In order for me to easily find and answer queries about this Lesson I will appreciate it if everyone will keep these to this specific Lesson Posting only. This will also be of benefit to you as well in the future. Thanks

This was even more fun. I`m kind of satisfied with the picture but I`ll try once more to get it better. Have a litle blue in the red in the flowers?
-
Harold! That's fantastic!!! :congrats: Very nice indeed!
That's amazing that you painted along with Dennis and you have it posted here already!
-
Wow! I get home and there is already a completed painting waiting for me to take a look at
Very well done for a paint-a-long. That bit of blue in the shadow areas is still ok. Depending on the time of day and the condition of the sky (clouds) the colour of the shadows will also change to suit.
I'm impressed. :flowers:
-
That's beautiful...the frame really sets it off. Great job, Harald.
-
Super job Harald. You are coming along famously. O0
-
Wow! A very nice painting!
-
Well done on a super job Harald.   Beautiful
-
Here is my attempt. I enjoyed the lesson. The banter and laughter made it seem more relaxed and like a face to face class. The classes keep getting better and better. I look forward to Sunday afternoons (North Carolina time). :smitten:
Denise
-
Denise, this is wonderful! I really like the soft colors in the background!
-
Thanks for your comments Denise - much appreciated. :flowers:
You certainly have captured the 3D effect in the petals
-
Denise, you did a very nice job with the magnolias.
-
Denise, how wonderful! ;D
The magnolias seem to pop out of the background. Gorgeous 3D effect
-
Hello everyone, thank you for the nice comments, really appreciate it.
Denise your comments regarding the class is that I should have said them myself only better expressed. Looking forward to Sunday.
Your Magnolia is absolutely beautiful.
Regards Harald
-
I'm really sorry I missed this one. :'(
Your magnolias are gorgeous guys. The 3D effect is brilliant.
Only another 20min. left to watch in #3
-
Sometime, I feel like screaming you, Val! :pullhair: Your determination is to be admired! O0
-
Denise    fabulous job on your Magnolias.

H & D
NICE !!!
Now back to my color wheels and mixing charts
Regards,

:( Can't remember how to upload my painting and where it is uploaded to. :help:
:thankyou:
-
Hope this has the painting attached. :( Hope I get the hang of this soon. Love the classes.
-
Glad you are enjoying the classes. Your painting looks very good
I'm just missing the shadows in the petals. Add them and then you will see the 3d effect of the petals.
-
Hi guys I'm back. It looks like everything is running smooth. I see the magnolias are blooming. All the paintings look great. I have a lot to catch up with.
Nina
-
Welcome back, Nina. Nice to see you here again. I hope you had a fabulous time. :flowers:
-
Thanks Lillian,
Yes we did. Our son has graduated. So they will be coming back home to Branson Mo. We got to go shark tooth hunting. Went on an air boat to the swamp area, to see the alligators. That was fun. Then went to Cocoa Beach to see the ocean. So yes it was fun. Now I have to get caught up on here. and my house. :2funny:
It looks like everyone is doing great art on here. But I am glad to be back.
Nina

wshortstuff
I particularly like the bottom half of the "background" ...Impressive!
Regards,
Brian
Nina,
Sounds like a very enjoyable trip, And i suspect a lot of pride in your son!
-
nina glad to see you back and sounds like you had a great trip, you must be so proud of your son welcome back1 :)
-
Nina, we lived in a little town called Sedalia, Missouri for several years. Vacationed in Branson. Now, we live in Florida.
-
Hey C.B.
Yes I know Sedalia, MO. In fact we are from Mo. I was rasied around the area of Cameron, Mo. My husband was born around they Richmond, Mo. area. Then we moved here to Kansas in 1978. We have talked about moving back to Missouri. But we have about 8 rentals, a plumbing business, and a farm. It would take awhile to downsize. It is good to be back. I watched the magnolia lesson. I think this will be fun to do. I have to get ready for an art show here in May. But I am not sure what to put in the art show. OH WELL IT WILL COME. ;D
Nina

Here is my attempt at the magnolia painting in watercolour
-
Excellent work, Gail!   You really captured the 3D effect of those petals and the flowers really pop right off the page.
-
Gail you have made an excellent rendering of the Magnolia
I only have one problem with it though. The main flower's petal on the right is overly large. Please check it again your template or did you draw it freehand?
-
Here is my feeble attempt at shadows. Hope I can get the pic attached.
-
There you go. Now there is depth to the petals
-
 Nice work guys, fabulous magnolias.
-
Nice Job, Wshortstuff!
-
Now that you mention it, it does appear larger. I enlarged the picture a little to fit my page, so I must have made an error in the transfer. Oops, it's watercolour so I can't fix it now. Actually I have trouble with resizing most of the pictures. Can't resize the pdfs to change the size. In my own work I normally resize a jpg and print it out to whatever size I need. Have tried the graph method, but don't have time/patience for fiddling with it. Wondering if there is another method to resize and transfer without spending oodles of money on light machines.
-
what you can do is to scan the printout of the template and the save it as a jpg. From there you can resize it.
-
 Thanks all for the kind words. Denise, it is amazing how much a little shadow can do. Thanks.
See you in the w/c pencil class.
-
thanks dennis. It is an additional step, but considering the fact that this has happened a number of times, maybe worth trying. Here is a tip for you. I notice that you spend a fair amount of time using a graphite pencil to transfer your images onto the canvas/watercolour paper. I have a number of graphite sticks-about 1/2 inch diameter-one 2B and one 6b. I use them to transfer my images and they are amazingly fast-seconds compared to the several minutes the pencil takes, and you don't need to be that neat. Short work of a tedious chore.
-
Excellent tip Gail O0  I've never seen graphite sticks like that. Another addition to the list! ::)
-
There is nothing wrong with a dark background - specially for a light subject. The darker the background the lighter the light subject shows up. Your magnolias show up very well because of this.
Your painting has a very nice fresh look to it. I know that you normally don't see this but I have found that if you add a small white highlight on the center (in the yellow portion of the stamens) it really makes the flower alive. I mention this in the video.
-
Martina, your magnolias are marvelous! ;D O0 I really like the colors.
-
 Beautiful Magnolias Matina. Nice 3D effect, I like the darker background....really makes them pop!
-
Martina, YOU GO GIRL!!!! I like your magnolias! O0 O0
Nina
-
Brilliant! I like the contrast of the blossoms against the dark background. Great 3D effect too!
-
Wow... :heeha: guys/gals... you have done a really great job on your Magnolias...
-
I was finally able to sneak a little painting time in! Even if it was midnight! :)
-
:thankyou: all for your very friendly comments on my painting ;D ;D ;D
-
C., your magnolias are wonderful and the leaves and the background are very nice, so realisitc O0 O0 O0
-
C.B. This is nice. I love magnolias. Good job. O0
Nina
-
C.B You live in Flordia, have the magnolias bloomed there yet? When they do could you take some pictures of them. When we were there they had not bloomed yet.
Nina ;D
-
CB lovely. i like the details you added.
The early magnolias are just about finished in NC. I will try to get photos before they are all gone. We have had a very hot spring so flowers are all blooming at once and fading quickly.
Denise
-
You've made an excellent job of the magnolias, Christina.
Just make the bud sitting in the enfolding leaves instead of sitting on top of them. Otherwise well done O0
-
Beautifully done Christina
-
Wonderful magnolias C. I'm going shopping for a light so I can work when the light is gone. Nights are usually quiet so a good time for me.
-
:thankyou: for your tip, Dennis! Would you recommend to add that highlight you wrote about to the finished painting? Scraping out or using white paint? :-\
I'd like to do another one with these magnolias as a gift for my mum. So I will have the opportunity to paint it with the highlight anyway. I'm thinking about the background - no, you convinced me - the dark background makes a nice contrast :) but the purple colour wouldn't go with the furniture in the room. Any suggestion?
-
:thankyou:, Val, Martina, Nina, Leana and Denise!
Nina, unfortunately there aren't any magnolias close by! We do have them here, but just not in my neighborhood. We are going to DC in a couple of weeks and I was really looking forward to seeing the cherry blossoms, but my husband(who's there on a business trip) said they have already been in bloom for about 3 wks. They probably won't last until we get there! :'( I was really looking forward to some great reference photos! :(
Thank you for pointing that out, Dennis. It's funny how you miss little things like that, until a trained eye points it out. Then it's obvious to you!
-
C., your magnolia painting is beautiful!
We're having an early spring here, hopefully the magnolia tree in our back yard blooms soon. Wish those lovely blooms would last longer.
-
Fantastic work on your Magnolias everyone, they all look so good.
-
Martina, it is difficult for me to say which colour will suit your Mom's decor as I have not seen it. Any colour that is dark (not easy to make out the colour) will be OK. An almost black colour (Ultramarine with a touch of orange) or a very dark green (viridian with light red added) will also be OK.
These are only suggestions. Try small swatches of various colours to experiment with. Dark colours require lots of pigment with the least amount of water possible.
-
Well i have finished my Magnolias ,i am happy with the flowers but not so much the background, will have to keep practicing.
-
Very well executed indeed    Just missing the highlights on the stamens though.
I'm not too concerned with the background as it does not detract from the flowers. I just want to see if the techniques have been applied properly. It seem that I have a lot of top class students already O0
-
:thankyou: very much Dennis for your suggestion! I think I will try a dark green background.
-
Helen, your magnolias look very nice! Well done!
I like the background, nice wet in wet with soft edges O0
-
Gorgeous. That's it Helen...that's all you get! :2funny:
Excellent work. :congrats:
-
I know what you mean C. I used to travel down to work on a number of boats around DC and have been fortunate enough to arrive at times at the height of the cherry blossoms. Indescribable! I think I lost those early pics when my computer died last year. Mother nature has ways of playing tricks on us...I've seen tourists come just to see them and they would either bloom early or late...its a challenge! ;D
-
Helen, your magnolias look really good! O0 I like seeing variety in our paintings. My background wasn't purple like Dennis's painting. Much bluer!
-
Dennis...I've put the magnolia on a 9 X 12 w/c pad as it's the only one I have that is 140#. Should I attempt to do it the way you did on the lesson, or, is it a better idea to masking fluid the flower to do the background as the background is much smaller inside the flower ? The bigger paper I have, 11 X 15 is only 90# and with that much water it really curls. I am looking forward to the painting and I'm awaiting the proper paper and weight to arrive at the stationery store.
Now that I have the picture drawn on and the making tape on it....it reeeeeely looks small!! LOL Big enough for a nice pic, but.........!!
Thanks for your input, and for all who reply to my dilemma!
-
The size I chose for the lessons was a convenient size only - no more no less. Any bigger will be an uncomfortable size for all the weekly lessons. This size was also chosen to enable me to finish a demo within the time span for the day. At times I will use a larger format to demonstrate certain techniques or subjects. Occasionally I will split a lesson into 2 or more parts if I need to really show you special techniques.
It is not absolutely necessary to use the masking tape either - it just makes it look more professional when displaying unframed.
If you want to paint smaller - no problem - just reduce the size of the template until it is the size you want it to be. If you are unable to do it yourself then someone will be able to do it for you on a photocopier.
Another thing - I did not use the masking fluid here just to show that you can still do good paintings without its use - you just have to be careful with the lines and not to lose the whites of the paper.
-
Thanks Dennis. I did reduce the size to fit, and that's why it's so small inside the flower to "tap" in the background. I'll give 'er a whirl...if it doesn't work...I'll try one with the fluid. (Yeah..I need the masking tape around the outside....Looks sooooo much neater and finished.)
-
Well here is my magnolia. I forgot my highlights in some areas. But it was fun. Will have to do this again.
Thanks Dennis.
I even put it in the right forum. :2funny: :2funny:
Nina
-
Tousabella,
I use the 9x12. I do not reduce them. Plus I do not waste watercolor paper. I think they look fine. I also buy the matte frames at hobby lobby to put around my paintings. that way I don't have to mess with frames, but still see what they look like framed out. They are not very expensive. And they make your paintings stand out. So you can really see the mistakes. :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:
No when I get real good :2funny: :2funny: at this watercolor painting then I will go to bigger sizes.
Nina
-
You're getting good already    Well done. You have the nice 3D effect of the petals and the background does not detract from the painting.
-
Thanks Dennis I appreciate you.
Nina
-
Good work Nina  Looks lovely. O0
-
Very nice your magnolias, Nina! Really beautiful 3D effect
-
Nina, you did a splendid job with the magnolias!
-
Nina, as always, another wonderful job!
-
Thanks everybody for the kind words.
Nina :flowers:
-
Excellent rendering of the flowers, Bhavna
Be careful with the bud - you have the same highlight on each side of the bud (symmetrical). Tone them down on the right hand side. What worries me is that you have darkened the spaces between the petals in the top flower. This adds too much weight to the top of the painting. The shadows should only be with the main flower.
-
Thanks Dennis, I will try to fix the shadows on the top flower.
-
Gently and carefully soften the outside edges of the shadows and lighten them towards the center of the flower until you are halfway in - then leave it.
-
Ooops posted the wrong one. Here is the correct pic.
-
There you go    Excellent retouching job O0
Now look at the difference ;)
-
well done bhavna really nice work
-
Excellent work, Bhavna, your magnolia painting is awesome!
-
Bhavna, very nice painting, really beautiful these magnolias. How did you lighten the shadow area on the top flower? Re-wetted and used a brush?
-
Thanks Everyone. Yes Martina I re-wetted and used the brush to lift some of the color.
-
I am so impressed with everyone's work and the refinements made!!
I was well on my way to addressing the flowers, Set it all aside for the nite and when i went back in the morning   "Somebody" ( father time??) had been at my painting :fight: :fight:
The background that had looked so well at nite, dried terrible!!!
had to take a couple o' days out of the studio, but back at it tomorrow!!
(Kinda glad the re-play of reflections is NOT up yet)
I feel a like the little boy who's dog ate his homework :yippee: but now I get to learn form Dennis's suggestions for improvement. :yippee:
Regards
brian
-
:sneaky: Sneaky.....!!
-
ME! Sneaky? >:D >:D
HeHeHe
That is #1.....#2 is started, and ready for 'repair" already
I watch Dennis do washes and then I watch Dennis do washes, again and then a third time.....Then I attempt to do what Dennis does :'( :'( :'( I hate washes!!!
No, not really, but I sure does get frustrated :tickedoff: So now that I have sounded off, I'll go work on the background of Magnolia#2 and learn about repairing H2O color backgrounds THIS time,... and I can hear Dennis "Don't fiddle :knuppel2: :knuppel2:"
What an awesome opportunity to be part of such a supportive, like minded group with Dennis and Nolan providing guidance :knuppel2:, knowledge :smart: and support :hammer: :hammer:
:thankyou:Thank you ALL for being part of MY journey :thankyou:
Regards
brian
-
Brian, your magnolias are well done! Your shadows really make them come to life.
-
Well done Brian, you have made an excellent job of the flowers
Don't worry too much about the background. Remember that this is a bunch of flowers on the tree and in the background there are lots of out of focus leaves and twigs. This just puts it in the proper setting. O0
-
Brian I like your magnolias. you did a very nice job on them. O0 O0
Nina
-
:congrats: Brian! Well done! Your watercolor painting continues to improve.
-
here is the second painting
Now on to REFLECTIONS
P.S. Lillian Your chicks are awesome!!!
Regards to all
brian
-
Very nice, Brian    I see you jazzed it up a bit with the bright green leaves :2funny: O0
-
Brian! You did it again!!! Wow! Practice, practice, practice, that's the key! :congrats: Nice work!
-
   Awesome Brian... nicely done.
-
Both good goes Brian
-
Very nice paintings, Brian. Really beautiful O0  :)
-
Colors are not as bright as the actual painting.
-
Nicely done Gloria. You have a light touch. O0
-
Gloria, your painting looks lovely. The background colours set it off really well. I look forward to reading technical feedback form others. Well done
-
Gloria, your Magnolias reflect their beautiful background, yet still have that nice cupping effect.
-
I really enjoy seeing all the variety in everyone's magnolias. Great job, Gloria!
-
I sure agree...nice job. It's so great to see the difference in people's choice for the backgrounds in their paintings. It's wonderful. Sometimes, like myself, it's the brand of paint we use, too, which lends to a lively or quiet outcome.
Great job, Gloria. Your flowers are beautiful.
-
Thanks all for the input.
-
I painted the magnolias today. It took me the better part of the day. I did stop a few times but I sure don't know how Dennis can paint so fast!!!
I enjoyed the replay and enjoyed painting this. I'm pretty pleased with it but if anyone here has any suggestions for improvement, I'd be pleased to hear from you.
-
I'm happy with your painting
My speed comes because I've been painting in watercolours since 1946 - as mentioned in another post - I work on auto-pilot :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:
The more you practice the easier it becomes and the faster you will be able to paint.
-
   Your Magnolias take my breath away   :D :D
The only suggestion I have is that you paint a second one and send it to me :thankyou:
Maria :painting:
-
:thankyou: Dennis and Maria.
Ok Dennis, I'll try auto pilot and see if that works for me! :2funny:
-
Lillian it`s really fine with a lots of depth in the flowers. Harald
-
good job Lillian, very beautiful    I am in agreement with Maria, what's 3 but great practice :2funny:
-
Wonderful work Lillian.
-
Well Gloria and Lillian you guys did a VERY nice job on your magnolias. O0 O0
Practice makes perfect. You can paint a fourth one and send it to me. ;D Just let me know when you want my address. :2funny: :2funny:
Nina :flowers:
-
It's so nice of you to say that Nina. I am still having problems with mixing my colors so I have to do some work on that.
-
Thanks for all the kind comments on my magnolia painting. It didn't seemed to take forever to do. I enjoyed doing this one though.
Onward I march now, getting ready to do the next exercise. Oh yes, I just remembered there's another watercolor class tomorrow! Just when I thought I was getting ahead! :
-
:heeha: Lillian  you've done it yet again!!!! :faint: You continue to dazzle.
-
Val! Thanks! :thankyou: :1hug:
WHERE ARE YOU??? Nice to see you here!
-
Stunning magnolias Lillian
-
 Still in Culebra, looks like we'll head for Ponce, PR Tuesday. Of course this delay has nothing to do with my whining/pouting, stamping of feet to 'try' to see the class tomorrow....
-
really really like your magnolia painting lillian very well done!!   if mine looks like that when i get to that lesson! i will be well pleased :yippee:
-
I hope to see you there Val. Here's hoping you can stay connected and that there will be no tech. problems cropping up for Nolan.
-
:thankyou: Jennylynn. I just followed the video as best I could. I'm sure you can do that. :) Dennis is so straightforward, explains everything so well. the background is my own doing, just mucking around with the paint.
-
Lillian, your magnolias are just wonderful.
I especially like the shadow colours in the petals! Awesome 3D effect ;D
-
:thankyou: Martina. :1hug:
-
Gloria and Lillian:
Nice!
-
:thankyou: Brian
-
Brain and Gloria and Lillian I didn't paint the magnolias because I was awAy but now I've seen your flowers I'm sorry I didn't try too. They are attractively coloured and nicely shadowed.
-
Karen, you are such a good painter it should be easy for you. I am way behind in all the classes so I am doing them at random.
-
Lillian, your magnolias are beautiful! The colors of the flowers are wonderful!
-
:thankyou: Brian, Karen & C., I am quite pleased with my magnolia painting. I pinned it up to gaze at for a while. I think Dennis did a fabulous job creating this composition and the colors. The flowers have a nice 3D effect that really make them pop off the page.
I think all the magnolias done so far are fabulous and I'm looking forward to seeing lots more here. Keep them coming! :)
-
 :yippee:
-
Hi everyone,
Still catching up. Today I knocked off some magnolias. Let me know what you think.
Batman.

