Title: Swift Eagle Feather
Post by: njnjgirl on January 14, 2019, 02:55:16 PM
This man was a very good friend of my parents.  This photo was taken at his 83rd birthday.  He was an Apache-Pawnee and son of a chief.  He was 100 yrs old in 2013 and unfortunately since my parents' death I have lost touch with the family.  His indian name was Swift Eagle Feather.  I came across this photo recently and just had to paint him.  Your comments and suggestions to making this better are appreciated.

Mary Lou, I think this is an excellent portrait. Beautiful job on the feathers and face. If you ever get in contact with his family again I bet they’d love this painting.

Be proud of this one, Mary Lou.  Hope you can find the family.  What a treasure it would be for them.

Thank you Emmalee, Brian, Dennis, Gita, Val and Mea.  Your comments made my day.

Brian I will darken the shadows and post .

Also, I will try to get in touch with his son.  I'd love to send this to him. BTW, I am not the first to paint him.  A famous local artist did his portrait in oils when he was 80.  And when he was a boy he and his father were in a painting that the Sante Fe railroad used for their calendars.  He has so much history.

Wow - Mary Lou - I think this is one of the best things I've ever seen you paint! All of those expressions in the face of this gentleman have been captured so beautifully by you! I do hope you can find his son. He would be so proud of have this painting hanging on their walls...Well done!

Thank you very much Sharon.  So far no luck finding the son.

Here it is revised with darker shadows:

Mary Lou, I really like this.  Very vibrant and not easy to get that three quarter view right but it is great!
