I tried the painting from memory using some local shells. i haven't put the little final spot spray on the foam yet - I'll wait for the replay. It was fun to do but I'm glad I put the spots on outside! It is very nerve wracking painting the foam over the shells and next time I will put in some thinner foam lines too.
-
You did an amazing job Karen
love the shells.

-
Well Karen another nice painting. I like it. O0 O0
NIna :flowers:

Karen, very nice work! You really have movement in that foam and it really stands out in true 3D form.

-
:congrats: Karen that looks great! Love it :smitten:
-
Karen, I love all your paintings. You are not only a very good painter but also very productive. I admire what you do. :congrats:

Do you ever find you're running out of really good descriptive words? ??? :2funny:
Karen you have done an exceptional job thus far. The sand looks very realistic. Banner work on the shell, having the little spots of colour peeking through the foam, and the bubbles in the foam.............

-
Do you ever find you're running out of really good descriptive words?
Yes, Val, I do! It begins to sound redundant and mundane, doesn't it?
Perhaps we should develop a dictionary of 'Praise Phrases'. :)
-
I agree! It does become difficult to praise someone's work without making them feel like, "Oh, she says that to everyone!". ???
Karen, I am always impressed by the quality of your work! This one is no exception! Wonderful!
-
hi Karen, another great job!
-
:heeha: Karen... wow... you have truly done a fantastic job on this painting!!! Lovely colours and depth I think ;) ...and that sand is very realistic too    well done O0
-
excellent, Karen
-
absolutely beautiful Karen :yippee: :cloud9:
-
Thanks Nolan, I liked the challenge of this painting - I'm trying to take your lessons and apply them but I don't always make it work - I can't manage your detail and colour yet - but I'm hoping one day .......
Thank you everyone - There are some lovely comments here and I'm looking forward to seeing all your seashell paintings.
It is true it is hard to find the words sometimes but I'm amazed at how positive everyone manages to be and how nice. The encouragement does help you keep going when you get frustrated because what you had in mind doesn't actually make it to the canvas. I love it when people help me see the bits I've missed and let me know what works.
I also love seeing other people's interpretations and watching their painting getting better and better. It's part of Paintbasket addiction.
-
I think you do a marvelous job with the classes Karen.
As far as the detail is concerned - it all depends on the amount of time you spend working on that detail, refining edges and adding those extra little details. I tend to like detailed paintings, but it all takes time and careful observation (and that comes with practice)
-
And that's about the size of it...!
Complete with surgically excised shell...and very poor lighting...the "wet" sand really is much darker but I'm as good with the camera as I am with computers!
-
Fa-antastic!! O0 Way to go Mary.
I still haven't got the software loaded properly! :D Think I'm just gonna draw/paint for a bit...... ;D
-
Well, Val, if anyone knows the sea, it would be you so maybe they WERE seashells after all! Thank you!
What software are you having a problem with...you know, I'm a computer wizard...maybe I can help! :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:
-
The software is a Photoshop program. Not even sure of the version as yet. Will have to sit down, stick the disc in, listen to the whirlygigs, watch the screen flash....and that's where my expertise ends! I'm actually hoping it's a self-loader.
-
Oh, THAT software...I put away the scissors and glue...now I have the knife! :2funny:
-
Wat to go, Mary. It looks great!
-
Thank you so much, C.! :flowers:
-
Wow! Mary, your painting looks great! It's a pity about the lighting though. I'd love to have seen it in natural light. You've done a great rendition of this.
-
Karen! what a great rendition of this painting you have done! I'm well impressed
-
Goood looking shells and foam Mary.
-
Mary, I'm afraid to admit that I'm confused here. :uglystupid2:
Is this your painting? Or is this your practice with the photo editing?
Either way, you've done a fantastic job.
-
:hammer: Thought I'd start out with the meat tenderizer....work my way up to the knife drawer.......

Goood looking shells and foam Mary.
Karen - thank you - it was a challenge for sure...I can't believe how you were able to paint along...just amazing! :thankyou:

Val! I didn't know exacto made meat tenderizer...the things you learn every day! :2funny:
-
I can see the photo doesn't do the painting justice, you have done a great job with this painting Mary
The sea sand effect and the foam and the shells, etc., are all very well executed.
Next time though leave yourself a bit more room between the foam and it's shadow. That will show more height in the water O0 What you can do now is to extend the existing shadows by fading them out slower. That will have the same effect O0
-
:2funny: :2funny: :surrender: :2funny: :2funny:
Ok Mary, now you really have to paint this!
-
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Val....Nolan didn't notice I photoshopped it!!!
-
:2funny: :2funny: :2funny:

Think something is wrong with the foam all advice is apreciated
just klick on link for picture.

