Title: 24 - Snowy Mountain Retreat
Post by: Rkymtnmary on September 25, 2012, 07:12:44 PM
Nolan...the issues here are too numerous to list but I'm hoping you can tell me where I've gone awry...my foreground came out not like yours and so I tried to add a fence in a way that makes sense but that sure didn't happen...it's very wet so I'm stopping before I tackle the other two patchwork quilts as I'm just not sure it's redeemable at this point.  Incorrigible I'm afraid!   :2funny:

Don't we get to see?   ;)   You can't see me, but I'm asking very nicely and batting my eyes.   ::)

oooo Val...I don't dare post it again... :2funny:  I must have forgotten to put the photo here but it must have gotten to my gallery because Nolan commented on it at the beginning of the lesson because I happened to mention I'd posted it in progress because because because because because.....and you know the rest!  I'm on mountain 3 as we speak and you're going to cry laughing when you see this...it's gone from bad to worse and now, I'm just sitting here dabbing and dashing with zero rhyme or reason...this could be my best tour de force yet!  I have abandoned all hope of redemption and this one is definitely a Mary classic!  Sanity begone!!   :2funny:

Ok Mary, I just went to your gallery and I saw your unfinished mountain painting.  It's just that, unfinished!  You're doing great!  Go ahead, put those other mountains in and you'll see, it's going to look great!

I think you're doing fantastic.

And that painting of the koi!  Well!  If that's not beautiful, my name is Mary!

I love what you're doing, keep going!  :painting: :painting: :painting:   :1hug:

Mary--Are you talking about the "Gone astray" painting in your gallery.  Please finish it.  I mean this honestly--I saw that painting in the gallery and really loved it as it stood out in a good way.  There is something about the style in which it is painted that really stands out O0

Oh, Lillian...you have radar when I'm in the midst of a meltdown!  I couldn't even post THAT one...all I could see was a couple of fish playing darts who kept missing the bulls' eye!  You just can't believe how the one in progress has broken down...there was a spring thaw or something on the last mountain or a crew came in and starting sand blasting it...I just don't know what occurred but I do know it was a baddddd thing!  The best I can hope for is that a genie will come by tonight and wipe the second two clean and I can start all over again!  But here's the good news...I have put down my brushes for the night!  I'm sure the others in the house are wondering what in the world I'm laughing at all. by. myself!  I'm done!  :2funny:

Yes, Lynn...Gone astray would be the one   :2funny:.  And it's gone much further than astray right now without even trying!  I do know now that the last mountain has become a ski slope that had some skiers on it with very dirty skis and as soon as I catch them, I'm going to forbid their access to the mountain!  But thank you so much for your sweet encouragement.  I really do appreciate it and I promise I'm going to attempt to fix what is very broken right now tomorrow!    :1hug:

:1hug: Lillian...and thank you.  I wasn't even going to post it because in my eyes, it's horrible...I don't think it looks anything like it's supposed to but it's so far beyond and it's not like you can say, oh, well go to crevasse #25 an lighten it up.  I just can't get the hang of mountains and I'm thinking I need to take a little hiatus...I see more steps backwards than forward and this one's a great example of it.  It looks even worse in person.  I feel very frustrated and discouraged.  I can't practice any more than I already do...maybe I just need to stop for a while and just do the drawing course.  I'm going to give it all a lot of thought in the next few days and see what I come up with.   :( today.

Mary--Seriously--This is a beautiful painting.  Not sure what it is supposed to look like in your mind, but it is very well done.  I think that when we work on a painting over time, the negative aspects take us over and we lose our objectivity.  I hope you will really trust the positive feedback you will definitely get on this one.

I love the play of the light on the snow in the mountains. The light on the green in the mid-foreground gives it an almost surreal quality. I love this!   :heeha:

Thunderstruck?  Dumbfounded?  Something like that is what I felt when I read this...and profoundly emotional...(in a good way).  Nolan, you're right...I'm very hard on myself...maybe what I should start doing is finish a painting and then put it away for a spell and then go back as assess it.  I am so touched by your wife's reaction and your words and please thank her for me.  This was the nicest thing that's happened to me all day.   :flowers: for you and  :flowers: for your wife.  Thank you.