Magnolias |
-
Well done    You have captured the 3D effect very well O0 I see improvements coming up ;)
-
You did really well 'knocking off' :) those magnolias, Batman.
-
Batman, you are really flying through these paintings!!! Your magnolias look very good! O0
-
Batman
Nice Job 8)!
It is such a trip watching everybody grow! and it makes it E-Zer to accept that I am also!
From MY past experience, I would bet you do not recognize how FAST u r growing :) :)
Again, nice job!
Brian
-
Hey BATMAN, nice job!! O0
Nina :flowers:
-
:thankyou: Dennis, Lillian, C. and Brian, nice to know I'm getting this stuff right. At least technically.
I realise that what I post at the moment isn't quite as polished/smooth as some of the others I saw posted, but that will come with time and more :painting: I've been able to get a bit done this week by taking week off work while things have died down there.
Thought I'd originally stuffed the background up - even though it is winter here, the wash dried incredibly quickly from what it seemed to for Dennis. The green and brown went on too hard edged. Was going to start again, but then out of the corner of my eye I noticed my little spray bottle, and gave it a few sprays. Softened the edges up nicely. :yippee:
Nina, I did it for the ladies... >:D :2funny:
Batman.
-
I have got to find me one of those little spray bottles. Very nicely done Batman ... moving along famously.
-
Thanks Val.
The spray bottle I ended up getting is from the hair products section of the supermarket. They spray a super fine mist and is a nice small size too.
I just poured the product inside down the drain, cleaned it out thoroughly and then refilled with water. Don't forget to clean out the tube by spraying a fair bit of the fresh water down the drain too.
Batman.
-
Excellent, I'll keep an eye out for one. :thankyou:
-
Imbatman, your painting has shown up large! That's great and, it shows what a wonderful job you have done. The background brings it all together into a coherent whole. That would look stunning displayed anywhere.
Well done!
-
Thanks for that Tony.
The encouragement around here is pheonomenal. It makes me get up and go to work 5 days a week, so that the weekend can come around to do some more :painting:
Funny thing is that with Dennis there guiding, I don't find Watercolours that much of a hassle. Dunno why so many peeps are afraid of them.
I guess the first part of that paragraph summed it up nicely, didn't it?
Batman.
-
very nice
-
O0 Looks good Pamela!
I haven't done this one....yet!
-
Pamela - Nice job on the Magnolias!
I haven't done these yet either! I really do need to get back to the beginning of the course! I got side-tracked by jumping ahead to the Watercolor Flower live classes!
-
:thankyou: SunRai and ncwren
-
Nicely done Pamela
I like your 'looser' background as well. O0
-
:thankyou: Rita and Val
-
I like your magnolias, Pamela.
-
:thankyou: Lillian
-
Nice job Pamela. O0 O0 O0
Nina :flowers: :flowers:

Pamela Meredith
#1.... :welcome:
#2 Nice job
I very much like the washes with in the petals , the ability to avoid hard edges is a skill!
brian
-
:thankyou:
-
   Beautiful magnolias everyone! You guys are way ahead of me. I just got this class this week, so here is my contribution. Just loved doing this and loved the scratching the paper trick, Dennis!
-
njnjgirl, you are just conquering one after the other! Great job on the magnolias!
-
Pamela, I guess I missed these, when I was on my trip. The Magnolias are Beautiful!
-
:thankyou: Cbodine.
-
:smitten: Really lovely njnjgirl!
-
Great work there Njngirl. Nice colourings and good shadings. Well done.
-
Thank you :thankyou: NcWren and Val
-
njnjgirl
Well done!!
Brian
-
njngirl - very pretty Magnolias! O0 I haven't done this lesson yet, so you have me curiouos - scratching the paper trick? I guess I better go watch this lesson!! :run:
-
:thankyou: Sunrai and Brian. The trick is to scratch off a bit of paint on the stems to create those little white spots. Also, scratching the paper to add veins in the leaves, pretty cool ! 8)
-
njnjgirl - You really got me curious - so I watched the video last night!
That is really something! I just hope I have a steady hand when I do that! All I need is to SLIP :cursing: :censored: But, it really does the trick to get those white areas, and much more realistic than using masking fluid would be for this particular look.
-
njnjgirl. Great job. O0 O0
Nina :flowers:
-

This is absolute beautiful work. Well done! Amazing watercolour painting.
-
:thankyou: so much Nina and Valweb. Yes, Sunrai, it's a great little trick.
-
Well executed, njnjgirl
-
A big :thankyou:, Dennis!
-
OK - I finally got my Magnolia lesson done!
-
Well done Pat    Love the mottled background. Don't forget the very light yellow highlight on the center of the flowers.
-
Very nice Pat.  I really must go back and see the flower lessons...

Beautiful Magnolias Pat

Thanks, everyone! :thankyou: This was another fun Flower lesson!

Beautiful, Pat! Love the background and the flowers are perfectly brilliant!
-
Thanks again everyone. :thankyou:
I still have several more of the flowers to do! I'm trying to go back and do some of the lessons I skipped, because I jumped into the live classes when the flower series was on. Now, I can't quit the live classes! So, I'm trying to do a bit of both. I've been a bit lame the last several months so I'm going pretty slowly. But, I'm on the mend, so I hope to pick up the pace soon. I can't believe the last class is this next Sunday!! But, maybe that will give me time to catch up. I wonder what's in store for us next year! :nosey: ???
-
We'll just have to wait until the Christmas Bag is opened - it has not arrived as yet - even I can't stand the waiting game :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:
-
Come on Dennis-spill the details! ;)
-
:2funny: These Clark boys are :devil2: :devil2: when it comes to teasing you along. :D
I'm going to make sure Anna and Mel hide all the sweets this year until we get some hints! >:D
-
I guess I'll just have to be patient! I have enough to keep me busy until then - but the curiosity is killing me!! :death:
-
I'm another one waiting for that Christmas bag to open  ....it's been sooo long.....
Did some magnolias while waiting. Really enjoyed this Dennis, :thankyou:
-
Denise....really beautiful! :smitten:
-
Denise and SunRai,
Your Magnolias are beautiful. I love both of your backgrounds. It makes me want to hurry and finish the Pencil Drawing course so I can get back into watercolor. But first things first. I'm almost done.

