Hi all!  This will be my first live class.  I'm really excited about it!   :yippee:  I've decided not to try to paint along.  I'll listen and watch, and learn how it works, ask questions, and basically get acquainted with this format.

I have no idea how to log into it!   I don't see it listed in my Unlocked Classes.  ???  Can someone tell me how to do this, please?  :help:

Thanks, and see you in class (I hope!) - Pat

Jennilynn and Natalie - wonderful Arums!  I can't believe that you can actually paint along and finish them so fast!  They look great!  I'll try painting mine later.  I wanted to watch this one because I love Arums - I call them Calla Lilies - and they were one of the first flowers I drew as a child.  I hope I can paint them half as well as the two of you did.

I'm leaving in the morning for camping with my granddaughter (just the two of us), which we do every summer.  Hopefully, when we get back I'll be able to get back to some painting.

Anyway, I really enjoyed my first live class! I plan to take some more soon!

Jennylynn and Natalie, your Arum paintings are beautiful!

Pat, we also call them Calla Lilies.  They, as well as hydrangeas, are my favorite flowers.

Hi I am posting mine more for comic relief than anything else.  Part way through my husband changed my water then I knocked it over-a full litre onto my pallet, mouse, paintbrushes everywhere on floor.  Never really recovered, but told my husband I couldn't stop, while he mopped up.  So have a good laugh, the rest of you did a great job, me not so much-.  Thats what I've got for today.

That's good because soon you will be painting by "instinct" - cuts out the fiddling which destroys good paintings  ;)

Karen, it's beautiful!  I'm sure you did the right thing.  That lily really stands out now.  If I'm not mistaken, Dennis darkened the shadow side with raw sienna, but better check it out when the replay comes around or wait for someone to confirm.

I don't know what time it is there, but it's 1:14 a.m. here.  I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep.  Something popped in my head that I had to do, so I had to get up and write something down.

So here I am for a bit.   :2funny:

Karen, Natalie, Jennylynn and Gail.. You all did lovely paintings of the arum lilies.  Like CB, I call them Callas too.  Just to show how you always learn something new.... I was in the florist industry for 26 years before retiring.  These flowers were one of my favorites as well and used them in lots of weddings; and to this day I had never heard them called arum lilies before!  You girls should be proud of your work!! Only one problem. The insides of the lilies are too stripey.  Take a damp brush and merge the colours smoothly together. Do that and you will have a lovely painting.

Hi everyone,

Here are my Arum Lilies. I know the background is a lot richer purple than Dennis' - that's how I wanted it.

The scan doesn't show the painting the bestl (even though the thumbnail is more like the painting...) The dark spots at toppish right and left near the petals are where my fingers are pressing the A3 sheet down onto the A4 scanner bed - not actually part of the painting.

Let me know what you think.

Batman.

As I said before It's really interesting seeing all the different backgrounds and the changes they make to the feel of the lillies. We've all gone quite bold rather than pastel and delicate! Maybe it's got something to do with the quality of the flowers.
I love them but i've spent nearly 10 years trying to get them out of my garden - they are a weed and a pest in New Zealand.
Batman the contrast in yours is brilliant and Jersey girl your bright, original background colour gives the painting a very modern look.

You must feel sooooo good about being caught up with the lessons. It's quite an accomplishment, you've been working at in consistently.  I can see that your painting has really improved over time.   :congrats:

Karen, if these are weeds, I wish we had a few of them here in the northern hemisphere.  When I was younger, we used to have lots of flowers.  One spring, I was wondering what in the world those things were coming up in the front bed right where I could see it from the front window.  I had never seen anything like that before.  Well it just kept coming and eventually, it was a Calla Lily!  It was a sight to behold.  Hubby had planted the bulbs to surprise me.

Somewhere I have a photo, will have to go searching for it.  It didn't come up the next year.  Our winters are too harsh.  I should have dug up the bulbs and stored them 'til spring.   :'(

Here's my first one...sure am going do another.  My paper dried so quickly and I couldn't lift out some of the shading. Weatherman sez it's gonna cool down in the next couple of days, so will get a better shot at it.

Title: Re: LESSON #31 - Arum Lilies
Post by: ImBatman on August 18, 2012, 04:37:29 PM
Very nice Tousabella.

I don't know that you really need to lift any shading out. I think what could enhance (and maybe disperse any issues you have with shading at the moment) is to knock a bit more of the brightness of the yellow of the petals on the right hand side of each flower where it goes down and meets the stem. If you look at the video. Dennis gives significant shadowing round the right hand side - since the light is coming from the left.

It's just my opinion of course, but I think that's all you could do to improve the flowers - and they are the important part aren't they? I like the look you have achieved of the flowers against a field in the background though. Almost like it is a close up of some flowers in the window and in the background is the field and sky outside.

Here's my first one...sure am going do another.  My paper dried so quickly and I couldn't lift out some of the shading. Weatherman sez it's gonna cool down in the next couple of days, so will get a better shot at it.

I painted the arum lilies for lesson 31 today.

I was amazed that the initial light yellow wash made the flowers really look much whiter than leaving the white of the paper.

Dennis, I am so pleased to have learned this.

You are so  :smart: !   :flowers:

:thankyou: so much, each one, C., Dianne, Nina, Rita and Pat.

Dennis really knows what he's talking about.  I've learned so much from him.  There's always something new I catch onto with each exercise.

This time it was the fact that a a very light cadmium yellow wash on something can make things look whiter than leaving the white of the paper.

It does make sense when it comes right down to it and   :yippee:  it's a technique that can be in lots of other compositions.

 :thankyou: Dennis

Dennis, you said
Quote
Life is not always what it seems to be.
.  How true.  We can create lots of illusion in our artwork.   :2funny:

And Dennis, I was -ing.  Yellow is a complementary color to the blue background.  Perhaps that's why it works so well to make the lilies pop and show as white against the blue background?

So if you want to make white flowers look extra white and you use a yellowish background, would you do a light wash with a blue on the flowers ( or whatever) to accomplish the same thing?

I'll be taking a 3 weekend art theory course in Oct., Nov. at the college.  I need all the help I can get when it comes to color theory.  It seems things take longer these days to sink into the grey matter and I thought a different approach to the subject would help.  I'm hoping anyway.

Next lesson is hibiscus.  We have them in bloom here, white ones mauve ones and pink double ones.

I'm thinking of watching the replay and studying the pdf when it comes in, then instead of painting the next lesson exactly like Dennis has his flower, I might make up my own composition from my photos and painting that.

I'll do some sketches today.

Oooooh my! What can I say about this one!  ??? A whole lot if I had more space than this little box!!!! I had trouble with my background color mix seperating when I put it on the paper. It gave it a multi-colored/splotchie/chalkie(enough adjectives?) look!  Started to begin a new one, but the uncertainty usually happens when I first start, so I decided to keep going!... I should have :surrender: , because it only got worse! I wasn't watching Dennis carefully enough and I went crazy planting grass!!! Or weeds or whatever that stuff is suppose to be!!! I filled half the paper with it before I realized it!!!!  :pullhair: Oh well, I think this painting is one I need to try again!

Not only that, it looks pretty familiar.   :2funny:

I had to laugh when you said you weren't listening to Dennis and painted the background grasses right across the paper.  I did the very same thing!   See where I lifted out on the bottom corners?   :2funny:

Good thing there's a forward and stop button on the video.  I use it frequently and when I have it stalled, sometimes my hubby hears me say, "Dennis, Dennis, Dennis!"

How you do the class in 2 hrs, Dennis and how those folks do paint alongs and have them coming out so nice is really beyond me.   :envy:

Lillian, I just can't imagine being able to paint along!!! It takes me half a day to get one of these finished.  I am pushing stop, rewind, play... repeat the last three steps! ;D  Of course, it doesn't help I can't practice very often.  I have painted 2 paintings in the last 4 months! You have painted...hmmm, how to say it...must be tactful... a bloody marvelous painting   :heeha:  the lilies are lovely, yes the grass may be in need of a trim...and the background looks fine. In fact on the right hand side by the top of the flower I can see an outline that looks like a butterfly behind the flower.

The lesson was not about the "grass" but about the lilies themselves. If you do the lilies well, which you have done, then the rest does not matter to me at all. It is easy to change the background if you really want to.

Just retape the edges with masking tape and then scrub them out by lightening them and softening all the edges.

C. - I don't think you have to say a word...I will!  It is BEAUTIFUL!!!  I don't know how you got the flowers so crisp looking and I think your background is just wonderful!  The only reason I'd be painting this one over would be if you just simply enjoyed it because I think it's a painting to be proud of...just lovely!

 :thankyou: Val.

About the background - after making the last one (Cosmos) dark, I tried to make this one lighter!   :2funny: But, yes, I think if it was a bit darker around the flowers they would "pop" more.  Next time!!  I'd probably mess this one up trying to  "fix" it!

I will do another one, because I love Arums (Calla Lilies).  We had them and Bird-of-Paradise all across the front of my childhood home, so they bring back good memories.  Calla Lillies were probably the first flowers I started drawing as a child.  They just are so simply elegant.

Thanks for the nice words, Mary and Natalie. :1hug:  I did have fun with this one.

I've always been intimidated by watercolors, but I think I should have tried them sooner, because I really love working with them!  I like that I can do 5 or 10 minutes, then make breakfast, get my granddaughter off to school, come home, do a little more, and so goes my day!  I even get up at night and work for 30 minutes or so, then go back to bed!  It's so easy to just start and stop, no clean-up hassles like with oils!  Maybe if I'd tried them sooner, it wouldn't have taken me 40+ years to pick up painting again!!

Thank-you EVERYONE for the kind words and encouragement.  :thankyou: :thankyou: :thankyou:

Rita - yes, I'm new to watercolors, they have always scared me because I'd heard they were hard to do.  Many years ago (45?) I painted in Oils.   After I got busy with family and career I just didn't have the time for painting.  So, when I wanted to start again I decided to give watercolors a try, and WOW, I was hooked!  I wish I had started many years ago!  This Spring I dabbled a bit with a kids pan set of watercolors (disappointing!), and then bought some Daniel Smith tubes and some good brushes that they recommended.  That made all the difference for me, because I could actually get saturated colors.  I started pokng around on the internet for information and tutorials, found Paint Basket and jumped in with both feet!  The Cosmos painting was the first real watercolor painting I did, except for the little sketches I had tried before I found paint basket. I'll post some of those dismal attempts in the gallery - to show my "before & after" work!  Dennis makes it so easy to follow and learn.  I am really excited about learning more as I take all these classes!

I'm also doing the drawing class, and between the two and the rest of my life, it's going slowly.  I joined the Watercolor Club, and have only got the Cosmos done, because I jumped ahead to the live classes becasue I love flowers!  So, I'm plodding along slowly!

We're having some unusual summer-like weather, breaking records for this late in the year.  Tomorrow it's supposed to turn to Fall weather, and maybe even some rain.  The cold is hard for me as well, makes me hurt more, but maybe the painting will take my mind of it!  And, if I do lots of flowers, I can pretend it's summer, at least in my studio!

Again, thanks everyone the your comments and support.  Today I started on the Hibiscus, and I'm watching the live Daffodils class tomorrow!  I'll see some of you there!

-Pat

Wow Pat.  Sorry I hadn't seen this painting.  Having trouble keeping up with everyone.  Your painting is stunning.  I too can't believe you are new to watercolor.  I would have made one big globby, muddly mess of it, what with purple and green on the same sheet.  Yours are lovely.  Hope you are hanging them somewhere in your house to enjoy.

Thanks much Natalie. The colours aren't showing very well here. The wash is actually a sort of blue granular/purple colour (if that makes sense), the grasses at the bottom are a dark purple and dark green. I had such a hard time making the dark green I was determined to use it somewhere!  ;D

These are one of my favorite flowers.  We had them in front of our house when I was growing up, and they were one of the first flowers I drew as a child.  They are so elegant.  I'm painting a Calla (Arum) Lily watercolor for my son for Christmas because he loved the one I did for class.  I searched through tons of photos of Calla LIlies, and then drew my own take on them, making a bouquet of three, but not like the one we did in class - to make sure I wasn't infringing on PB's copyright.  I just finished transferring my sketch onto watercolor paper, and can hardly wait to start painting!  I've also done a couple of small postcard size paintings, one only had one flower, and one had two flowers.  I made thank-you cards with them, but forgot to take a picture before I sent them out  :(   At least if I forget to take a photo of the one I'm doing for my son, I'll be able get it back for a day or so!   ::)

Now I have to figure out what I'm going to paint for my daughter - can't give to one without giving to the other!! :2funny:

Oh Val I really like this painting, beautiful.  Like the others, I especially like the colors and the way you brought the background color into the lily--pulls it together nicely. I am impressed that with the holidays, people are finding time for painting---I am always way too frenzied this time of year even though I promise myself I won't do it again.  Thanks for sharing your lovely painting

I meant to take another picture yesterday in better light but forgot.....cruiseheimer's!  :D

I'm still fighting with the blending, Dennis puts some paint down, runs his damp brush down the side...and voila! Lovely blended shading. I won't go into detail, so let's just say mine does not follow suit! I seem to be lacking on the voila!  ;D

Thank you for your lovely comment....on to the Hibiscus.  :fight:

Thank you so much Lynn. I still have a terrible habit of not making enough background colour...so I made sure with this one. I completely filled one of my wells! I had enough to float a battle ship!  :2funny: I hated wasting the paint, but at least I didn't run out...so I figure I'm half way there.
Christmas will be a bit different for us this year. Most of our dearest friends are back in the east Caribbean, we usually have 15-20 people aboard for potluck dinner. I do the turkey and trifle, and everyone brings a dish of some kind. I usually make stockings for everyone. This year, most of the folks (cruising) we met here are flying home for the holidays (mostly US). There are a couple of people staying so hopefully we'll get together at some point. Going to be quiet, that's for sure. Putting together some gifts for the kids at the orphanage here, so that and painting is keeping me occupied.

I agree with Val - the stems should be slightly green and the bottom of the middle flower must have a slightly orange tinge as part of the flower itself. That will round off the painting perfectly.

Much better Denise.     Notice how you've now given the flower stems more dimension, they don't look flat anymore. You have some nice rounding on the flowers.  O0

I know I held my breath when I put in the shadings  :faint:    ....I'm still a bit of a coward with the darks..  :eyesclosed: Funny how it all turns out in the end!  ;D

Well done.  O0

:thankyou: Dennis, thank you again. Yeay ;D , now it's on to the Hibiscus...

Sarah, my own composition? I know, I thought about it, as I do after each painting, but I'm such a chicken. I usually divert myself by just starting the next lesson ::) I've gotten pretty good at that :P .
I'm almost done with my club series though, so that will be a perfect time to do my own stuff. Will of course, still use Dennis' replays for guidance and company :)
Regarding the stems and shading, It took just a few minutes and I like the results, it seems to warm things up a bit...

 :thankyou: Natalie :thankyou:

Val, I thought I was ok with doing darks, but I did hold back on these lillies. They look so delicate I didn't want to mess it up and ended up going too minimal on the shadings. Sooo, thanks to you and Dennis, you didn't let me get away with it ;D

 :thankyou: Dianne :thankyou:

Mary Lou, thanks for your comments :) I enjoyed doing the blending for these flowers. Plus, it's a nice change from rocks and water! :D Which I will go back to after the flower series...

Though i would do my own version, free hand and an abstract background along with a ladybug and water drops.  I hope my shading is correct.  Your comments are welcome.  Note to see it upright you have to click on it, i don't know why it appears like that.

This is really lovely Danielle, I love the colors and the flowers are beautifully done. Just one little distraction for me is too many droplets in a row on the central flower.

Danielle,

The lilies themselves are really lovely - beautifully done.  The ladybug is a cute addition, but the waterdrops are distracting (too many).

Love the background.

Really beautiful Arums and background      I just find the waterdrops too centralized on only one arum and too regimented - they must be more unevenly spread around

Kay, Excellent Arum Lilies      The veins in the leaves are a bit too thick and "hard" and should be toned down quite a bit to improve the painting as a whole O0

Used more lighting when taking this picture but the bulbs are daylight bulbs and they cast a blue hue.  Hope some sunshine heads this way soon.  Winter in Texas is way to early.

I thought I posted this to the right Lesson, but, when I went to look for it, it wasn't there! ;D ;D ;D
It may pop up anywhere! I'm going to try again, hopefully, this time it will work

It's really difficult to get the right colors from a photo, even when I fool around with the scanner and Digital Image Pro. This is the best I can do. The dark grasses don't stand out so much in the real painting. I made the lilies pink because it is my daughters favorite color and I was planning on giving it to her. I think I lost too many whites at the edges of the flowers, especially the smaller, center one. What do you think?

Beautiful colors!  Except for the middle lily looking a bit squished, I think it's wonderfully done.  The top two lilies look exquisite to me.

I'm sure your daughter will treasure it.

Sue, a very lovely painting
The problem with the center arum lily is that the left edge lines up alonside the left one instead of really overlapping it. This "lining up" makes it look part of the left lily.
Also darken up the background next to the middle lily's stem as it blends in too much to the background. Fix these up and you will have a  painting.

Sherri,

Lovely lilies.  So pretty.

Just curious, the bottom veins on your beautiful leaves face down, but they face up at the top of the leaves.  Is that how they are in real life.  Never saw a leaf like that before - but I don't get around much!

Nice work!

Here are my Arum Lilies, minus the white pollen.

I have a question, what is Chinese white?  Is it just a tube of WC paint like the others I bought, or something special.  I thought there were "no white" in WC... just preserved paper.

Title: Re: LESSON #31 - Arum Lilies
Post by: Val on January 15, 2017, 11:46:08 PM
:heeha: This is gorgeous Annie! Chinese white is a tube just like your other w/c. If you add it on right from the tube it is quite opaque....but sometimes you may have to repeat the process to make it stand out. I have found that it works best if you add it after the painting is dry. Otherwise it tends to melt/blend in with the painting. But, that's just me.  :crazy2:

Thank you Kathy.  Give me a chance to catch up with you, while on vacation.   I don't do the classes in the order they were released, but in the order of difficulties.  So I am going through the Level 1 at this time.  I don't know if this is wise, but it is less likely to frustrate me with more advanced techniques.

When is the big move?  Lots of work I am sure.

Thank you so much Kathy, you comment warmed my heart.  :thankyou:

Those lilies are what I feel was the nicest WC painting class I did.   I have ordered some Chinese white to do the pollen, along with a bunch of art supply, which I will pick up in the US next week... it is so much cheaper that way.

I will use the Chinese withe to finish it.  But this is my favorite painting of all.