I tried to paint the mountains too - because i know the South island I wanted to make it closer to the photo but still not a copy. The mountains there are a young alpine range and you get big height changes only when you look down the river valleys or when you look at the giants like Mount Cook or Mount Aspiring.
Dennis where was the photo taken?
I painted this A4 size to fit a frame i already had but I'm not good at small paintings! I think i will have to do it again. Any suggestions for making it better?

You've got great distance and colour in your painting Mary. What paint colour did you use for your mountain rocks - was it the same as Nolan's?

Hi, Karen and thank you so much.  That's a really good question re my colors...initially, I did use Nolan's color mixes...sometimes though, I have trouble seeing the actual shades on the video so then I revert to the pdf to see if I can achieve what I'm seeing on screen which I did in this case.  That held for mtn #1.  THEN, lol, my paints dried up beyond being able to reconstitute so I mixed up new batches but I just could not get them back to the original shades and my impatience ruled so I used what I mixed.  And that's why the other two are a bit different from the first.  At that point, I stopped looking at the video because I was so far off that I used just the final reference painting and tried to salvage it that way.  My first darkest brown came out nearly black on the first one which I didn't really see until I started applying the other colors and I found it difficult to create contrast at that stage. And in my view, it made the rest look almost garish which is how I was seeing a patchwork quilt with identical colors to a bedspread I once had LOL!  Thanks for the question...it made me take another look at another contributing factor.  I need to take more steps back and really look at things before I proceed.  This was really a good learning one for me.  I'm working on the dunes now and thus far, for once, I'm really happy with the mountain area.  Great pickup!  Thank you again!

Thank you so much Val, Lillian Lynne, and Mary. Musika, I have taken old man mountain's face off - not sure what's there now instead! Thank you Nolan- it's those things I forget that make a big difference - I was too busy thinking about whether to add the tree or not to notice. I have added shadows to the sheep now - should i make the fence wire more noticeable? What would happen if i used a permanent ink pen for the wire - I don't think i can get such a fine line with a brush - does it mess with the acrylic paint or not work when I put a final varnish on?
Title: Re: 24 - Snowy Mountain Retreat
Post by: nolan on October 02, 2012, 10:16:40 PM
no rather leave the fence wire out than make it too thick, especially at the distance yours are into the scene, you will not see them in real like.

I wouldn't use a regular pen on the paint. You do however get acrylic based pens especially for use on acrylic paintings.

I'm glad I came across this one today. Mary, it's been very interesting to read the feedback you received for your painting. I've looked a few times and there's something about it that I can't express yet. I think it has a wonderful sense of freedom and playfullness in the scene. It's somehow hints at a style you may develop that is unique.
I love  it by the way and, think you should be proud of your work. I can't wait to see more.  :painting:

Tony!  Oh my gosh...I don't even know what to say except I'm very touched by your words.  You know, it's so funny - I don't see "style" and whatever it is I do even in the same sentence yet this has been cropping up more and more.  I think I know nothing about art appreciation/assessment except for a sense of knowing whether I like what I see and using that as my criterion; so, I'm honestly baffled when that word is applied to anything I'm doing here.  I really have no consciousness of anything other than just trying to follow where our master teachers are leading us so it gives me pause when someone sees a style because I'm mystified as to how that might relate to me.  All I know is that I LOVE doing this having come from a zero background of all things drawing and painting and for the most part, find mostly humor in what I'm doing. I far more appreciate looking at what everyone else is doing and I'm awed with the beauty I see everyone else creating.  PB provides so much more than art lessons - it's opened up so many new things that it would be almost impossible for me to list.  I am humbled and very grateful for your take on it because these are the things I think about in the wee hours of the morning when frustration reigns.  Thank you so much.   :flowers: :flowers: :flowers:

Nolan  :'( :'( please help me Nolan.

This is what I have done so far today. The picture might not have come out so good took it tonight with the flash on.

I am struggling with the GREENS! Always me and the greens. When I mix it on the palette it looks perfect, but as soon as it goes on the canvas there is no proper contrast. Look at the front trees and the back trees.
Please help me.

I am having same issues with the green leaves on my Rose.

This really makes me doubt myself so much that I don't even want to paint  :'(

the trees running along either side of the river will not have any noticeable difference between them as the physical distance isn't much. The contrasts you have on the individual trees look fine to me.

The greens of the grass is spot on as you have good distance into the painting, so all looks just fine to me Maryna

You have done a superb job with your mountains too  :cloud9:

I agree, you have done a wonderful job with this painting Helenty  :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

Lovely depth, the mountains look alive and the water is reflecting nicely

What I can suggest is that you strengthen the shadows cast by the foreground objects, by making them darker against the object and then fading them out a little slower so they become longer. That will add even more sun to the foreground  O0

just the snow's shadow colour bothers me. As it is a brown colour you tend to loose the look of snow. To get the look of snow you need to use a blue grey colour

Had avoided doing this one as I thought snow, South Africa?  I don't think so, but glad I did, I enjoyed the lesson thoroughly!

Might even do the other one sometime!  But for now I'm swapping the paintbrush for my other passion, the camera and we are off to the hush for two weeks, so will it be back to painting animals?       Think my house is full enough of them! :2funny: :2funny:

Robynann,

Yes, you got the photo in the correct topic, but you used a URL and not the embed code to get it here.  it needs to go into your GALLERY to get an embed code.  Nolan shows how here: http://www.paintbasket.com/members/index.php?topic=504.0 (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/index.php?topic=504.0)

As for the painting, good sky, great mountains.

Suggestions: The road should widen a bit more as it comes into the foreground.  The little sheep could use a tiny dab of shading to anchor them to the ground.  (It may be there but I cannot get the photo in closer to see)  And add a little more dark under the trees on the foreground side of the river.

Keep at it.  You are really doing well.

I guess i'm not ready for this lesson.  :'( After the blue tit class, my ego had risen. But now its crawling on the floor. :faint: Look at this paint, what a ugly mountain. The clouds are crying to me . I will try to finish this lesson but I'm not hopeful from the result.
The paint is wet and it is very difficult to give effect. I will wait for it to dry a little and I'll do it again

remember that you are now learning whole new techniques. You can't expect to just master them instantly. You need to be patient with yourself and give yourself time to get used to the new techniques.

Remember when you learned to ride a bicycle you probably first started off with a 3 wheel bicycle before progressing to side wheels, then 1 side wheel before you were able to ride without falling.

You must allow yourself to fall because that is how you learn. O0

Belma you are doing fine. Be patient with yourself and take as much time as you need. You can take that as gospel from someone who is still trying to do just that!       :run:       :2funny:

I finished the mountains. Did it happen? I forgot to paint the shadows of the fences :eyesclosed:. I could not do the clouds.  :( Do you have any suggestions for me? This was my hardest lesson.

And when I finished, the canvas fell on me.  :pullhair:  but i have done it. no problem.

Post by: Maryna on December 09, 2019, 05:55:50 AM
Belma, you have done very well.

If you accident is still there, use some turps on a clean brush, brush lightly over it lifting off the white paint and then dab on the painting with kitchen towel paper to get rid of the wetness.

For the clouds, Nolan did a lesson on painting clouds. I highly recommend that you watch it. https://paintbasket.com/shop/introduction-to-landscapes-skies-and-clouds-in-oil/ (https://paintbasket.com/shop/introduction-to-landscapes-skies-and-clouds-in-oil/) Important to have a base color, shadow and highlight.  Put your clouds maybe one before the other and not in a row, they will also not all be the same size. Work with a light touch.

Give your trees and house shadows and then come show again, you will see, just small tweaks make  a huge difference. Your mountains looks awesome.
Title: Re: 24 - Snowy Mountain Retreat
Post by: nolan on December 09, 2019, 07:10:02 PM
great job Belma

You have got some good practice with this painting. Landscapes do have a LOT of techniques you need to master in order to paint them well so don't be too hard on yourself - you can't expect to instantly master all these new skill, it takes practice. Even I am still learning my landscape painting skills. O0

Your clouds have the basics in. What you want to do however is make each cloud a different shape. Large clouds at the top as they represent close by and smaller as you get closer to the horizon as that represents far away.

Your shadows are also too light, as mentioned by the others. Just make them darker by darkening up against the object then fading lighter away from the pbject O0

You are doing great, keep it up :cheering:
