Title: Thor
Post by: EmmaLee on April 25, 2019, 05:06:01 PM
I have spent a little time on this pet portrait and I’m at a point where I know I’m not finished but I’d like to know what you think so far. I went with the shape of the dog and just tried to fill it in with that I could see on the lightened reference (as Denis and Val showed me). I added eyes but didn’t want to put a lot of detail. It’s an 8x10. I’m going to let it dry and then try to sharpen the details on the fur.
What do you think?

Terrible reference:

Should I remove that back leg or keep it in?

See, you CAN do it    Keep the back leg as it breaks the oval shape and also anchors the dog to the floor  O0

Thank you Dennis and Patricia! I’ll repost after I work a little more on the fur. I wanted to make sure I was on the right track. Hopefully it dries enough in the next few days for me to continue.

EmmaLee

You are doing a really good job on this, as you do with all the other dog paintings you've done.

I really like the eyes. Not sure what else is needed, but maybe that is what you got the commission!

Really nice work!

Looks good to me :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

I would also keep the back leg, it is in the corner so nobody even looks there O0

Thank you MaryLou, Mea, Charles, Nolan, Val and Elizabeth. I worked on this a bit more today but I don’t think I made it much better. It looks a little better in person but on the screen I see very little difference. May have been a waste of time. Should I call it finished? Let me know if you see something I should tweak.

EmmaLee

Considering what you had to work with, I'd say you exceeded your own expectations.

DONE!  I admire you for taking on this challenge.  I would have walked away from it.

Thank you Nolan and John!

I sent the image to the client and she loved it! She said she had tears in her eyes seeing it. I was so relieved because I wasn’t very confident about this one. After showing her daughters she contacted me again and asked if I could add a few more white hairs around the eyes (eyebrow area). She said he was very old and his eyes were usually hard to see through his hair.
I guess I’ll work on that a bit today and see what I can do. I hope you aren’t tired of seeing Thor, because I’ll probably repost before I send it to her.

EmmaLee, rest assured that we NEVER get tired of seeing your work and the transformation of a somewhat very difficult reference photo into such a beautiful masterpiece which you did.  I don't know what a few more white hairs will achieve but looking forward to seeing what you do with it. I knew that your client would be over the moon with what you had already achieved for you are an outstanding animal artist.

Ahh, thank you so much Patricia!

Actually she wants more hair around the eyes with a few white hairs mixed in. She mentioned that he had “old man eyebrows.” So I need to make his eyes look less visible and age him a bit.

Post away EmmaLee, on some of my earlier works I think I may have posted progress reports 8 or 9 times! Never worry about  ´over-posting´. You´ll be the first to know when we´re tired of it....   :attacked:         :2funny:
I´m looking forward to seeing what little tweaks you end up with. Take your time, you´ll get it done.  :cheering: :cheering: :cheering:

Thank you MaryLou and Val!

Ok here is old man Thor.  Haha
I definitely aged him. I hope the client likes this better. She might want more of his eyes covered.   I’m ready to move on to a different project.

No, not yet. I created a Facebook page for my art a few months ago. I want to get a website started but I don’t know much about it.

Even if you just set up a basic website as a showcase for your pet portraits. You can than add price lists, contact forms, etc on it.It gives you a place to send people to when they want to know more about your painting services.
I would also suggest getting Instagram, if you are not already on it.

Thank you Nolan. I really want to get a website started. I have heard it isn’t too hard to figure out with some of the user friendly sites available. I’ll definitely get on that soon.
I did make an instagram page the other day.  :)
