Title: MEA's Work on Display
Post by: MaryAnne Long on April 16, 2018, 11:09:11 PM
Last night was the reception at Honolulu Country Club for the Shades of Spring Exhibit. Pictured with me are my friends Linda and Bev who run the bowling alley/Subway shop at Barbers Point. I painted this lighthouse at Barbers Point as a thank you for all the support Bev gave me when I did the PGA/LPGA golf tournament.

Our dear Liz and her husband Wyman stopped by to support me.  So great to see them.  Thanks, both of you.

So proud of my peacock on display at the Association of Hawaii Artists Contemporary Show in downtown Honolulu.  Thirty percent of the entries did not make it into the show - I feel good to have gotten two in. Show remains on display until July 28.  My neck piece was made from old kimono pieces by my textile artist friend Elizabeth Kent.

Thanks, Mary Lou and Kathy.

I encourage all artists, even if they have no art in a particular exhibit, to attend these receptions.  It means so much to the artists to have people there to support them.  (Besides, it's an opportunity to see great art  and usually has good food - plus they are free events.)

We had an artists reception tonight at the show where one of my paintings was the first to sell.  The two in this photo are my new abstract on the left and a semi-abstract on the right.

Great evening with artists, friends, great art, good food, and soft music.  Doesn't get much better than that!

These are my three entries in the Association of Hawaii Artists Mini Show. We hang the show tomorrow.

left - Leahi (Diamond Head) - painted with my own formula chocolate paint.

center - Bird on the Wire - ink and watercolor powder - plus it will have a Quick Response (QR code) so that I-phone users can listen to Leonard Cohen singing his famous "Bird on the Wire"

right - Lavender Spikes - oil  - done with a palette knife.

Last year, we had 185 entries and I won the Second Place award.  No idea what the competition will be this year.  I love all three of my entries, so hope others do.  Sorry that the photo had reflections - bright sunny afternoon.

Winners will be announced at the reception on Nov. 4.  Will let you know how it goes.

Thanks, Patricia and Mary Lou.

None of us expect sales in that venue because it is a private club and the members seldom even look at our work.  I sold one painting from there two years ago and I think that makes me one of the only ones.

We hang there just to socialize really.

Lovely evening at artists reception at Honolulu Country Club.  My Lavender Spikes painting was really too small for this show but I really love it and wanted to share it for others to see.  I have  three other paintings in the show also

Good News, Folks.

Three of my chocolate paintings sold recently, so I am quite pleased.  Plus two other mixed media ones sold in a mini show (at the best gallery in Honolulu!!!).

Since the chocolate is so popular, I took a friends suggestion and tried adding food coloring to my cocoa paint mixture.  Here is my value studies.  Top left - chocolate   Top right - chocolate with yellow food coloring

Bottom left - chocolate with red food coloring   Bottom right - chocolate with green food coloring

Have waxed and varnished them to protect them.

I have a three-panel matted frame, so will take the three best and put them in that frame.  Will post once it is all done.

I will be in an artist reception tonight (Saturday, as most of you read this) at a beautiful botanical garden.  I have two paintings in the show.

Leaf Skeletons mounted on Cradleboard

Flaming Branches of Color palette knife, oil on canvas

It's a juried show, but I doubt I stand a chance as these are not my best works.

Had a great evening at the reception.  Well attended. Live music. Lots of food.  Three of my artist friends won awards.  So proud of them - their work is extremely good.

On the way out of the gallery, I saw a well -dressed couple heading down the long road out ON FOOT.  I stopped and offered a ride to the highway (a mile).  They were an English couple who had come all the way from Waikiki BY BUS to attend the reception.  The wife was an amateur painter and wanted to see our work!  They were both very impressed with the quality of the show and loved the music and food.

Another artist and I will be setting up a Miniature Show today of our mini paintings at our local library.

Here is one that will be in the show.

It is an old sketch (5" x 7") that I did in 2013 and just mounted on a wooden cradleboard which I rubbed with black and gold ink.

Not only will we have the display (10 to 12 pieces each), we will do two mini painting workshops in November for the public at the library and one for a class at the high school.

In addition, I will have pieces in at  least two other mini shows at two downtown galleries.

And, I will be doing a newspaper article in the Honolulu paper about mini shows.

Mini shows are BIG in Hawaii.

Thanks for your concern, everyone.  I finally have glasses and am slowly getting back into painting.

Sorry for being out of sight for a while.  Have had a couple of newspaper articles to concentrate on.

My area of concentration right now is painting for the upcoming mini shows.

I bought quite a few matchboxes and have my first one ready to show.  It 6.5 inches long by 1.5 inches wide.  Its title is "Tick, Tack, Toe" and painted with gouache.  Kind of hokey, huh!  Oh, well, that's my style.

Hi MaryAnne,
So I’ve found you on Paint Basket!   I  :smitten: your new avatar/profile photo.  It’s such a happy likeness of you!  Your eyes are better than mine to do minatures!  I have to read the papers to know what you’re up to lately!  :flowers: ~Liz

BTW are you using new or used matchboxes?  I may have some old ones around.

Sweet Avatar Mea!
By the way, your tick, tack, toe is similar to  the weekly challenge where we paint to keywords. Join us there, too, Mea!

Thanks, Gita, Liz, Annie, Dennis, Nolan, Mary Lou, and Bill.

Yes, my tick, tack, toe was a bit hokey.  The juror ignored it - no award!

I buy packs of matchboxes (1.5 x 2" size).  I go to the sink and burn all the matchsticks, then use the empty boxes.  Have plenty of burned matches if anyone has a use for them.

Thanks, I like the new avatar, too.  My friend did a really good job on the sketch.

I will be at the best gallery in town on Nov. 22 for their annual mini-show.  I have four pieces in the show.  Last year, all four sold.  Hope I am as lucky this year.

aloha
