Title: Hat on Chair
Post by: Sacgal/Sharon on July 24, 2017, 05:09:25 PM

Hola! Back from my month in Puerto Vallarta - wishing I were still there! This is a difficult transition returning stateside! This is a painting I started in PV - just finished it in Sacramento. Open to any edit suggestions and a cool title!! Sombrero en Sillo is hat on Chair in Spanish - not sure if that's a good title or not!! Gracias in advance!

Sharon,

I love the simplicity of it.

Not sure about the orange splotch behind the bottom of the chair. It seems to take too much attention away from the gorgeous hat.

Great color scheme.

Thanks Mea - and I see what you're saying. I'll tone down that section and will repost. It's in the reference photo but I agree, it is a bit of a distraction in the painting...

And thanks, Bhavna!!

So looking at the ref photo, I realized I was missing the shade under the chair. I think this makes the orange less distracting now, Mea. The orange is a part of the wall color.

OK, Sharon, that shadow under the chair does now make it look like the wall is that orangy color.  Better.

:thankyou: Neil, Mea and Val! And Mea, I'm grateful you had said something since it allowed me to do the tweaks to make t better. And Val - the simplicity of the ref photo really drew me in. So glad it translated well into a painting.  And I even have a current collector who says she may want to buy it after seeing it framed and in person!

Thank you Patricia, Kathy and Teresa! And I love you thought it was acrylics, Teresa - I tend to go more opaque with my watercolors. And Patricia - that little shadow made a big difference!! Don't they always?!?

Love the detail in the hat...and the crack in the wall and the orange marks and the simplicity and the exotic feel... It looks tropical and Spanishish....

It's a good painting, done well that also has the viewer wondering about the owner of the hat and where he is and what he is doing... :) ...I love it!!!   :smitten:

Lovely painting Sharon, I think the owner of the hat is having a Siesta  :)

:thankyou: Dennis, Linley, Win, Mary Lou and Gita for the lovely compliments! And yes, Dennis - now that you mention it, I do see the triangle! I originally noticed the rule of thirds when I found the ref photo...you've trained my eyes to look for that!

And isn't it fun to imagine what the owner of the hat is doing? A siesta is one thought. I think he's probably doing the salsa on the street with a cute senorita and threw his hat on the chair to get it out of his way!!

Just picked up this painting from the framer - sent a photo to a collector of mine - and she bought it!! The framer did an awesome job - the inner May is the same blue as the band around the hat. The outer mat is linen. And he found an orange hued frame to pull it all together!! The client will hang this in her Tahoe vacation condo. So glad it's found a new home!

I would have bought this too! It has a Cuban flair which I love. I think Lloyd is quite pleased that we have no walls to fill.... and even more.... Guatemala has no mail service here!  :2funny:

:thankyou: Mea and Val! And Val - :2funny: :2funny:!! I think that's the biggest reason I try to sell my art vs keeping it - wall space!!

Sharon not sure if you watch any of the YouTube painting videos.
Just yesterday I was looking at the new uploads and sometimes i watch "Painting with Jane". She was using the same reference "hat on the chair" photo. I was surprised as I thought I recognised the photo from your painting. Jane painted her picture without the hat mainly to demonstrate how to paint the wall.

Your painting is so much better.
