JENNY! That's fabulous   :yippee:        I love this. Your water out front looks wet like you could dip right into it. The rocks, especially on the left are superb. Banner work here...AND you did it painting along! Brilliant.

Wow you guys sped along faster than me.  I didn't think I was going to finish, but my phonecall I was expecting happened right at the end, so once done the call I could finally sign and photograph.  Didn't spent any time touching up, probaby needs it. I like it, but think last weeks results were probably better.  Anyway, as usual it was fun.  Very intuitive for those who think it is hard-no just fun.  To all that posted, they look great

I can't leave well enough alone! I tried to get the mist at the bottom more misty and the right side rocks a bit darker.
My husband reckons there is more water volume at the bottom than at the top!

Nice Karen.  I like the bottom, I lost some of my whites too early.  If I do again, I will try harder to preserve them.  Wow 6 of us this time-I think the others are starting to catch on that following along is more fun than just watching Dennis, you can do that later if you want to work along with the video.  All that fun if you just let yourself go and only costs one single piece of paper!
Title: Re: LESSON #28 - Waterfalls (Part 4)
Post by: dennis on July 23, 2012, 08:40:00 PM
I am really impressed by the growing number of paint alongs and more so by the quality being produced. I can see the confidence being built up as a result of the paint alongs.    Well done keep it up.

Mary, just tone down the blue in the rock face on the right with some of the dull green and your painting will shine.

One general comment: be careful not to have any hard lines in the water reflections. They must all softly merge into one another. Hard lines result when the areas has become a bit too dry. Keep the paper damp until you are finished with the water.

We are going to have a nice lot of quality artists by the end of the year

  Definately better Harald.  The mist at the bottom of the falls is great. I'm thinking maybe just a tiny touch more colour on the right side of the falls near the top?
I like the rocks at the bottom better, more spaced out. Maybe a hint of colour there as well.
Great work Harald.   O0

Everything you did was very nice except the actual waterfall. The spots you added do not look natural. Remember the water is falling at a speed and you will only really see the water as streaks.

Here it is, finally.  I have another that I did and was going to post them both. The second has more detail, but, somehow the reflection went South! I enjoyed doing this one.

Post by: ImBatman on August 11, 2012, 10:53:05 AM
Thanks pollywag, much appreciated.

Tousabella, nice work. just couple of things. The cliff faces are a little too smooth, should be more craggy and I think you need a little more blue i the fall itself. However, the splashing at the bottom is a real winner!  O0
Migjht need a little more mistyness ont hight han corner where the fall meetst he the flat part of the river though.

Batman.

There's just something bothering me about those little rocks at the bottom of the falls.

I'll be looking forward to seeing what Dennis has to say.

Bella nice job on your rocks. I do agree with Batman about the right side of your cliff. The rocks in the water may need some shadow in the water. I think you are doing a fine job. KEPP IT UP!!  O0 O0

:thankyou:  My 'other' painting has much more detail, but I'm still trying to "fix" the reflection!   I sure appreciate the input from you all. This one was fun.
Title: Re: LESSON #28 - Waterfalls (Part 4)
Post by: dennis on August 12, 2012, 02:38:23 AM
Batman, well done.     Do you want to improve your painting even more? Just lighten the cliff on the right side as it in the sun while the one on the left is in shadow. Do this and you will see a major improvement.

Bella, I agree with Batman and Lillian about the right side cliff and especially the water and the rocks at the bottom (not the large reflection). Take another look at my painting.

At last I'm here with my large waterfalls painting.

I got so involved that when I finished it was after 6 pm and I thought I had missed the hibiscus painting class!

Whew!  I didn't!  What a relief!
I think it turned out better than all the others in the series.

How does it look to you?
Title: Re: LESSON #28 - Waterfalls (Part 4)
Post by: dennis on August 25, 2012, 11:29:30 PM
   Wonderful.  It can easily be left alone but my only suggestion is that the sunlit rock face (right) could be a bit more lighter and orange to indicate the sunlight on it.
Title: Re: LESSON #28 - Waterfalls (Part 4)
Post by: Lillian on August 25, 2012, 11:54:32 PM

:thankyou: one and all, Nina, Natalie, Lynn, Rita, Tina, Tony, Val and Mary.

Thankyou for your encouraging remarks!

I did try to lighten it and make it more orange.  I think it looks more in keeping with the left cliff now with more orange.

I'm not sure if I accomplished making it lighter.  I did some lifting out before adding a light wash of orange and putting the details back in.

It's always better to get it right the first time.

I did have fun painting this beautiful falls.  I would love to see the real thing.

I've just taken another look at your original Lillian. I think this updated version looks better even if it's not a big change. It seems to centralise the water falling and keeps us in the painting better.

Patricia, I see you got it done. I think it is not bad. A couple of things that I would suggest. The tree on the left is too round. I would also add some darks to the bushes at the top right. Congrats on getting it done.  O0 O0

:thankyou: Dianne, I agree.  Nina, I have just made the changes which you suggested and it has made a big difference especially the top right hand trees being darkened which somehow gives the painting more balance and the tree on the left doesn't look like a pompom any longer.  There was also a problem with the rock faces because they were far too uniform in the downward strokes and I tried to change them.  I am going to post the changes under this post for you to have a look at.  Still not the greatest painting but what the heck, I am learning every day.   Thanks once again for your advice which I always value and appreciate.    Patricia

:thankyou:  Roxy for your lovely comments.  I really appreciate them. I struggle with painting certain (all) scenes but it is a struggle I enjoy ... sounds like I am nuts .... for who really enjoys a struggle of any kind??? Perhaps I should have phrased it another way .... it is a challenge for me but one which I enjoy.  That sounds better!!!  Anyway, thanks a ton Roxy.  Patricia

Patricia, nice painting    One thing that worries me is the very dark semi-circle on the left. Tone it down with the top a bit lighter than the bottom part. What accentuates it more is the bright green tree on the left. That tree is completely in the shadow side of the cliff and should be darkened up. See if you can lighten the right cliff  a bit more as this side is in the bright sunshine. These changes will make a great difference to the painting.  O0

:thankyou: :thankyou:   Thank you Val and Dennis for your comments which are much appreciated.  Dennis, I did as you suggested by darkening the bright green tree on the left and lightening the dark green one at the top which is much better.  I also lightened the right side cliff and the improvement is great.  Thank you for your continued coaching and for all the encouragement I get from our forum members.  Bless you all.  Patricia

Okay, here's my 4th waterfall.  These are harder than they look.  Mary Lou you did a great job on this one.  I think I used up too much of the white in the falls.   It was also too large to scan the whole pic so alot of the top, bottom, and sides are cut off.

Red, if you are talking about the small waterfall painting, then I am the culprit, I moved it to Waterfalls #2 as it did not fall into this particular lesson of large waterfalls but into the small waterfalls category.

Very pretty waterfall Bhavna.  O0 O0 I like you bushes at the top right. You gave them a lot of depth. I would suggest that you might add some darks to the trees at the bottom of the fall to give them depth also. But over all you did a geat job.

Ai Ke,

You have done well.  Waterfalls are not easy as you found out.  Yes, agree with the others on reflections.

Top add a little extra drama, maybe just add a few more slightly larger rocks on the left side.  Although they are not quite "soldiers in a row," they do seem a bit too uniform.  Test it out by using a piece of clear film (I use a half side of a sheet protector) to draw maybe one rock behind the existing line of rocks and a couple others in front.

Nice work.

Maybe just a bit more shading on and around the rocks at the bottom of the falls.  They look too flat.

Well now, this was a challenge.... having watched the class and made a complete pig's ear of my watercolour version of this class, I decided to have a go at rendering it in pastels ....  What was I thinking??  The water spray nearly drove me to distraction and this nearly ended up in the bin on more than one occasion. But I decided to keep on at it and see where it took me. What a huge learning curve!! Still not 100% happy with the waterfall bit but I have learned so much from attempting it that the heartache was worth it  :)

As always comments, crits and suggestions are most welcome.

Fi,

I feel your pain - I too struggled with waterfalls.

Actually, your falls look good, but the wall behind looks flat - needs more texture, tones, etc.

Don't fret, I think it's better than most people could do.

The rocks at the bottom on the right could be varied more in size and placement.  But, they are beautifully painted.
