Title: Melinda's parents
Post by: Sacgal/Sharon on February 28, 2018, 07:02:52 PM

My client has asked me to paint portraits of her mom and dad. Here's the ref photo of the dad (who died several years ago from Alzheimers) and my painting of him. Wondering if I should go darker on the skin? Any thoughts on tweaks to make this better?

Hi Sharon I think youíve definitely caught the likeness you could go a little darker in some areas and maybe a little lighter in other areas. I think the main problem is in the photo the chap is obviously leaning forward cuddling the small child but when you take the child away it makes his shoulders look odd
We have a programme here in England called Portrait Artist of the year itís on Sky Arts
Basically every week 9 artists have 4 hours to paint a celebrity
Most artists take a photo and use the grid method to do an initial sketch so I have been having a go this is my latest effort I managed to complete in 4 hours itís not bad but I didnít have the TV cameras, audience and experts looking over my shoulder

I agree the shoulders need a bit of remodeling. The shoulders look a a bit too 'hunched' (?) /rounded. I think the skin tone just needs to be toned down a bit. There is a darker area above and to the side of his left eye. Small rework of the left nostril and you'll have a cracker likeness.

Wow, Neil - your portrait is terrific!

And you and Val are correct about the shoulders. Iíll rework them and the face and will post soon! Thanks so much for the great feedback!

By the way Sharon I didnít mean to usurp your post with my portrait but I know you love portrait painting and I wanted to illustrate the point that if you have a time constraint you sometimes loosen up and paint with more freedom I know itís helped me a lot. Episodes of the programme I mentioned are available on you tube and are worth a viewing

no fears Neil about usurping - I'm also so appreciative of any comments and I know they're all designed to help me get better as a painter! I'll definitely check out the youtube clips. I'll be posting my revisions soon. This is a conservative client so a looser style wouldn't be her cup of tea. Plus they're Mexican so I'm trying to stay true to a darker complexion to reflect the heritage. Stay tuned!

His shoulders look so much better squared off! And Iíve played around with the colors on his skin - but not too much. Again, these are conservative people and would not like the looser style, although I love it and hope to be able to add that to my style sometime. Any thing else I should do?

Knowing now that he is Mexican, I think the skin tone should be a bit more to a brown(ish) tone. At present he looks great, but more Caucasian.

I sent it to the client for her feedback and she said she loves it as is! I guess he was a light skinned Latino.

Hereís some interesting news - a local TV station is coming to my studio Tuesday morning to interview me about my portraits at the Mark Hopkins Museum. Also, they want to discuss how I do portraits. So I can show this one and will show the one of the mom in progress!!

Thanks Patricia! Between you and Val's crystal ball I feel like I've my fairy godmothers watching out for me! What's really significant about this is the fact that 1) I'm a Sacramento artist in a San Francisco museum and 2) there are really very few female artists in museums these days, so this is a huge accomplishment as a woman.  I'm so honored they want to do this!!

This portrait looks much better the shoulders looks great and the toning down looks about right to me itís strange but only this week I realised Iíd done about 30 Portraits and all Caucasian so I did one of Muhammadí Ali and really struggled with the skin tone
Great news on the interview well deserved I knew you would be a star one day

:thankyou: Neil, Mary Lou, Susan, Teresa, Val and Dennis! I've been working on cleaning up my studio - which is on the 3rd floor of our home. My husband is in charge of making sure our dog doesn't bark! It's going to be a crazy day since I'll start it with this TV show and will end it as the on air talent at night for our local PBS station - I'm hosting the tribute show to Mr. Rogers!

Fantastic! Mr. Rogers played an important part of keeping PBS on the air when gov't. wanted to pull funding. Quite the honour.

What an honor to host a show for Mr. Rogers.  He was such a good person and taught such good values - modeled them too.

I have the perfect sweater - wish I were there.

And I thought the dad was hard to do - this mom was a real challenge. Her daughter told me she's had a difficult life and her face shows that...I'm on overload looking at this painting, so hope my PB friends can tell me what more I should do. Really ready to move on from these portraits - they've been tough!

Hi Sharon, you've done well with this, if you soften up the wrinkles and creases in the skin it will help.
Title: Re: Melinda's parents
Post by: TeresaM on March 15, 2018, 11:05:52 PM
Great job.
You do have a talent for portraits.   :flowers:

I think her ear on left side (ie looking at the painting),  needs to be a bit smaller.
Her top lip has a lovely dip in the middle which you should be able to add. Plus more shading on left side around mouth.
Also her chin has a nice dip in the middle and more rounded edges
Hope this helps.
Title: Re: Melinda's parents
Post by: Val on March 15, 2018, 11:18:30 PM
Great job, just a couple of recommendations. The lip colour seems just a bit too prominent, perhaps soften it down a bit. A little extra shaping of the top lip. The section of hair above her left eye looks a bit like cornrows, just blend them out a wee bit. Her right ear lobe is a bit too big, if you check the reference I think you'll see there is less ear lobe and a bit more hair.

The only other thing I would consider changing is the background colour, maybe just lighten it up. That I'll leave with you.

You will have an excellent painting when done.  O0

Thanks for the great suggestions, Bill, Teresa and Val! Iíll incorporate those tomorrow and will repost. Val - the client said this background color is her momís favorite so I canít lighten that. She also asked me to pump up the lipstick color for her mom! I may tone it down a bit after doing the other adjustments - but she apparently does like a bright lipstick!!
Title: Re: Melinda's parents
Post by: Val on March 16, 2018, 12:20:36 AM
If given directions by the client, always best to follow unless it's a terrible idea. Since the lipstick is only a slight deviation from the photo I think she'll be happy with it then. If the client is happy that is what counts.   O0

:thankyou: Val, Patrica, Teresa and Neil! The client called me tonight and she and her siblings love the painting. And she was so complimentary about how I truly captured her mom. She has 2 requests - that I make her fly away hairs a bit more whispy and lighten up some of those dark areas around her mouth and chin - plus soften even more some of the wrinkles. All fairly easy fixes. So Iíll do this tomorrow. She wants not only the 2 originals framed, but also wants 5 giclees of each painting framed to give to Family. So this is turning out to be a very nice commission!

Iíll repost the revised  version of mom tomorrow. Than I can focus on my show on Monday (which we set up today!!)
