Title: Presidents’ Portraits
Post by: liz on February 15, 2019, 12:01:00 AM
:thankyou: To NOLAN, I learned how to paint portraits in the Portrait Painting Class.

Both portraits of Presidents Donald Trump and George Washington will be on display at the American Legion Department of Hawaii’s Annual National High School Oratorical Speech Contest at the Oahu Veterans Center.  This event coincides with the President’s Day national holiday week and Washington’s Birthday.  We are members of the local American Legion chapter (my husband was a USAF major), and this is our 4th year serving on the pool of judges for this contest.  The first place winner gets $1500 and an all expense paid trip to Washington DC with chaperone.  The students speak on the Constitutional rights and freedoms of American citizens.  The motto for the American Legion is ‘For God and Country’.

I have no doubt you are going to get a wonderful response to your two portraits. Let us know how it goes.

The American Legion Dept. of Hawaii High School Oratorical Scholarship Program, A Constitutional Speech Contest was held 3-2-19 at the Oahu Veteran’s Center in Foster Village.  It opened with prayer, Doxology, and flag pledge.  My husband played his ukulele and led in Doxology, later at the conclusion, he led the singing of America the Beautiful and God Bless America.  He is standing with a post commander and chapter chaplain.

In the next photo, I am with a fellow judge, a lawyer whose husband was recently deployed to Hawaii.  My portraits were on display as were the American and State of Hawaii flag in the other photo. A number of people came up to get a closer look at the paintings and commented on them.  I made a mistake in an earlier post.  Today’s first place winner will go to Indianapolis, IN, the main headquarters of the American Legion to compete in the national contest which began 70 years ago  in 1938.  2019 is the 100th anniversary of the American Legion.  There is a long history of this worthy organization in Wikipedia.  ~Liz

:thankyou: EVERYONE, for your kind remarks.  As you might imagine, there were several comments, though brief ones that I endured.  Some people even in my own family tried their best to say few words or be kind (to me, not the President)! I took Nolan’s advice and didn’t practice portrait techniques on a family member or anyone I know for fear of spoiling their looks.

Well, Pres. Trump is not a Mr. Popularity figure for many in America.  I got from ‘Why did you paint HIM, Mom?!’ to ‘Good likeness of Washington. Trump would buy your painting of him because he looks better in it than the media photos of him.’  The latter was from a retired school principal friend.  I suppose someone else would say, ‘Trump has a face that only a mother could love.’  But that is unkind.  Our post commander said, ‘If he is still President next year, bring back his portrait.’  All I can say is that I learned great lessons on mixing skin colors, painting facial features, including the President’s hair style!!!  Well, thanks to Nolan’s portrait painting course I had put off for 7+ years since he introduced it, I had a little excitement in my life!  :2funny: ::) ~Liz

I like your humour, Liz! Even though, I wondered for what reasons you chose to paint the present president and Washington. 🤔 Who will be the next? 😃. Difficult guess...
