Title: More Scribbles By Val
Post by: Val on May 20, 2017, 08:49:18 PM
Having some issues uploading but managed to get these two so far.

The first sketch I spent about an hour with this delightful Blue Macaw in Antigua (Guatemala). He seemed quite happy to have my attention.

I am quite happy with how his beak turned out, the eye was better before the "if I just refine this a little...." One day I will learn...  ::)

This second 'sketch'  :2funny:   I barely had 5 minutes before I got pulled away to go in search of a restaurant. I'll take another crack at this one from one of the many photos I took of the arch. I doubt it would have come out well anyway, very poor angle for sketching. None the less, one of my many warts for your pleasure!  ;)    ;D

I love your Macaw, Val. I also like the beak. Well done.  :smitten:

Wow, Val, a bite from that beak would be quite painful.  Don't get too close.

Ta much Kathy and Mea. The upcoming sketches as well as these two were drawn with only a 2B pencil. My bag with all my sketch gear got left behind.  After searching through the town of Antigua I managed to find the equivalent of a small office depot. The best I could get was a box of 2B pencils, a cheap notebook, and a small eraser and sharpener.
Surprising how many values you can get out of a single pencil when you have to.

:heeha: You did that Macaw with a basic #2? I'm really impressed, Val. You got a lot of value out of one pencil.

I never fail to be surprised at the possibilities. Nothing more than layering and paying careful attention to pressure.

I was surprised to find anything there (expecting the usual HB), just had a look and they are made by Faber Castell! They look just like your old HB yellow school pencil with rubber top and all! They really hold a point which also surprised me. I really lucked out with these.

Will see if i can upload a couple more sketches today. My modem stick ran out so using the free wifi here. Not very strong and highly unreliable as usual.  ;)    ;D

 :thankyou:

Val, I am also so impressed with your Macaw's beak for it has a 3D look to it.  Fantastic job.

Ta ever so Patricia. Now if only I could get the rest of the bird as well done as the beak! Then I'd be getting somewhere!  :heeha:     :2funny:

The wifi here is running too slow to upload the next pair, so off to town tomorrow to get some time on the modem.  :run:

I am working on trying to sketch quicker, I always find myself getting caught up on some part and finishing it off.  :crazy2:   Just have to loosen up!  ;D

Before I started the drawing lessons, I was a bit before them, I had started doing portraits on my own. I loved the way they developed. As my sight has deteriorated somewhat I found I couldn't see the tones and values well enough, plus it would take me months/years sometimes to get close to finishing one. So, we move on.

I feel the pastel sticks may be giving me a new lease of sorts with their intensity and vibrancy. Will just have to see where they lead...

:heeha: Fast forward! I have been looking at Lynn's life drawings and pastel..... Lynn, you are just too good and I just feel I have to give it another go.     :faint:   I made a horrid quick sketch of a little girl while up in Antigua, and am having another go starting at more basic life drawings. Here we go.....

This little girl was with her mum selling weavings from their village. Never sat still more than 10 seconds!  :D

Crikey Lynn... this was supposed to be a timed 1 min. warm up... I took three and needed 30 more!  :2funny:   Kudos to you for your accomplishments.

Val,

Those are not bad.  If the girl had her eye's finished, then you would have been happier with the drawing.

I admire you for trying.  I went to one life drawing class and haven't been back.

I do better with charcoal Mea, much quicker and easier to adjust for tone. But, you play with the cards you're dealt!  ;) Not totally disgusted with it since I only had the one pencil (2B) to try and do this with. Yikes was that little fireball hyper!  :D   I hadn't seen a child like that since my son was a toddler!  :2funny:

The gentleman I'm actually reasonably pleased with. Sadly his right arm seems to have stretched a bit, when I drew the lines afterward his wrist was definitely below where it should have been. I'm just going to say that I think he must lift weights more with his left arm...hence the larger muscle mass...    The rest I think is not too bad.

I'm not putting this in Nolan's drawing lesson as I am only attempting the elephant. I've actually been going at this off and on since 12th of January last year! Did a tiny bit more today so thought I should get it out there. I have warned that some things can and have taken me a year or three to get done.  :crazy2:   But I don't give in easily.  :strong:     ;D   I am having great difficulties now with seeing the shadings especially with the graphite so may end up just drawing in pure black and white, could be interesting.  :D

Here he is so far, don't hesitate to give suggestions. I truly appreciate the help, and I really do want to get through this fellow.

Hi Val. Love the eyes. I feel the bit between the front legs should be more v-shaped and saggy baggy? on the other hand, she looks like a young elephant, so maybe she hasn't fully developed all her wrinkles? ;D Is she an Indian or African elephant?

Trying to see if this will upload for me. Another 12 hour marathon, still more to do on it, just started putting in some darks for the shadows when I had to pack it in. My little Zero (pen type) rubber has been working overtime cleaning up all the 'non-intentional' pencil lines...    certainly gives new meaning to the term 'freehanding'!  :2funny:    Sitting in rain and gale force conditions yet again.... still...  :boat:     The internet keeps going a bit wonky so we'll see what happens.

