has not removed the old number and put in a new photo, the wrong photo goes up.  (Not sure that was the right way to say it.)

This is going to be a Happy New Year card for my niece.  She is getting married in 2018 near this lighthouse.

I think line and wash is the perfect medium for lighthouses.

I feel good about this, but still have a few hours if you think it needs some changes.   Ooops, the little shed's lines are not straight enough.  I'll fix that.  Oh, and the windows on the large building aren't correct.   Hmmm, guess I was in too much of a hurry to finish it.  I'll fix it in the morning.

Anemone for a Birthday Card. Made with Arteza Woodless WC Pencils (LOVE these) using my new favorite color Blue Denim. The background is actually some new KOH-I-NOOR cream colored drawing paper, 90lb. I love it for line and wash. Got in on sale at Fisher Hawaii last week.

Wonder why the paper came out blue (not cream) in the photo? I shot the photo outside today but the sun was behind the clouds.  I've already sealed the card in the envelop so will do another one on cream -colored paper and take a photo of it indoors.  If that one comes out with a blue background, I will have to surmise that it's the paper that is making it blue, not the daylight.

I really like these.  I like the looseness with the detail over it.  The colors are pretty.  Very appealing.

I think less detail in the flower would be better, just hints of petals, here and there...just my thought...as I think the all those little outlined flowers are a distraction...see what others think.