-
I think you did an awesome job, Mel...particularly your stones...I struggled a great deal with them but yours look as real as could be...maybe all you need for the foam is the little white wispy bits but I caution you...do NOT go by me...lol...I think you did great!
-
:thankyou: actually the stones were the most difficulty part for me.
I just did see they look much better in photo then in real :-\ .
I maby give the white whispy a chanse but only little.
Mel
-
Mel I give you kudos for doing this. I haven't done it yet. As far as I can see it does not look bad. Maybe the foam is to thick, or there needs to be more distance between the foam and shadow. Wait and see what Nolan says.
Give yourself a pat on the back. It will get better. O0 O0
Nina :flowers:
-
Thank you Nina! i have to agree on the foam think it is to much and to bright i think.
waiting for Nolan to say what he thinks.
Mel
-
Great job Mel, love the sand texture and the shells and stones.
What is bothering you about the foam is not the amount, you do get times when there is a lot of foam, what is bothering is that there are none of the small fly out bits of foam, at the moment you have the large areas sorted, so just add the smaller bits in and it will look natural O0
-
Now you have advice from the expert, Mel.
It's very nice, now you can make it the perfect painting! :congrats:
-
:)good class, but can you give me the color mix for wet sand.
-
I do mention the mixes in the class and in the pdf, but if I recall correctly it was combinations of Yellow Ochre, Raw Umber and white, possibly some orange in there too?
-
Hooray have at last finished my painting , it sat on a easel in a corner for a while as i had other ones i needed to do.I used oil paints and the canvas is a boxed canvas 12x14.Even painted around the edges.
-
Very well done
-
very nice
-
Oh My--That looks so totally real. I love it and I'll bet it looks great on the wrapped canvas.
-
superb job Helenty :heeha:  :yippee:
All suggestion I have is to darken the shadow cast by the bottom right shell onto the stone. That will add height to the shell O0
-
:thankyou: to Lynn,Bhavna,Maryna and Nolan, will do that shadow work on the shell as you suggested Nolan.
-
Super job Helenty    I miss beachcombing.
-
:thankyou: Val.I wish i was close to the ocean as we are over 100klm away from the beaches.
-
No beaches here...but if I go outside I can sometimes hear the waves crashing on Lake Ontario. A short walk will get me to the marshes and bluffs along the shoreline. Much too cold of late :cold: Your shell at water's edge takes me back to my lovely Caribbean beaches.. heavy sigh.. soon........
-
:twothumbs: :twothumbs: Looks AMAZING Helenty, its very realistic
-
looks great, am about to begin mine. i have a question?where or how do i get the true size of the shells from. i am wanting to paint it on the same size as the lesson. there is not a traceable size in the reference material. or do i just free hand draw it onto the canvas :)
-
HERE (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/index.php?topic=2859.0)is a great tut on how to tile pages to create a printable template. HERE (http://paintbasket.com/studios/?p=469)is a lesson on how to redraw using the grid O0

hi nolan
oh i have spent hours today trying to get the templates enlarged, which i did succeed at!!! what i did was enlarge each photo to a5 size so they could fit onto my a3 canvas, so i was very excited until i looked at it and realized the shapes r all wrong. question: do i have to pick out the shells only and enlarge them till they fit the right placement size?. i am starting to think i might just freehand draw them onto canvas ???

hi pb friends , this is my seashells so far!!. would like some feedback on water colour!! i am thinking it has too much paynes grey, just does not look right to me. would like some feedback before i continue. and any other area,s that i could work on. many thanks :-\ :-\ :-\
-
:thankyou: germa !!i am still trying to get my posting right :2funny: still getting used to all this forum stuff ::)

Doesn't matter, we're here to help each other, aren't we?
When you go to your albums, under every painting there is something like [smg id=xxxx].
When you paste it in a topic, you get this thumbnail.
Could be you already knew and just forgot, concentrating on other things while posting your topic, i know i would/could. ;D
-
hi pb friends i am painting my seashells in oil and was wondering if anyone could tell me how to do the glazing. ???
-
so true silly me ::) ::) ::)