:congrats: Lovely work, Denise.

Lovely painting:)

:thankyou: Natalie :thankyou: Red :thankyou: Lillian :smitten:

Thank you Bhavna!! :)

Denise--Saw this in the gallery and that is really stunning!! Bravo
-
I agree, Denise. Very pretty. We don't have magnolias here. It has been hard to imagine that deeply cupped petal. Your background is wonderful.
-
Beautiful Denise   Lovely vibrant colours, well done shadings. You are progressing leaps and bounds with each painting. Wonderful.
-
Wonderful, Denise!
-
Lynn, Sarah, Val and Christine, Thank you sooo much! I really enjoyed this lesson.
We also had a good laugh -- some of you ladies may remember someone accidentally drinking their watercolour water instead of their tea?! too funny... :2funny:
-
Beautiful magnolias Denise. I really think that is well done!!    I also love your background.
-
Denise, Great magnolias! Love the background and the shading!
-
Well guys, I'm back near the beginning and going to try and follow the recommended class order...but I may get sidetracked if something looks just too good to pass! >:D
Here's my magnolia, and yes Batman it is original...see the cauliflower? I knew it was too good to last! :2funny:
-
Getting well behind my painting and trying desperately to catch up. Here is my magnolias...
-
Bravo, both of you! Val I like the background and suggestions of other plants. Even the cauliflower gods are working here for you. Sometimes they are okay. Mihaela it almost looks as if you have done a universal wash on all but the front magnolia. It really POPS! I just remembered a tip that an instructor gave me on cauliflowers that made soooo much sense to me. Dennis has probably mentioned it, but in case he hasn't...every time you rinse your brush in water you have to roll the base (ferrule end) on paper towel or rag before going to fill your brush with paint. We know there has to be more pigment in the paint we are adding than what is in the wash on the paper, or the water will push the pigment already on the paper away from what we add. But what we forget is that the water under the ferrule is working its way down to the tip of the brush. Doh! Cauliflower, just when we thought we had the pigment balanced correctly. Hope this makes sense.
-
You're so right Sarah... I knew that but to tell the truth, I usually want the cauliflower effect. Crazy, I know. I learnt how to get rid of them too so, if they're not to my liking, I can take them off. By the way... this one i did it last weekend, just didn't get the chance to scan it (since you asked if I did all of them today :P)
-
Val and Mihaela you both have done great job with you painting
-
Mary Lou and Dianne, this is a late response but :thankyou: :thankyou: appreciate it :)
Val and Mihaela, sooo beautiful. They are both so different but very pretty!  Yeay for cauliflowers!... or not.
-
Very pretty magnolias Val and Michaela. I really like both of these paintings and think they are both done well. Bravo!
-
Thanks guys. Sorry for the short reply, am back to working with the android...not keen on the touchscreen typing. Sometimes it takes more like punch than a tap :fight:

Good to see you back in form Val. O0 :2funny:
Dennis needs to create a Cauliflower emoticon! Or maybe he could outsource that job to you... :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:

Mihaela and Val... Love your mags!!

I want to do this one badly but failed on the cosmos in a big way. I can't seem to get the 3d look .
-
Bryce, if you post it under the cosmos lesson, maybe we can help.
-
Sitting down now to take the Magnolia Lesson. Perhaps I will see what I did wrong in my attempt at Cosmos. If not, expect some wilted flowers to show up around here......
-
A little water and we'll have you blooming! ;)

Bryce
Like Val said, post what you have done and maybe we can give some assistance to help you move forward.
A saying that is attributed to either Einstein, Benjamin Franglin, or chinese proverbs is "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." :uglystupid2:
If we can give some advice on how to change, you might be able to apply those to the next project and improve.
I for one have never posted something here and received a reply such as "we don't know what is wrong, you are simply a failure."
Give it a try :smart: thoughts come from this little community.
Batman.
-
Batman, You are so right in what you posted to Bryce and I cannot agree more. This is the most helpful, caring family of tutors and forum members I have ever had the pleasure of communicating with, especially when you are feeling "down" about your effort in whatever you are painting, for they come to your rescue with helpful advice, constructive solutions or suggestions and generally just lift you up every single time. It is just such a pleasure to belong. Patricia

Re the wonder flower paintings......Nina said it well!!!
Bryce,
Batman is "Spot on!!!"
pleas post. we ALL learn together and from each other.

Nice work on the 3D effects Natalie.
Batman.
-
Natalie, your magnolia painting is very beautiful. Well done and I really like the background. :smitten:
-
:thankyou: I was worried about the background...just goes to show it pays to keep one's mouth shut! :)
-
This was my first one, I've spoilt background on this one.
Then I made the second one
The wash was good at first but too light, and the whole picture looked somewhat flat, I added and added colour, so I ended up with somewhat spoilt background again
I still have a feeling the second picture is somewhat flat, any comments and corrections are very :welcome:
-
Both are good paintings. I actually prefer your first as the lighter background brings the flower forward a bit more. I think in the second one, the petal shadings are not as nicely blended, and the value between the flower and the background are a bit too close, making it look a bit flat. Those are just my perceptions, others will see it differently.
That said, excellent job...you're doing fantastic.
-
Thank you Val, I absolutely agree that the 1st picture looks less flat :)
-
I looked at this before and wasn't quite sure so I didn't comment.. But I think I agree with the "wisdom of Val"!
:2funny: .
However, I think you are on the verge of a beautiful painting!
-
I see you are in the "flower series" Tanya :) and doing a super job! I like both versions but lean slightly more to the first one. Although, I really like the richness of the background in your second one
-
O0 Nice painting Tanya, I also prefer the first painting because the flowers seem to be more prominent. Patricia
-
Thank you so much for sharing your opinion, ladies :flowers:
-
I really enjoyed doing this one, I think it's my favorite so far. I've just noticed I've missed a bit of shadow from near the centre on one of the petals in the lower flower ::) but I'll put that in next time I get my paints out. ;) Watercolour pencils next - that should be fun
-
This is one of my favorite interpretations, too. Well done!
-
I like your first one Tanya! ;)
Beautiful job Pebble.
-
Tanya, I'm going to concur with the everyone else. I like the first painting best, but both of them are very nice. :flowers:
Such pretty magnolias, Pebble! I love your background, and the flowers look just like the ones blooming in my front yard right now!
Hugs,
Jani

Looks great Pebble, I enjoyed this one too.

Great work there. This one was a real eye opener for me.

O0 O0 Pebble, lovely bright, happy painting. Patricia
-
I finally came to this lesson, which I was really looking forward to. I love this technique. For me, all the shading and blending was a challenge. I was having a hard time knowing when to stop blending, and there were a couple of times that I kept rubbing the paper too long and tore up the paper beneath. :( I also tried Batman's tip on using very little water with the paint, and I like the vibrant color on the outer leaves. Here you go:
-
Jani beautiful job. O0

It's 104 degrees in Sacramento today - a good day to stay inside and paint! We have magnolia trees blooming nearby so this was a good one for me to try...and I enjoyed the lesson enormously!
This is a magnolia I did in a different class earlier this year...

Banner work Jani and Sharon O0    I really enjoyed doing this one as well. :)

Jani, looks like your blending went well with no sign of damaged paper! background is beautiful too, reminds me of Monet's water lilys ......
Sharon, you seem to be a natural at watercolour :) . Both magnolias are gorgeous!

What lovely comments from everyone - thank you! My friends can't believe I painted this in an afternoon - and I really appreciated the instructions on shading. That really makes a painting come to life. Doina, glad we're pushing you to do this lesson - you'll love the end results!

Lovely paintings Sharon. O0
Nina :flowers:

A very nice painting, Cyril
What bothers me and which does not do justice to your nice painting is the blue cast all over the photograph.
This is not a painting error but to do with the camera. See if your camera has settings for white balance and experiment with them until you find the correct setting.
-
It looks like a good painting Cyril, but it is difficult to see the colourings and shadings. Perhaps another photo?

I liked what I learned this week about putting the shadow area in while leaving the white border to give the petal a cupped appearance. I just hope I didn't go too dark. And about keeping the focus on the largest flower. So many tricks Dennis is teaching me. I am really looking forward to using watercolor pencils. I have never used them and am interested in learning more techniques. Any comments would be welcome.
Kay

:heeha: Kay! You have definately got the looking in happening there. Well done. You've also done a great job of creating a background that gives the impression of more flowers behind. Well done. O0
The w/c pencils are a real treat, so many ways to use them. Have fun! :yippee:

Kay,
This magnolia painting is lovely.
I am so glad you mentioned the shading inside the white to give the cupped appearance. Not having taken this class, I did not know that.
Thanks for the tip.

mea
-
Excellent painting, Kay    Even if you have gone a tad too dark it still can be seen as a white flower. I feel that the top bud is a bit too "heavy" and can be toned down a bit. The small leaves below the bud are a bit too large and can be softened somewhat. Somehow you have "squared it" it. Keep up the good work O0
-
Thank you Val, mea & Dennis. I knew that the bud was drawing too much attention but couldn't figure out why. The leaf is really square on the bottom & I didn't notice it. I will change it and tone down the bud & leaf color. Thank you.

Just got the newsletter and there and behold was this awesome painting!!!!!!!!!!!! and when i "clicked" on the flower, got the chance to see the other painting
Both of you have done a great job.
P.S. I know what a challenge that class was... Been there, done that and you both did real good!!

Kay congratulation on your beautiful magnolia :painting: and on your appearence on the news letter. O0

Hi all,
My magnolias were a difficult experience, first because I do not like them (they go brown in a few days and leave a mess when falling down... sorry!) and secondly because I was trying to paint along without sound since my husband was watching the worldcup.... not a good combination.
I realized the white borders that Kay mentions too late and had to reinstate them and lost my colours as well with too much mixing. All things considered not too bad then!! :D

You did a great job AiKe on your magnolias.   Dennis Are your brushes hair or synthetics, i am having a hard time with mine for big surfaces.

Ai Ke, no problem - they are still beautiful
Danielle, also a beautiful painting    What bothers me is the dark triangular shading with almost solid lines. Needs to be toned down a lot towards the flower. O0
-
Dennis :thankyou: for your advice, i kind of gave up, was having problems with my paint brush, maybe it is me. Your paint brush seams to hold so much more water than mine that seam to scrape my paper at times. What make of brush do you use?
:thankyou: Natalie and Mea for your comments.
-
It could be humidity where you are Danielle. I have to re learn water color everytime there is a shift in the weather. Right now my brush is practically drying before it touches the paper.
-
:thankyou: Nathalie for the tip, because i have been having problens lately with those brushes, and it has been raining lately.

Bryndis, Kay, AiKe, Danielle, Each of you did a very nice job on your flower. Way to go. O0 O0

Good depth on the petals and nice rounding on the centres and the bud! A different background might have made the flowers stand out a bit more but it looks like it was a good exercise for you! Nice job!
-
Jill, your flowers are very pretty! Nice colors! I like the way you did a variegated look in the background greenery.I agree with Tania, though. If you could do a wash over the background to darken it up, it will really make those flowers stand out!

Great job Jill

Sherri great painting I can see with yours what Mea was sharing about mine. Yours petals have a lot more shading so the petals do stand out a lot more creating more shape and depth!

Wow I loved this class, just my background is a bit on the dark side. ::)

Louisa, just smooth out the background so that it is not so spotty, then you will have a very good painting.   At the moment the background detracts from the flowers.
-
Thanks Dennis I will do so.

I second that! Smooth out the background and you'll see a marked difference. O0

I think your doing such a fantastic job on such a challenging medium.

you are doing very well in water color Louisa.

Thank you Val, Robin and Danielle, I never thought I will be able to do water colour. Somebody on facebook said in a very subtle way that I won't be able to do it. Well that's a challenge is it not?
The difference at PB is that everybody believes in everybody, thank you guys.
-
Looks like you've showed them Louisa
-
Louisa, i am glad you did not listen to negative people, they don't know what there talking about. Now you can show them how good you have become in the medium.
Thanks to Dennis we all learnt so much.

Yes Robin and Danielle, I still have a lot to learn and if it weren't for everybody at Paintbasket I sure would have given up, but with Dennis and Nolan's lessons anybody can paint. Love you guys.

Hi! I just started taking Paintbasket classes a few days ago. Here is my first attempt at posting a pic in a thread. I do a lot of trading in Artist Trading Cards (ATCs), so this is 2.5x3.5 inches.(http://) (Yay! I figured out how to post a pic here)
-
Way to go, KP. Glad you got to post your work.
Beautiful work on the magnolia. Love the background.
How about starting a thread under the Anything Arty topic on the FORUM page to tell us about Artist Trading Cards. I've seen the blank cards in the stores but don't know much about the practice.
So glad you brought a new dimension to our site. Look forward to hearing more about ATC's.

Nicely done KPinAK, what you need to practice here is blending/softening some of the edges of the shadings inside the petals. Just need to lose some of those hard lines.
Good job.
-
I *really* appreciate the feedback & suggestions! I'll be traveling the next few weeks then hope to have a chance to post in "anything artsy" about artist trading cards. Maybe I'll even have some watercolors of the places I visit to post. It's so nice to have a technique to focus on while I'm doing that--blending/softening my shadings when appropriate (while still remembering to shade--most recent comments i got from a juried things said I needed to shade more, that my paintings needed more value contrast). Loving these classes and the forum!!

Have fun and safe travels, KP. Yup, want to know more about Artists Trading Cards.
Looking forward to your WC paintings of your travels.

Val, when I first saw this class, I wasn't all that crazy about the painting. Now, I'm with you. It is one of my favorites.
Mea, I have a young magnolia tree in my front yard. There are many all throughout Riverside. Our trees here have white flowers. Quite beautiful. I had to look on the Internet to see the flower we painted as I've never seen a pink magnolia before.

Kathy, great job on the magnolia's. It's very vibrant, and fresh. Good job.

So true... :)

KP: Your magnolia is very nice. Just soften some of the shadows inside the flower.
Kathy: Your magnolia is beautiful. You can just look inside the flower. Your colors are great.

Sorry I miss you post KP. Inattention....
Welcome to PB and don't be shy to post your work. This is how we all learn, and how your will make fellow artists friends.
I am very impressed that you can do such a painting on a 2.5 x 3.5... barely bigger than a business card (2x3.5).
My WC are all 9x12" and my oil usually 12x16", few 16x20". What a difference in size!!! I like the 3 to 4 ratio.

This is the best of the two I did. Critics appreciated. Thank you.

 Lovely Annie. This was a fun painting to do, wasn't it?
-
Yes, It was.
I struggle with taking the photo, the background is gray on the post. It is a mauve/purple in reality.
-
Well done, Annie. Brings back memories of my mom's magnolia tree.
