Title: Wins Portrait Dillema
Post by: Win on February 02, 2020, 09:38:38 PM
I have been asked to do a portrait of someones Grand daughter. But I am struggling with it, cant quite get it right. Im still busy with the hair, and the eyebrows need to be completed.
I would appreciate any input from you Nolan and PB members.  :idiot2: :painting:

A pretty good likeness Win. Maybe more shadow around the eyes and cheeks.. Also the lips a little wider. On the photo see how the edges line up with the eyes...
It's easy for me to say but as I know the 'doing' is the hard part.
Over to the Maestro Nolan.  :painting:

I really can’t give any advice, I have no experience with human portraits. All I can say is this is looking great!

Good job so far.  Lots more shadow work especially on the right side which seems to be the shadow side.  You might check that side as the cheek seems a bit too wide there.  You could blend the line above the eye to make it a bit more lost line.  Keep going you are on the right track here.  Portraits are hard especially if you know the person.  Can't wait to see the next installment.

looking great so far

The main issue I see is that the dimple on the right hand side in in place, but the far right hand side is too light. Darken that up on the edge of the face to show the face continues to recede away from you.

What I do is make a print at the exact size I am drawing / painting as it makes it easier to judge angles, etc. With commissions I then also lay some baking paper (parchment or tracing paper) over the photo and trace the outlines.

I can then lay this tracing over the artwork at any time to make sure none of my edges have drifted during the painting process as that is the difference between a likeness and not

:thankyou: for all your helpful info. I shall carry on and stop being so critical
Thankyou Nolan for your advise much appreciated.
I notice now for some reason the right side of the photo has come out way lighter than the original, maybe next on my list of things to do is to take proper photos.  ;D

This is a beautiful portrait, Win. I’ve not seen the reference to compare likeness but I’m sure you have captured her character in your work.  :smitten:
