Post by: Abbietaya on August 04, 2017, 07:40:42 PM

First, Scratch out the word FAILURE.  It is not.  Look at it as 1 - parts that are well done and 2- parts I need to do better.

As for working with pastels, I am no help at this point.  I have ordered some pastel pencils and anxiously await their arrival.

Hopefully one of the experienced pastel PB members can help you.

This is not a failure.  I see a shark coming out of the water.  The shark is well done.  Water is challenging to paint and I do not work in pastel, but it is a matter of getting the light and shadowing right.  Dennis has classes on water.  Keep  :painting: !

Good on you for tackling a very difficult subject    One only learns when out of one's comfort zone.
Moving water is notoriously difficult to paint to look realistic. It took me a long time to perfect what I can do now - I still struggle with certain aspects. Study, and observation, is the key to success O0

Keep at it, not matter how many time you don't get it right. The time will come when you will suddenly have a surprise breakthrough :flowers: I've been there, done it, and have the Tee-shirt to prove it :2funny:

    Liz, I am no expert and I think you have done a great job. My suggestion is to try and very gently, blend the solid white lines which are distracting and this will soften and fuse them into the blue/grey of the water and make it more realistic looking.  Hope this helps.

Thank you all for kind comments. Thank you Dennis, i indeed will keep practicing this one, because as you say the breakthrough will be a great feeling.
Its a dramatic scene let down by the water curtain. Its getting the movement of water with the reflection of grey from shark and blue from sky correct , whilst showing the froth  of the water. But if i am anything i am tenacious    thanks again
Take care
 :thankyou: :smitten: :painting:

:heeha: Wow Liz! Cracker job, I agree water is a tough elusive. You've done a good job with a very difficult subject, as Dennis has said,  practice and repetition  will get you there.  O0

As far as this one goes I think if you wish to alter the water it will just take small light touches. I think it looks great as is.

All great advice! Keep going! O0 O0 O0 :painting: I would also consider a lower line for the clouds. And see some pictures of fish jumping from the water to follow the pattern. Probably less water is going up, especially further from the fish. Everything can be improved
