Title: Crater Lake (National Park. Oregon. USA)
Post by: stoney on March 03, 2019, 07:00:56 PM
Finishing this one up after a 3 year hiatus.

Worked on the foreground log and put the trees on the right in.

Instructor had been saying Wizard Island wasn't right; and I thought it was due to the color, but it was due to the positioning and shape.

So I mixed up Ultramarine blue and Titanium White and wiped out then reshaped the island, before adding more color to it.

I was working wet on wet-more paint on top of wet paint.  The blue was brought into the trees for continuity.  I then fleshed out the right side trees.  Three different shades, or tones, of green were utilized.  I also put sun onto the left sides of the trunks and put some dead branches in.

Touched up the 'powdery' aspect of the fallen tree and added the sunlight on the back edge.  This helps put those trees into the background.

Noticed the flatish rock field along the left side looked like it was floating, so added boundry darks to flatten out.

Instructor said there was no contrast with the two trees closest to the stumps sticking up.  I looked at it and didn't understand since I could see the tones in them was different.

Turns out instructor meant between the trees and the left side trees of the painting further into the caldera. Added some darks behind to the left of the two trees.  I saw something was needed to push the left shore line into the distance and added the third tree.

I saw with the addition of the extra tree on the bluff made the grasses on the bluff look unfinished.  So, I put in standing grasses and hints of it on the path behind the foreground log.  The path wouldn't have been highly traveled.

Finished

Looks good Stoney
The water is just a bit too blue for me. Remember that the water reflects the sky colour and your sky is not as blue as the water. In other words there must be a tie in between the sky and water to create harmony / continuity O0

Understood.  I'm adding the source photo that I didn't think of.  Does this change anything?

    Stoney you have done a great job. However, I am no expert but I feel that your sky should be more blue than grey looking which then ties in with Nolan's comments.

Nice photo and painting!

By chance were you using a polarizer filter for the photo, which might explain some part of this.

Like always, Stoney really nice work.

In the photo the water is very blue as well, but notice that the sky is a lighter version of the same Ultramarine colour?
Now look at your painting as you will see that your sky does not have this Ultramarine tint to it.
Just remember to get this tie in for next time O0

Patricia

I'm seeing it, now.

I was thinking I was only utilizing the bottom portion of the atmosphere, so you wouldn't get the darker tone.

Cue needing the 'cold eye' to see the whole thing.  I will be working on it a bit more.  That's going to be tricky as there'[s not a lot of space above the caldera.

Thank you all for the feedback.  You all are right on the mark, as usual.

Nolan pointed out I forgot to put in the 'depth of atmosphere' into the painting.

Last Friday was finally doing well enough to go to art class.  So, I put that in.  How does it look?