I started working on Sea Shells On Beach lesson . Any Comments or suggestion are welcome :)

Coming along famously Bhavna. Very nice colourings. O0

Looks great to me Bhavna!

looks good to me too bhavna

:thankyou: Val
:thankyou: Germa
:thankyou: Jennylynn
-
Looks good to me, Bhavna.. I think I bought that lesson, but haven't done it yet. Love any thing "Sea".....
-
looks great Bhavna
The shadow you have added to the large bottom right hand shell makes it look as though it is worn out and has a hole now, which although different from the original, work well and adds extra character to the painting. I also like that you were no scared to add a few shells of your own :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
-
is that the glazing of the shadings on the main shell Brony?
-
this painting is going to look awesome when it is complete, you are doing a great job Brony :heeha: :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
-
thanks nolan. Q. i have purchased the glazing lessons and watched them. can i use my opache oil paint to do the shell glazing or do i have to purchase transluent paint. from what i see i think i can.
-
also do u think my wet water is too grey or blueish?.
-
yes nolan it is
-
Thanks Nolan i will try to finish this ASAP :flowers: . :)
Thanks Dianne :flowers:
-
I do show how to do it in the class, but you will basically need to wait until the shell is dry, then use a neutral black (mixed with the 3 primaries) to dry brush the shading onto the shell O0
-
I don't bother about whether the colour is opaque or transparent - the layer you put down to get the shell shading is so thin that the colour becomes transparent O0
I am happy with your water colour as it will depend / change with the light
-
:thankyou: nolan ,am looking forward to the finishing touches!!
-
:thankyou: :thankyou: i feel ready now to finish my shell
-
Oooooou this looks great!
-
Well I finished it long back but didn't got time take picture. Here is my sea shell on beach :)
-
   Wow Bhavna, your sea shells on beach is FANTASTIC. I don't often look around the oil section because I do watercolor but saw it in the gallery and had to have a look. It is excellent and the foam is so well done. I have always wondered about how one can paint sea foam and you have done a splendid job. Patricia
-
Awesome job, Bhavna! I especially love your shells - I see ones with holes in them all the time and I think you captured it beautifully!
-
Bhavna,
Wonderful job on the seashells and sea foam.
My only suggestion would be to make the seafoam come onto the beach not in such a straight line. That big shell under the foam would have caused the water to ripple there, causing it to flow around it somewhat, I think.
Your success makes me want to try something similar.

This took me 4 hours now for the shells.
-
Well Zilpa you have a good foundation started. O0 O0
Nina :flowers:
-
Well, since I thought this was a reference photo of sand, for your painting, I can say nothing else but: well done, what a patience you've got!!!
-
Hi Zilpa, great job. I haven't done this one. Did you use a toothbrush to spray in the spots?
-
Blow me! That is awesome Zilpa. :heeha: Can't wait to see the rest. O0
-
:gl: with the shells Zilpa
-
:thankyou: Nina, Germa, Lyn, Val and Nolan. Lyn I used mostly a similar brush as Nolan did but for the real fine sand I went out and bought a denture toothbrush as I liked the bristles. I seemed to have more control with that. Mind you I did have to wipe the wall down afterwards. :2funny: I used the colours at random so I did not do them in layers. :painting:
-
Love the shells, well done.

Acrylic on canvas 50.8x60.9cm.

Looking good Zilpa.... you still have me floored with the sand! :heeha: Well done.

Thanks Val, I know it was probably overkill, but I think it was worth it. :painting:

Very nice, Zilpa!

I agree that you have created an amazing painting Zilpa. I especially like the realism in the submerged shell area, well done

:thankyou: Nolan, I really enjoyed doing this one. I am doing another today to go with it. :painting:

hi all my pb. friends, i have finally finished my seashells. not sure if i am pleased with it.

:heeha: Look at that sand..and those shells! About as real as one can get! O0
I love the look of the foam...must find out how you do that. Wonder how I'd get that effect in w/c?

