Title: 2 Monochrome Artwork Challenge
Post by: nolan on August 27, 2019, 02:00:37 AM
MONOCHROME ARTWORK CHALLENGE

This is the second of the art challenges.
If you would like to follow the challenges in order (you don't have to), then click HERE  (https://paintbasket.com/using-patterns-in-art/)to go to the first challenge.

Follow this challenge tutorial HERE  (https://paintbasket.com/creating-monochrome-artworks/)to learn all about creating monochrome artworks.

Your challenge is to pick 5 objects, four that match and one that doesn't.

For example you could pick 4 objects from the kitchen and one from the workshop.

Set these five objects up to form a simple still life. Then paint or draw all of the matching objects as well as the background in monochrome - you can choose any one colour you like.

Then using a different colour complete the odd object.

Then return here to post your challenge entry.

All challenges are subject to the CHALLENGE RULES (https://paintbasket.com/members/index.php?topic=15404.0).

Good luck and have fun

Another good challenge, Nolan.
Monochrome painting is something I personally enjoy doing for various reasons.

This looks to be another really interesting & fun tutorial to try, thanks Nolan. I'm trying to get my head around the whole concept of how i go about this, & hopefully by doing this challenge, it will help me to learn so much.

I'm just a little confused by; ..." Then paint or draw all but the matching objects as well as the background in monochrome - you can choose any one colour you like". (Sorry if this is glaringly simple, as stated, but I just had in my head that i would doing the whole picture in monochrome & 1 object that doesn't match in color)

But, I keep reading...." Then using a different colour complete the odd object".  Does this mean that the 4 matching objects are the ones we colour in 1 colour? Or is it the 1 unmatching object we colour?

This is all new to me, so sorry if my confusion is clouding my understanding. Cheers Tracey

HI Nolan, another great tutorial and challenge idea.

I am working on this but have a question.  In watercolor, can I add another color to the main color to make shadows? Such as green added to red to darken it...Also if I am working with alizarin can I also use rose red with it, a it is still red or does it need to be all the same shade of red?

Thanks!

I am doing a sepia painting and to get the shade I want I mix various colours,  raw sienna, burnt umber, yellow ochre, cad yellow, a touch of cad orange and a touch of Ulta blue which make up what I like. I will vary the strength for the darker values.

Tracey:

oops I used the wrong word. Here is the correct wording which should make more sense:
Quote
Set these five objects up to form a simple still life. Then paint or draw all of the matching objects as well as the background in monochrome - you can choose any one colour you like.

Then using a different colour complete the odd object.
Sorry for the confusion  :crazy2:

Mary Lou:

You can use the normal colour mixing rules to adjust your colours, eg green into red to get the shadow colour O0

Quote
I am working with alizarin can I also use rose red with it
yes you can, they are still reds as long as you second colour is different, eg., blue
Bill : sounds good O0

Thank you Nolan.  I keep reading the directions and watch the video twice... I was still not sure.

Bill, if I get it right... you would need to paint the man in his canoe a different color then your other 4 boats (hum, I think I see 5) and your background... not the red dots.   But wait for others input, or Nolan, before you adjust your painting.

BTW, this is a great composition.  I love it.

Annie is correct.

In this painting he sailboats would be the matching items, so they and the background get painted in monochrome.
The rowing boat is the odd item so it would be painted another colour in order to make it the focal point. Something like this:

Here is the example from the tutorial:

The items from the kitchen as well as the background have been painted in one colour.
The odd item (the axe) is then painted in another colour to make it stand out as the focal point

Well, this was an interesting challenge.  Mine is painted in my original-recipe chocolate paint.

The only way I can make values is more or less layers of chocolate.

The theme is Footwear and One Not.

Painting is chocolate pigment with one tiny drop of yellow food color.

Oh Mea I'm so glad you submitted your painting,  i love seeing what everyone does and how they go about it, & i'm really intrigued by your use of chocolate...Is that REAL chocolate or do you make your own paint? It really makes your painting look rich.

Great painting Bill - I love the camel

Here's my drawing. 4 x Humans & 1 Cray boat. I found this challenge like jumping into the deep sea. With the 1st challenge I wanted to challenge myself to create from a personal experience with just focusing on perspective.
With this one I tried - perspective again with additions & also following the light source.
Thanks Nolan... it was a tough challenge for me, but I'm glad I persisted

Glad you were able to correct your entry Mea.   :)  You handbag looks like gold lame now.

Bill and Trace, your paintings are nicely done however, sorry to say, I do believe we are supposed to do a still life with 4 items matching (done in one color including the background)  and the 5th item something different and in a different color, as in Nolan's example with the axe.

"The items from the kitchen as well as the background have been painted in one colour. The odd item (the axe) is then painted in another colour to make it stand out as the focal point"

Here is the example from the tutorial:

Thanks, Trace.  Yes, I make my own paint from organic cacao powder/gum arabic/water.

Thanks, Mary Lou.  Oooh, gold lame, la-di-dah.  Now I need a fancy place to go to.

Since there seems to be general confusion on the rules for this challenge, I hope Trace and Bill can resubmit, too.

Nolan, sorry I still have some questions.
1. Does it have to be only 4 objects and 1 odd object? Or any other number?
2. Can the odd object have various colours in it?
3. Can I use mixed media for the odd subject AND for the monochrome, for eg. pen and ink and shades of black?
4. Does the example below follow the rules? Poppies in monochrome and the squirrel as odd subject in a different colour. This is NOT my submission. I can remove it after your answer.
Thank you. I do not want to misunderstand the challenge rules
🤓

I don't think we should be too strict on it being a still life. Tracey and Bill have created paintings which have four matching items plus an odd one and we can see they were created to follow the brief. I am happy with them as entrants.

Gita, in your example however the four items are not clearly defined so you can't tell the four items from the background.
You can use any medium for your challenge entries, these is no medium requirement.

The odd item can have spots of other colours in it, but should be overall, one contrasting colour.

Ohoh!  Now I am confused about the 5th object...

Is it a monochrome using a different color OR a colour glaze over the monochrone used for the other 4 objects and the background?
Title: Re: 2 Monochrome Artwork Challenge
Post by: Gita on September 13, 2019, 05:34:35 AM
Oh yes Annie, that’s also something I would like to know. But I assume that the odd subject is in various shades of ANY contrasting colour. A colour glaze over a monochrome 5 th object will have the same result, I suppose.
Nolan says the 5 th object could have spots of further colours in it.
Am I right, Nolan?
Wow, this is going to be a thrilling challenge! I am so curious to see the entry paintings.. :yippee: :yippee:

Marylou, very nice composition and choice of colours

Gita,  thanks so either techniques (contrasting so doesn't have to be complementary) and even plash of colour as in the camel.  Ok that is a fair range of flexibility.

Win, join in.  It is a lot of fun.  I don't think you need to create traditional still life.  Pyramids and camel are more a scenery and the painting looks great.  Get something out of your suitcases and draw them  ;)

Substance Abuse and Death

There is a substance abuse crisis in North America, and many lives are lost wastefully.  A sensitive topic, and I do hope that I will not offend anyone.

The 4 items in the series represent substance abuse, they are:  alcohol, injectable drugs, cannabis, and opioids.
- Pure black to white scale because this is a dark topic, often relegated to back alleys.

The contrasting object is a skull, representing death of course.   I wanted chocking contrasting colors, 1) because I was trying to push myself outside of my subdue nature-like choice of colors, and 2) because again, unlike my nature, I  wanted to create a chocking painting to make people talk or at least think about this topic.

The wash (I did it Nolan!) is:
purple - chosen as an alternate color of mourning the death of a love one (or an abandon soul)
blue - to represent the deep depression suffered by many individuals with substance abuse
red - to depict the pain associated with this class of disorders

As for the first challenge, I spent a lot of time researching and studying both the topic and doing many sketches before starting the paint.  Unlike the first challenge, I did not wait until the last week to start painting.
I created a still life* and used the grid method to transfer it to my canvas.

Taking a representative photo was my last challenge, finally managed with indirect light to get ride of most reflection... okay black is not easy to photograph.

Here is my submission, acrylic on canvas 16x20":

* before you ask, my still life did not include any drugs.  They were all make believe, juice for the alcohol, sugar for the injectable drugs, roll of paper burned at one end for the cannabis, and acetaminophen/paracetamol for the opioids.

The „sensuous“ painting could be hung in the dining room of a vacation resort by the sea side in Provence, I suppose.
Nolan, this challenge has awakened my interest with painting different values with this „Tusche“ ( meaning „ink“ in German). This is a lovely permanent ink which I use in urban sketching, too. Thank you for your idea with this challenge!
P.S: I corrected some grammar mistakes in my explanation ( the submission time has changed).

You make me think... this is what art is also about.  Even if beautiful, unless it doesn't mean anything to the observer it won't be attractive to him/her.  A friend said:  Art must "talk" to me for me to like it.

Hope you will find time to do your still life.  I relate, I am extremely slow.

Tracey, thank you so much! I appreciate your comment! In fact I got very immersed during the painting process while shading with the brown ink and enjoyed the flow. Nolan has started a challenge where one can study values playfully but also with some ambitious energy. Worth mentioning is that the flow changed while switching to the colours of water color... ☺️☺️

Hi Gita,
Great question!  The reason is a bit technical.  The jaw is also part of the cranium, but it is related to the digestive part, my topic is around neurology (really neuro-psychiatry).  Makes sense to me to exclude the mandibule, but maybe not from the artistic point of view.

Do you think my painting would have been better with the mandibule?

Definition:
The skull is composed of two parts: the cranium and the mandible. In humans, these two parts are the neurocranium and the viscerocranium or facial skeleton that includes the mandible as its largest bone.

Annie, I think the skull would have looked more complete. But this way it sits stable on the table. I thought you made the photo yourself including the skull. Having said that, I wondered what reason you had to  place it without the mandibula.

See your painting is creating a lot of attention. 😀

Hi Gita,
Yes, I did create the still life myself and played with various objects (incl. the jaw bone) and composition/light for a few days.  Until I liked it... and under pressure 'how long is this setup going to stay in the kitchen?'

Thank you for your comment, much appreciate your input and your time.

I really should have chosen more recognizable objects for this one as the first comment I got was, What is that?”  I keep these in my kitchen window sill.  It is four rocks done in monochrome: quartz, soapstone, river, and geode.  The rocks and the background were all drawn with the same pencil similar to sketching.  In the middle is a broken 1/2 piece of a megalodon shark’s tooth I found.
