PATTERN CHALLENGE
This is the first of the art challenges.
Follow the tutorial HERE (https://paintbasket.com/using-patterns-in-art/)to learn all about using patterns in your artworks.
Your challenge is to create an artwork that has a pattern in it using one of the methods from this tutorial.
The pattern can be regular, irregular or even a combination of both.
Then you must break that pattern in an interesting way.
Then return here to post your challenge entry.
All challenges are subject to the CHALLENGE RULES (https://paintbasket.com/members/index.php?topic=15404.0).
Good luck and have fun

Hi everyone, miss you all...
Overdue to pick up the brush again. Just need to find where I left my right brain, but I can give it a start with the left one for this challenge... :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:
-
Nolan, what a creative challenge you’ve organised! It will be thrilling to see the submissions! What a vast field to work upon!
-
Hi Nolan,
This will be another exciting challenge.
Question: Do we have to make up our own pattern for our final painting or can we paint things we find in naturally occurring nature?
-
you decide Teresa, you have free reign. Let your imagination guide you. As long as you break the pattern in an interesting way O0
-
Here is my entry.
Oil on wood canvas/board.
The flowers in themselves form patterns and the pattern in the middle as well as patterns on the bug.
But the bug also break up the flower pattern.
-
Beautiful!
-
Beautiful Maryna. I love the lady bug, you painted it so well!
-
great entry, well done :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

Here is my entry. Ducks in a pond...irregular patterns in water, ducks breaking pattern. Ducks are pattern, mother duck breaking pattern. Patterns in pond vegetation. Patterns found on duck feathers. Done with watercolor and ink on arches paper.

Well done Maryna, MaryLou and Robynann.

Thanks for all the compliments.
-
Thanks so much Teresa, Gita, Mary Lou and EmmaLee... It was a lot of fun to create
-
This is my submission for the challenge with patterns. I am also explaining my thoughts to this abstract pattern painting.
The varying hearts regularly placed but with irregular colours represent our varying emotions. Two of these hearts have stronger background colours to break the pattern.
All placed regularly in regular sized boxes, represent the effort we make to control these emotions.
The lines of the boxes are broken since it’s difficult at times to keep these emotions in place.
This is mixed media 115cm x 84 cm painted mainly with acrylics. And.. I am going to hang it in my living room.
Some of the colours come out better in the following photo
-
Nicely done Gita.
-
Thanks Mary- Lou. In real this piece looks more interesting since the hearts have contents in them which you don’t see in the photo.
-
Gita this is a beautiful painting and I love you explanation of the painting. :flowers:
However, it might just be me, but I don't see a focal point that breaks your pattern.
-
two more great submissions, well done :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
-
Thank you Teresa for your comment. O0, :)
Thank you Nolan! :D
I am aware of what Nolan said in his tutorial. Breaking a pattern increases interest and draws your attention towards the object which breaks the pattern.
But with that being said, my painting (canvas) as a whole is the focal point. The repeating hearts and boxes are patterns which create harmony as a whole and are objects of main interest and the small dark patterns breaking the white lines of the boxes create subtle points of further interest.
Like I mentioned earlier, the hearts have contents and colours in them, and the eye wanders from heart to heart. I decided not to emphasise any heart by colour or size.
Initial opinions of people to my painting are positive and has created interest. At first they stare at it ( maybe thinking “just a set of stereotyped hearts”) and then they take a double look at the details. One even discovered the colours of the German flag 🇩🇪 in the top right heart, which is purely accidental 😮. Since I live in Berlin it’s an interesting accident. The hearts have photo pieces underneath done with photo transfer potch paste from Kreul.
As far as I know, there is much debate about the necessity of focal point in Art. Paintings do not necessarily need to have a focal point, I believe. Some of Monet’s paintings (Irises in Monets garden/ Rouen Cathedral, The Portal, Morning Fog/ the poplar trees) have no particular focal point. The whole painting draws attention. I am not sure if I was subconsciously influenced by Warhol’s Marylin while creating this.😅.
Hope my explanation makes sense.
-
what I like with this challenge is that it has made everybody think about what they are painting and doing some analysis of it :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
-
Oh yes, Nolan, I most certainly did analyse. :flowers: you have created a highly interesting challenge! I am looking forward to further entries and explanations.
-
Wonderful tutorial! Thank you!
-
:bigwelcome: to the Paint Basket Taormina
-
Sorry, first time. Thank you for the help. I hope it works now.
-
-
:thankyou: Gita for your analyses
-
Taormina this a very pretty painting. Well done.
-
Gugi this a very good example of patterns.
-
This was painted with acrylic paints on a previously used Saunders Watercolour 300 gsm paper (Just used the other side).
My regular/irregular pattern are the various red apples.
This is then broken twice.
Firstly with the addition of 2 golden apples. Secondly with the half eaten red apple which is also my focal point of the painting.
-
Beautiful!!! Congratulations!
-
Lovely submission Taormina!
Very interesting and unique pattern Gugi!
Teresa, your painting is an eye catcher and very well painted!
It’s so interesting to see such different submissions!
-

:bigwelcome: to the Paint Basket Gugi - I am glad you managed to get your artwork posted
-
Sorry, first time. Thank you for the help. I hope it works now.
No worries Taormina, we´ve all been there! :bigwelcome:
Never worry about asking questions if you need a hand, that´s what we´re all here for. :yippee:
Love the trees and reflections in your painting. What medium(s) did you use?
-
:bigwelcome: Welcome aboard Gugi! Excellent display of pattern usage.
-
This is the first time I have made anything of mine public. I am a beginner so the encouragement that you and Nolan have given me is very precious. Thank you.
-
Oh Wow, these pattern art are so wonderful by all & incrediably inspiring - maybe I will try this challenge - Thank you ladies :)
-
Oh wow, well done everyone. Amazing how we all see the patterns different and what we create from it.
-
Hi Val,
Thank you for the encouragement.I’ve used soft pastels. I was painting it when I read the tutorial and realized that there were broken patterns in it. And some that I could break to make it more interesting! So, I finished it and made it my first submission. Funny how we do things without thinking. Without the tutorial I wouldn’t have thought of the importance of patterns. Lesson learned. Thank you!!!!
-
Welcome Taormina and Gugi :welcome: ...You will be happy here.
Nice pattern paintings Taormina, Gugi and Teresa. These are all so interesting.
-
:thankyou: Gita, Val,Taormina,Maryna,Trace.

I'm looking forward to more entries.
-
Go ahead Tracey :heeha: :gl:
Gugi, I am glad you shared. Now you know to not be shy to share your work O0
-
Here is my Pattern Challenge;
The Pylons are the repeating - (bit irregular) pattern & the goat (once a well loved pet), breaks the pattern by giving a focus.
I used various types of pencils, Pastels & fine liner.
It is taken from a photo of Zeebs @ our local beach & she was posing with her "beach babe" expression
I didn't realise until I set to this challenge, how much patterns form really interesting pictures...now that's all I'm seeing these last few days.. Lol.
I really loved doing this - Thanks Nolan, it was fun :)
-
Well done Trace.   She looks happy.
-

 Back to painting at last, after a long long break. Too long as I could not upload my entry for the challenge in time. I gave up after 45 minutes and left it in my album.
:gl: everyone - there are some interesting entries.
Edit by Nolan : Here is your entry Cath:
-
The Migration of the Albino Canada Goose (acrylic on canvas, 16x20")
The pattern is obvious, a group of Canada Geese flying in the traditional yet imperfect V-shape flight pattern; broken by the presence of a rare albino goose.
This was a real challenge at all level and I enjoyed every part of it. I borrowed about a dozen of books from the public library and spend most of the month reading about Canada Goose, doing many sketches of the birds. Then choosing my favorites and putting then into various rough compositions. I finally went for a simplified style for my painting. I started painting at the last minute (i.e. 2 days ago) and grossly misjudged how long it would take me. My worst mistake was to finish tonight after dark... the photo is not great under artificial light.
All in all, I learn a lot about our National Bird and I am most happy that I have hold a brush again after two years.
-
NOTE: THIS IS CATH'S PAINTING...not mine! Annie
 Back to painting at last, after a long long break. Too long as I could not upload my entry for the challenge in time. I gave up after 45 minutes and left it in my album.
:gl: everyone - there are some interesting entries.
Cath,
I am happy you are also painting again, but sad you could not upload your painting.
Is this the painting you wanted to submit? If yes, I hope this will be accepted as your submission for the challenge... if not, please let Nolan know and I will probably have my ears rub...
-
Annie, :thankyou:, Yes, that is the one :smitten:. And I am happy you have picked up your paintbrush again, too.
Nolen, to be fair towards others, if the entry was too late, or did not meet the challenge, it won‘t upset me to have it removed.
Love this new concept for the challenges.
The shell immediately popped into my mind  after reading what the challenge was about. Yesterday afternoon while painting, I thought the opening out of the shell would be enough to break the pattern of the lamella/ribs, but last night, it dawned on me that that wasn‘t enough, so quickly :painting: added the sea-slug.
Painted with water-colours and iridescence for inside the shell.
-
Beautiful concept and painting Anne!!!
-
Nice painting Cath!
-
Nice entries Ann and Cath.
-
Hi Cath,
You are welcome. It would have been a shame not to have your beautiful shell entered. I like the addition of the sea-slug, really creates a nice focal point.
The submission was stamped as Aug 31, 21h 21min... so you made it.
Good luck to you, and to everyone! :gl:
All the entries are very different and very creative. Personally, I really liked having criteria to follow without being given an image to copy.
-

Thank you Mary Lou, Nolan and Cathy for your comments.

You all have done such a great job on this challenge, well done!!!I had to give it a try, not only for practice but also to catch-up and just for fun, ^_^.
Karisma's, glitter gelpens and black Micron 03.
It is just a small sketch, 11cm x 16,5cm on 120gr/cm drawing paper. Not my favourite, too soft and too off-white, but it will do for fun little sketches.
-
  lovely... I also did Catch up Riya 😊
-
:thankyou: Win. I love these fun challenges and I need something to come back into drawing and practice on a regular, daily, basis. Missed drawing a lot, it is my favourit, aldo I absolutely loved painting the Dragonfly.

Very nice Riya!

-
I really like this one. Especially the fact that you have left the candles monochrome. :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
-
:thankyou: so much Nolan, I loved making this little sketch. :)
-
Hi! I saw these art challenges in the newsletter, and I have really been missing drawing, so I decided to give it a go. My work in no way compares to what everyone else is doing, but I learned a lot and had fun with this challenge.
This is done with ball point pen on sketch paper, breaking my first pattern of sketching with pencil.
I used a pattern of wonky bricks for the fairy house and well, broken by the chimney and straight sides on the house, and straight lines for the wood on the well.
Continuing the fantasy theme, I added a large mushroom with peppermint dots, broken by the small dragon perched on it and the one peppermint with dragon scales. The purple dragon has a scale pattern broken by his red horns and pointy red triangle tip of a tail.
I added a pattern of a red triangle on each object, which was broken by having two triangles incorporated into the spaceship.
I broke the fantasy objects theme by adding in a spaceship.
Mysti

I did a little catch up myself, after being away from drawing and painting for more then two years due to illness. And I too started with these challenges to get back.