All of my sketchbook studies are done with a " uni KURU TOGA o.7 " mechanical pencil. I can't remember what lead is in it, but I think it is a 2B. I have a couple of these pencils, you can buy the refills in different hard/softness leads which I really like. I also have a 0.5 size.... I know it's on this boat somewhere!      :2funny:    What I really like is as you are writing/drawing, it has a mechanism that turns the lead, thereby keeping it sharp! To get the darks like those in my drawings, I just layer over top with very light pressure until it is as dark as I want it to be. Much easier than carrying numerous pencils about, and should I ever break the lead... not an issue, lots more by clicking the top.   :cloud9:

:thankyou: Val for the information about your mechanical pencil together with the picture of it and for your method of getting your darks so dark.  As you know, I have always admired your shading.  I have a Uniball mechanical pencil in my stash so will try it next time I do drawings. The secret in getting your darks so dark is layering lightly which I do do but perhaps not enough. So thanks again for your help.

Thanks for sharing the info on mechanical pencils.  Yes, I have that one, too.  I don't know how to fill any of them so when they run out of lead I buy a new one.

Two lessons learned:
1. Learn how to refill the darned things.
2. Use layering technique rather than press so hard and break the point.

You made my day, Val!

You are most welcome Patricia.

Mea, you do crack me up at times!  :2funny:    If you have the same model as mine (as in the photo), just pull out the rubber at the top and pop your new leads in. As our darling friend has said many times..... E-Z P-Z!!!   ;)   You can also get replacement rubbers.  Much more cost effective than keep buying whole new pencils!   :cost:

Patricia, I've started laying in some of the values/shadings. Hopefully you will be able to see where some of the different layers are building one on the other. Some areas on the pot are really tough to see, but I think you can see it on a couple of the mushroom stems.
I will be making the area of the pot between the two mushrooms much darker, that will probably take 3-4 more layers, working with a little more pressure each time.
Hope this helps you out.  :D

I found it helped tremendously when adding glazes in my w/c. I'm not advanced enough in my pastels to have a go at one with those... still doing penance for the placemat.      Just thought of something else I could try with the ball! Where's my sketchbook?!!!  :heeha:

Val,  :2funny: you have a way with words.

Bill, you are so right, Val has a way with words that often have me going hysterical with laughter. I get such a kick out of her.

 Just had to go back and see what I wrote.....      Bugga! I'll go fix that in a tick. Sorry 'bout that. (http://d326oobcc22bax.cloudfront.net/content/50345/1508247.GIF)

First here is another shaded ball sphere  ;) (better?) I did through the night. Still needs much more on the dark side, I'll get to that later. It is much easier to do on smooth paper. My sketchbook is rather rough and the paper is a buff/off-white colour. Both of which I have discovered make it more difficult. I might actually have to get out a second pencil to get it just right. I think it's starting to show the main idea.

Thank you very much Dennis.  :-*   This endeavour took just over 5 hours last night. It may be taking longer....but I can still do it!  :yippee:

  Love your sphere, Val...
So glad to know others revert to drawing such things, too,  when not knowing what to settle down to.
Mine is usually eyes.

Thanks Cath, I did do quite a bit of portrait sketching a few years back and I had 'eyes' stuck up all over the place to the point it started creeping Lloyd out so I went back to the spheres!  :2funny:

Thank you so much Zilpa. I decided if I really wanted to get back at my w/c and pastels and make a posh job of it, I really needed to bone up on the drawing and shading exercises. Good to know Nolan's lessons have me back on track.  O0

Crikey....that was close!   :2funny:

Having a couple more goes with people  :eyesclosed: They still give me the willies!  :2funny:

Got very daring last night and included a person AND a horse! (my first horse!)

Thank you Mea, nice to see you back online. I fear my computer may be next... I keep getting the dreaded blue screen more and more frequently. I'm told it is a matter of time before my computer meets its demise.  :eyesclosed:   Seems right on cue, they only seem to last about 3yrs. down here with the heat, humidity, and salt air. Then I'll have to learn a spanish keyboard if I want another computer!  :faint: That will be fun!  :2funny:

I think I have a good handle back on my shading now, just have to work more on my quick sketching and people(!). I'm open to any pointers you might like to share. Must improve there if I'm to go back out to plein air which I miss terribly.

Lucky for me, Val, my computer issues were programmatic, not mechanical.  Just a few tweaks to set it right again.

Thanks Dennis, I do feel just a wee bit guilty about all those early w/c classes where I 'bypassed' putting the people in.  (http://d326oobcc22bax.cloudfront.net/content/50345/1508247.GIF)

So... I think I'm on the road to recovery.  ;)        :2funny:

I like both your people and the hat Val. People are not my strong point either. I was about to say my problem is finding the time to practice, but that is wrong, I need to make time to practice. I have time I just need to manage it.

Ta much Zilpa. I think that is a problem most of us must deal with. We all have the same amount of time in a day, we just tend not to manage it well and make use of it to the fullest.

Perspective is so much easier if you're stationary!     It is actually quite simple to work one & two point perspective, but does get a bit trickier when working three or more points. Like values and shading, it's another tool to play with and eventually... it sticks!  ;)

So right Gita, it is by doing all these little scribbles that improves hand eye coordination, and improves our seeing and value perception.   O0
