Creating Texture Challenge
This is the fourth of the art challenges.
If you would like to follow the challenges in order (you don't have to), then click HERE (https://paintbasket.com/using-patterns-in-art/)to go to the first challenge.
Follow this challenge tutorial HERE (https://paintbasket.com/texture-painting-techniques/)to learn all about how to add texture to your artworks.
Your challenge is to use an actual as well as a simulated texture in one painting. Your painting can be any subject under the sun as long as it has both these texture types in it.
Then return here to post your challenge entry.
All challenges are subject to the CHALLENGE RULES (https://paintbasket.com/members/index.php?topic=15404.0).
Good luck and have fun

Exciting challenge Nolan 😊
-
Interesting tutorial Nolan! All previous ones have been great too..but this one is different ..,,would be challenging to implement....I mean for me!😊
-
Again, You have created a mind blowing challenge where we can get creative. Thank you for your well explained tutorial! So many ways to get texture!
Have to go to my local Bauhaus to search for a good structure paste. :D. Eventhough, I like the transparent gel, too..
Ach Nolan, you really can keep us busy. 🤨😉😅
I missed the tutorial with „the big five“. Will watch it.
-
My Texture entry representing Blending, (Sky) Contouring (the beach) Splatter and using Watercolour Ground in lieu of impasto for the trees and logs. This is from a photo I took near Renmark, South Australia
-
Wow, fantastic, Bill!
-
I love the painting Bill!
-
Fantastic Bill. Very creative
-
Beautiful Bill.
-
great job Bill :gl:
-
This is really beautiful Bill, the textures of the trees really enhance the picture
-
:thankyou:Gita, Zayn, Win, Nolan and Tracey. You are really opening up our minds Nolan.
-
You are really opening up our minds Nolan.
I want everybody to grow and continually improve O0
-
Beautiful painting Bill!
And I just learn about something new 'watercolor ground'... maybe Dennis refers to it in later lessons.
-
Thank you Nolan for the hand-on tutorial in the introduction. I just completed it, very good practice... and I got my idea for the painting now.
-
:gl: with your painting Annie
-
O my Gosh, this was a fun way to spend the day, Thanks Nolan & Dennis.
Considering I started out just experimenting on a bit of cardboard, on the outset I really wasn't holding much hope that a picture would form.
(I'm so glad you didn't limit this to just 2 tools Nolan, cos I just couldn't contain myself & just carried on with try one & nearly all. :2funny:
So the Simulated covered nearly all ( This is the most I ever painted, so I just wanted to get a feel for the way the paint spread, Brushes & mixing up colours, which is a new experience) & for the Actual I used the Builders Filler, Tape, sandpaper, Impasto & Metallic Paint.
-
WOW, Trace, that is a gorgeous painting you have made. I just love :smitten: the texture of the tree, and background it looks awesome   . You have really done a great job on this challenge :twothumbs: :twothumbs:
-
Bravo Trace, tons of texture in this painting! You have done a wonderful job!
-
That is the way, Tracey - it is fun when you get totally absorbed in what you are doing and end up happy with the unexpected results.
-
Great texture in your painting Trace, well done. :gl:
-
Thank you Nolan, excellent tutorial again. Since I do not paint with oil or acrylic, I did a watercolor and used bits of cotton which is adhered to my paper by masking fluid. My real texture is the cotton on the dandelions and bits in the air and the other texture in the painting was done using kitchen paper over wet watercolor.
-
Gorgeous painting Mary-Lou. I really like it :smitten: , the flowers look just awesome. O0 Great idea and great painting, well done    !!
-
You made really good use of textures Trace!Lovely painting beautiful colours! Well done!
-
I can well imagine MaryLou... it must be difficult to use 3D textures with water colours. But you did great using cotton wool and paper. It looks Very effective.lovely painting...soothing colours!
-
Well done    Tracey It is a fun thing
-
Good one Win. I like your cotton idea, also with a movement of wind blowing the seeds
-
Thanks Bill but you should be directing your praise to Mary Lou not me, she was the artist I cant take credit for it ;)
-
Very pretty :painting: , Mary Lou.
-
Apologies Mary Lou, so many good artists here I was "muxed ip"
-
:thankyou: Everyone for your wonderful comments. I am blown away as I really went to town on the texture experiment ;) & not knowing what on earth the outcome would look like,, it's very busy! I loved doing this tactile challenge.
I would love to know how you all manage to keep such a steady hand when you paint? Mine just shook alot.
I love your Dandelion painting MaryLou, It's is so beautiful, whispy very clever. I'm going to try doing some more texture pictures, now that I can see things that I would/n't use again & I'd love one day that I might be able to learn to paint by using softer colours and finer strokes :). You all do such beautiful work
-
:urwelcome: , your painting does look awesome!!!.
My hand isn't steady as well, and I also suffer from doublevision, but before I start at my painting, I do a underpainting, or paint a sketch just for getting my hands 'ready' for painting, and ofcourse myself. When doing some 'test'painting I am more relaxed when sarting at the 'real'painting. And when I am done ...there is a lot of tweeking with a smaller brush, :2funny:
-
great entries, well done
-
Apologies Mary Lou, so many good artists here I was "muxed ip"
;D ;)
-
Love your dandelion painting Mary Lou, very creative.
-
Trace, your tree is wonderful with so many textures!
MaryLou, extremely creative with your idea! The dandelion looks so soft and fluffy!
-
All your submissions are wonderful, well done
-
Here is mine under natural light by the window:
I don't seem to learn that it is difficult to take a photo of a painting with a large dark area and a large pale area... I kept doing this and the details get lost in the photo. The details and colors in the clouds are washed out, and the details of the foreground are gone. Any tips would be most welcome?
-
Love it Annie, The Mount looks 3 Dimensional :)
-
Good one in Natural light Annie. In this case it has worked out right for you with the light from one side casting the shadows.
I never take photo's of pictures with flash nor in the bright sunlight, Always in a bright even light situation.
-
Annie an interesting painting with lovely actual texture, Im just not seeing the simulated texture though.
-
Love it Annie! Great entry!
I like the first one too.I usually keep my painting on the floor and take early morning or late evening..so no harsh light. But never done texture painting ... so not sure if it will catch all the textures well!
Good luck!
-
Great painting  , and I love :smitten: the texture Annie!!! Taking good pictures is sometimes a bigger challenge then the challenge on itself. :2funny:
-
Fabulous texture Annie. The first one looks terrific as the light has made shadows and really shows up the textures. :yippee:
I am horrible at taking photos :crazy2:but I do know that you can not use a flash. That much I have learned. :)
-
Win,
The simulated texture is 'Shading' of the sky from light blue to ultramarine, number 4 in the Texture Tutorial. I guess the actual textures overshadows the shading
:thankyou: Bill, Jay, Riya, Mary Lou, for the comments on taking photo. I will remove the one with the flash. Also thanks for the words of support.
-
great job Annie, lots of actual texture in this one :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
In this photo your light is too strong and direct. When photographing you need indirect light which evenly illuminated the canvas. Usually from the front, but in this case you want to show texture so you ensure the light is from the side O0

-
Lot of textures, Annie!! Very nice!
-
Great entries everyone. Well done.
-
Fabulous entries!!!
-
Nolan, I did various setting of the light, I agree this is not the usual way to take a photo of a painting; but I like the effect of the stronger light on the side. Painting actual texture is a Challenge in itself... pushing, pushing limits and trying new things :heeha:
Thank you Gita.
-
My Texture submission.
All I have in my suitcase are pencils and a found piece of hessian, no access to paints and moulding paste etc 😊
This is done in Graphite, hessian and coloured pencil. The background is cross hatching, and the blouse is scrumbling
-
awesome job on limited supplies, well done Win :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
-
Thankyou Nolan. :)
-
:smitten: I agree with Nolan, Win, well done. :yippee:
-
So very creative, Win. Well done!!!
-

:thankyou: Cath, Gita and Bill.
-
Beautiful Win...very creative!
-
Amazing what you did with so little. I like the softness of her face with the contrast of the texture of her hair. Well done
-
Thank you Zayne and Annie :thankyou:
-
Good job. You did her hair so well!
-
Thanks Mary Lou
-
Win I love your textured Lady, so clever with the hessian and her face is beautiful.   Did you stitch her hairto her head?
-
Thank you Trace. The "hair" is glued into place. :)
-
Here is my challenge. I just had great fun putting on his feathers.Unfortunatelly there was going something very wrong with the heavy gelmedium that I used and it ruined my painting :( ...so I had to cut of the tail and his feet :2funny: ...Poor rooster. But he still looks good :smitten: .
Sorry photo isn't really sharp.
This time I used a better moddeling paste for some texture. The painting is done in acrylics, and some metalic paints for the green feathers, and some tears :'( . I did fall from the stairs...5 steps. So I am now very colorful, mostly black and blue  :2funny:
-
I love your cute portrait Win. It really looks awesome!!! :smitten:
-
:2funny: maybe he ran from a cockerel fight, Riya, because he is a handsome fellow.
Oh dear, sorry to hear you tried to compete with his colouring - very painful experience, I am sure.
-
Nice one Riya, good colouring
-
Colours so bright..lovely painting Riya!
So sorry to hear about your fall!Hope you feel better soon!
-
Your painting is nice Riya, if you did not mentioned the feet I would have thought it was as you wanted to crop your painting.
Please be careful, don't fall again and heal quickly :flowers:
-
Oh Dear Riya Im sorry to hear you had a fall
Your Cockerel is awesome
-
Riya, beautiful colours and really very nice Cockerel!
Sorry to hear about your fall. Take care. :flowers:
-
:thankyou: Cathy, Jay, Annie, Win and Gita. Hubby told me to wear my shoes instead of slippers :nono: at home. I do have to wear them, orthopedic shoes, but not always want them on the whole day  ...Well...now I do :promise: , I am to scared to fall again. I still can't sit without pain :injured: , or sleep on my back or right side  . And my left shoulder and hand still hurt a lot from grabbing the railing really hard so I wouldnt fall down 13 steps.
Lucky that my reaction was that fast, it only hurts a lot :2funny: . But it could have ended wors. Now I only have a 'few' black, blue, purple, green and yellow bruises, :heeha: hm...I do look like my painting :2funny:
-
Can’t beat my record ::) ...as usual last one to hand in!
-
Riya, sorry about your fall. Feel better soon.
Your rooster looks wonderful, lovely feathers.
