This was a good lesson for me on blending and observation. I was doing real good until Nolan told us to take over on our own after about 3/4 was done! I was going to put this in the I'll work on this another day bin ( you know what happens to those, LOL) when I took a deep breath and finished it..critiques please

So one of my goals for 2017 was to take more oil painting classss. I started this months ago, than got very overwhelmed. Decided to try to finish it this week. Of course if I had known Nolan wasn't going to finish the lesson in the video tape, I probably never would have attempted this! But then again, it was good he did because it made push myself past my comfort zone. As someone new to oil painting, this was probably too advanced for me. So that's why I'm open to any and all suggestions to improve this from those of you who are more seasoned oil painters. Dang - it sure is a messy medium!!

Also, for those who have painted this (and seeing how few have posted their paintings should have been another clue not to attempt this!) how did you paint the sides?

Well, it's been a lifetime or two since I painted with oils, but I must say as a newcomer to oils this is pretty darn amazing.

I agree with Patricia, you have done a fabulous job with this paint :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

It is actually a perfect painting for beginners as it is nothing more than a ton of shading work. Paintings like these teach you to spot your tonal values correctly without having to worry too much about the colour mixing side of things.

PS - Oil is only messy in the beginning. You soon learn to work neatly and before you know it you paint without getting dirty.

Tip - if you do see you have a spot somewhere it shouldn't be. Stop clean up the spot. See where you have other marks, clean them, then go hunt to see what caused the spot in the first place so you don't repeat O0

Thank you Patricia and Nolan! And the more I look at my painting the more I love it! Can't wait for it to dry so I can put it in a frame.

And Nolan - it was a brilliant lesson for teaching me not only how to add shade, but I eventually understood about lightly brushing to blend. In watercolors im so used to resting my arm on the paper when painting. I have to learn not to do that with oils - which means I need to have a much steadier hand!

This was an excellent class, Nolan. Thank you! I feel like a kid in a candy store as I figure out what class next to take  in oils!

Brave you for trying oils Sharon, and a fabulouse job you have done with the rose

\I have very little patience for the waiting to dry period so it will be the last on my list of to dos, but I like its ability for me to move it around  unlike watercolour that has a mind of its own in my hands.  :2funny:
Title: Re: Rose (Close Up)
Post by: nolan on August 03, 2017, 10:28:06 PM
what you want to do to help you steady your hand is use one of your large brushes as a mahl stick O0
alternately a glass of wine also helps ??? >:D
Title: Re: Rose (Close Up)
Post by: Sacgal/Sharon on August 09, 2017, 04:06:26 AM
:thankyou: Win! And I'm using water based oils, which seem to be drying pretty fast. Or maybe it's the 95 degree temps here!! And since I have no idea what a mahl stick is, Nolan, I'll go with your suggestion of a glass of wine!!
Title: Re: Rose (Close Up)
Post by: Val on August 09, 2017, 12:07:22 PM
A mahl stick is used to rest/steady your hand when working across a painting, also stops you putting your hand, arm, elbow in the wet paint. Or in my case... pastel.    I just use a long dowel with a small rubber ball on the end covered with tape.

There are all kinds of gadgety ones that attach to easels in the art shops.
Title: Re: Rose (Close Up)
Post by: TeresaM on August 10, 2017, 02:42:53 AM
Well done Sharon don't see anything to change

I tried oils and also found them messy and smelly, although they do allow you to blend the colours on the canvas. I'm sticking to acrylics and watercolour.
Regarding painting the the edges of the canvas place some cans or other  objects under it to hold it free and just paint  around the edges and then let dry. But if you are framing  the canvas then I don't think you need to worry

Thanks Teresa and Annie! And water based oils don't smell and are much easier to clean up!! Val-I saw Nolan use a large paintbrush in the spoons class to prop up his arm - I'll be trying that!!

I enjoyed working on this one  :smitten:! I did the base colors in Acrylics - it would not blend smoothly so the following day I painted over it with Oils.

I have to say this! Though Oil is messy (rather I am messy with oils) but it does give you time to think! With Acrylics there is just layers to cover up stuff if you did something out of place. I think I will like oils eventually too!  :) :)

Reflections:
Acrylics are forgiving when you are short on time!
Oils are forgiving when you are short on skill!

 :thankyou:, Nolan!

:thankyou: JayJ - Thank you for the encouragement. I am sorry to learn about your allergy. And you know what///  that explains the severe headaches I have been having for the past 1 week! The turps are getting to my head - if that's how you say it  :2funny: Yea its certainly the solvents I am trying - there is a thinner to clean brushes and then there is distilled turpentine that I use for dipping briefly before I pick up another color! I need to check the ventilation in my room too!  :o Thanks you solved a problem for me.  :thankyou:

:thankyou: Maryna - oil does glide smoothly, love how butter like it is, I can imagine following your path and doing more flowers in oils... in fact I want to pain this very same rose in 3 more different colors!!! Ginger,

Beautifully done, soft, and delicate.  Almost impossible to tell if it is real or a painting.

Oh my gosh, I must be way to critical of myself .  I just kept at it and finally decided it was enough.  Thank you all so much, my heart goes out to all of you.  I am so blest to have found this website and all of you.   ;)

Ginger, I have just the answer... you must learn to relax and not be so self critical...  like me!!!     :2funny:      I keep getting told I am far to critical of my work, they are most likely right. I have learned over time that when I start to think, ¨it seems to be missing something¨, or, ¨if I just¨... that´s the time to walk away, leave it for a few hours, or day(s), then take another look. Now when I feel unsure, I post it and see if anyone has any thoughts on it. It usually works! We have such an excellent resource in our artists here, don´t be afraid to use them. Most of them don´t even bite!!!

 O0 oh how true Val!
I too, plead “Guilty” to fiddling-and-ruining, being over-critical.
Leaving a work of art to rest,  really opens ones eyes to what one has really created.
