Title: Mea's New Mixed Up Media
Post by: MaryAnne Long on August 07, 2018, 05:39:39 AM
Today I tried some mini-abstracts with different combinations of media. Having so much fun with this. Not signed because they are still wet. On left is Abstract Sunset, 3" x 3 stretched box canvas." The one on the right is really three different pieces (each one untitled as yet).  They are 2" x 2" little heavy cardboard panels.  It was like making cake frosting.

Please let me know what you think.  If they dry and don't crack, I will tell you what I used.

You are certainly mastering this abstract Mea. The large top one is intriguing. Looks like shaving cream along the top layer.

Thanks, Bill.  I never thought I would "get" abstract," but I am loving it.

These are great Mea! In the top one I can see a raging forest fire, sadly quite representative of the fires blazing in both Canada and the US.
The bottom left has me thinking of looking down into a giant water spout.
Brilliant job on all of them!

Thanks, Val.  They are quite small so I will set them on mini-easels and enter them in a miniature show.

Wonderful Mea, I see so much in these.  Bottom middle is a young girl running home at sunset.  Love how these prick your imagination!!!

Abstract mania.  Painting on top is a sample I did for my senior citizen class. Left side is gesso/ink; right side is acrylic/ink.  Then I sanded it and painted it white. Poured inks, then painted it black.  Then added more inks (yellow, red, teal, white.)  Any thoughts?

(I should have photoed each stage! Actually, the white paint over the sanded texture was pretty cool.)

Had fun.

This is a combination of Gesso, India Ink, and marker.  Its title is "ABSTRACT AWASH."  I love the images that appear when the black ink is worked into the gesso with a toothpick.  It is painted onto a 10-inch square box wooden panel.

Welcome your comments on how to make my abstracts look more exciting.

"Leaf Skeletons" - Watercolor washes and inked lines on watercolor paper mounted on 12" square wood box panel.

Could use some critique on this.  Still not sure about cast shadows and shading on a painting like this - being that it is more abstract than real.

Thanks, Dennis.  Yes, done and varnished.  Ready to mount on wood panel for the next exhibit.

If I had not found paintbasket five years ago, you would not have seen this painting because I might not have pursued art as a hobby!  THANK YOU to you and Nolan, and all PB-ers who encourage each other.

Ni hao, hi there Ms. Leong!   :)

I just came across these fantastic paintings of yours!!!  The blue swirl looks like someone is ‘barreling through the tube’!
What do you think about a red frame or painted on frame for your oriental art?

I can just see you happy as a lark playing with your paints and inks!  I recently saw a guy on Youtube do a huge abstract by pouring paint on a large canvas. Globs here and there of different colors.  Then he covered it with a plastic sheet and used a rolling pin over it, spreading the paint; he lifted the plastic and added more where needed so that after more rolling the whole white of the canvas was covered.  Pretty amazing abstract.  I suppose rolling a dowel would have worked, too.  There must be tons of things to do or use for making abstract art, right?!

Keep enjoying yourself! :painting: ~Liz

Thanks, Liz.  I bought a small roller since most of my work is small.

That mini blue wave will be in the Mini-Show at Cedar Street Gallery on a mini-easel.

Am working on getting gigs around Valentine's Day to do chocolate painting demos.  We'll see how that develops.

Take care, dear friend

Ms. Leong!

Here is a 3" mini acrylic canvas painting as a sample for my kupuna art class tomorrow. It's textured white acrylic with drops of ink spread to represent sky, treeline, stream leading to a pond, and a lavafield, all applied with palette knife. The canvas is magnetic so will make great little Christmas presents for my kupuna to give away. If I do a similar one again, I would make the stream meander off the canvas, instead of making the pond.

The more I look at this, the more I like it. It is Arteza gouache on 140lb. watercolor paper, with drops of Dr. PH Martin inks swirled into the gouache with a plastic fork. I never had any appreciation for abstracts until about 6 months ago, now I am hooked.

This new one where you have used a fork is really interesting but for some reason makes me want waffle fries .......seriously, I do like it.   The river one is very interesting as well.  You are getting me to appreciate the abstract a lot more!  Thanks Mea.

    Mea, both pieces are good but I love the second one as the colours are brilliant and it entices the viewer to "look into" the painting to see what is hidden. I see fish, birds and star fish too.  Lovely.   Patricia

Thanks, Mary Lou.  I understand what you mean about appreciating abstract more.  I never really "got it" until I started hanging out with abstract artists.  Now, I am really hooked on it.

Thanks, Patricia, yes, this last one is my favorite, too.  It is small and I mounted it on a card yesterday to give as a birthday card and then changed my mind.  One of my abstract artist friends wants me to have it made into a giclee and mounted on canvas to preserve it.

Thanks Nolan and Mary Lou for your enthusiasm.

One of my artist friends who works in a huge gallery that sells to the Japanese tourists wants me to put my abstracts in her gallery, but I'm not sure that tourists buy anything but Hawaii scenes.

I'd have better luck with my chocolate paintings of Hawaii scenes I think.

Each year I paint a special Christmas card to make into a postcard.  Here's my most likely to be chosen for this year - my tribute to Van Gogh.

Not sure what to add to it - seems like it's missing something.

Thanks, Nolan for the advice - I decorated it.