Awesome work Zilpa

   looks so amazing. u have now encouraged me to do another seashell in my own composition :thankyou: :thankyou: :thankyou: just love it!!!!
-
:thankyou: Val, Bhavna and Brony. I tend to try doing most of the tutorials using my own photos or ideas so that if they work out well I can show them without having to worry about copyright etc. :painting:
-
Thanks Harwant and Brony for lovely comments
-
:gl: with the next one

well done Brony, I also think you have done a marvelous job, the details are amazing
I especially like the sunken shell :yippee:

Thanks Nolan. :painting:

Hi
I was wondering if the same splattering principle can be applied to a sandy beach thats further away not so close up (i.e., thicker paint = smaller grains of sand) if I am painting a painting with sand thats further away can I get the same sand effect using the splattering technique and maybe just use three tonal values instead of five or six? Any suggestions appreciated. :)
-
Katie
I guess it depends on the distance you are indicating in your painting.
If the distance top to bottom of the painting indicates a couple of metres on the beach, then detail would be fine, but the further the distance you are showing (ie say 500 metres down the beach) then the detail isn't necessary.
Batman.
-
:thankyou:
-
you bet, I do it all the time. Just remember also the to adjust the size of the splatter to compensate for the distance - smaller splatter the further away etc. otherwise you end up with huge round rocks in the distance ;D
-
Hi there
When painting foam onto wet sand on the beach but its not close up like the seashell painting instead, the sand is say 20-50-100mtres away
A/ do I use the same foam brushing technique as close up?
B/ What size brush at this distance?
C/ Do I still paint in a shadow line first even at this distance or should I just add some shadows after?
:thankyou:
-
at that distance, all you will see is pretty flat colour and no detail
you can still paint the shadow first, I find it easier to do that. then look for the leading edge of the foam, it will be slightly darker than the main (top / flat) body of foam. That shows the height of the foam.
If you are painting flat foam that is just lying on the beach (not rolling in) then it won't have a leading edge, so just drag it in with a bristle brush
The brush size will depend on the area you need to cover and the size of the canvas.
-
Thank you Nolan :)
-
Hi there
My speckled sand (small speckles done with a toothbrush) is about 20-50 metres away (perspective is slightly looking down onto the beach) - it is looking too clean.
Any suggestions appreciated
thank you!
-
If you post the picture for us to see it would help. ;)
-
Thanks Val, I will try and get it posted
I'm practicing my tones by painting a monochromatic painting.
Not long after my post, I reversed the clean lines in the foam and brightness of my sand probably by going too far the other way now- ::)
Also I probably shouldnt be trying to do this at night under the wrong light..
-
Any input on the following would be much appreciated, not sure where to post this for some help - I have not painted my focal point in yet which will be on the right hand side
Any input appreciated
some improvements (hopefully) - darker sand/foam shadow
-
it's beautiful Katie, add the focal point in :heeha:
-
Katie, I totally agree with Nolan. Beautiful. O0 O0 O0
Nina :flowers:
-
Brony, I saw this, thought you did a great job. O0 O0
Nina :flowers:
-
ok. Thank you. I'm unsure whether the sea (behind the foam and near horizen) is finished or not regarding reflections?
My idea is to do an overhanging pohutakawa tree using a textured gel and colouring the foliage with green and red.
I'm hoping its going to go ok.
-
:yippee: :cheering: :cheering: :cheering: You can do it!
-
Looks good, Brony!
-
-
 I really love this Katie. I did reply in your other discussion with your first attempt but something went wrong and my reply went missing along with your photo
I still can't see either but don't know if anyone else can lol
I love the way the water looks like it is running over the shells in the surf and the bit of sand in the broken shell is great.
Lisa :-)
-
Hi Lisa
Yes I saw your reply thank you! The foam line was too clean so I promptly deleted the pic, worked on the foam line to scrub it up a bit and reposted again!
-
:2funny: ok I keep leaving mine up so people can hopefully see an improvement after feedback
-
haha oh I got feedback, hence the quick removal  ! Your pencil drawings are awesome by the way. I love the detail
-
:thankyou: I am loving this. I am hoping my oils arrive on Monday and then I can start painting as well. I have always wanted to extend my artistic ability and this site is awesome :smitten: with it. :cheering: :cheering:
-
Very nice, Katiew!
-
Nice to see the painting up on the wall already Katie :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
The shadows of the foam really adds nice height to the foam doesn't it, well done
-
Hi Nolan,
I put it on the wall just to take a photo of it to post in here....so is yet to be hung up :)
That painting was my second attempt at that scene - I painted my first one and completely destroyed it when I painted the foam over it - :'( it was awful.
So I started all over again (after feeling like giving up !) then took your advice in the tutorial about foam practice, so when I got to the foam bit I practised on a seperate canvas until I felt slightly more confident.
I feel I learnt so much in this tutorial but I found it really challenging....Is this generally quite a hard painting to do??
Katie
-
Very nice, Katiew!
Thank you Pollywag
-
it is not a beginner painting, but clearly you are not a beginner anymore by looking at the results ;D
-
Beautiful job Katie.
-
Hope it's still ok to post here. Here is my Seashells on the beach painting. With all the layers this painting took quite a long time to finish, but I enjoyed the lesson all the same. :coffee:
Nolan, you might want to look at your PDF file for this lesson, as your photos would only print smaller than A4 size, hence this is hand drawn in case it looks different!! :2funny: :2funny:

Ms. Fig,

Well Done Fiona.

Really good job on your painting Fiona.

:thankyou: Zilpa and Brian, much appreciated!

My almost finished seashells... still need to do the splatter on the foam
-
And need to shadow my bubbles ....

   Very well done Tracey, I find foam very difficult to do and I think you have done a super job.
Patricia
-
Looking good Tracey O0
I'm going to have to see if there are any lessons in w/c with sea foam.
-
Tracey,
Nice work. You did well on this.
I've always wanted to do this one but the sea foam looked too hard. Maybe I'll give it a try.

great job
add a shadow to the small stone as well while you are at it O0

Great painting Tracy

Yay that looks great

:thankyou:

Karen: I love your painting. The foam on the water is great. Nice work. Kathy
-
Since I’m leaving for PV in 2 weeks, I thought I’d paint this for our condo down there! It’s only 8x10 since that’s easy to travel with. If it we’re larger I could have done those bubbles inside of the shell. Just couldn’t control my brush enough for that tiny space. Anyway, hopefully it will be dry by the time I leave!! Any changes suggested???
-
Sharon: Nice painting.
-
Thanks Kathy! It was fun to paint!!
-
Sharon,
I always make a practice when I start to go back and view what everyone else has done - and, most importantly, the suggestions made.
Here's one from Nolan: Next time though leave yourself a bit more room between the foam and its shadow. That will show more height in the water. What you can do now is to extend the existing shadows by fading them out slower. That will have the same effect
And, he made a suggestion to show more shadow for the bigger shell on the far right, to give it more height above the sand.
Hope those help. Although with a small painting, it is more difficult.
You did a good job. Sea foam is not easy.
-
Thanks Mea. I think when I do this again I’ll use a larger canvas to allow me to do the things with the shadows like you wrote and to create those bubbles too
-
Looks good, Sharon! I love the sand.
-
It will look great in your condo Sharon :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
Just the bottom left hand stone's edge seems a bit rough? Just check that for me O0
-
:thankyou: EmmaLee and Nolan
I’ve tried to soften that stone, Nolan. Hope this is better!!
-
yes it has a sharp edge now O0
-
That’s looking great Sharon
-
Thanks Nolan and Neil!! Glad I was able to make the tweak so easily!
-
Looks good!
-
Thanks, Val! Can't wait to get back to Mismaloya and take photos of similar scenes for a future painting!!
-
It looks good Sharon. I always find small paintings harder to do than large.

Thanks Zilpa. And since these are practice pieces I figure it’s better to use small canvas which are easier to store or give away. But I will try a larger canvas soon!!

Great job Sharon... This is another lesson Ill have to try... I haven't found this one yet. Always wanted to paint shells on the beach. I've been collecting reference photos on this subject for years... Don't know why I didn't think to check PB's Online classes for inspiration :idiot2:

Thanks, Linley - I think the beach is beckoning you!

I loved doing this one! :smitten: I collect shells (and fossils) and used one of my collection to add to the scene.
No doubt that I will make a huge strip of beach using this as inspiration now that I've learned the techniques ... it'll look wonderfully holiday-like... And hearing the story in the video I'm now determined to visit NZ one day! :)
On the photo - at least on my computer - the colour comes out a bit more red than it is in reality.

Excellent. You have caught the depth of the water

I love your shells and the shadows in the water are great.

Beautiful job! Looks real!

You have done a great job with this painting :yippee: :yippee: :yippee: I really like how nice and shiny your stone is too :heeha:
Please do more of your own version using your own shells and fossils, that would look awesome :gl:
