Title: azbutterfly's Lets Draw Work
Post by: azbutterfly on February 01, 2013, 07:30:22 PM
:painting: Greetings to all. I'm here to set up my thread for my Lets Draw work. I'm excited to learn how to draw better than my drawings of looking like a 5 year old can draw. I can "cheat" with drawing from someone taught me by using a picture and then scribble on the back and trace.  LOL Hopefully with practice I can learn to do good. It has to be better than my tree. It looks like broccoli. LOL

Hi AZ . . . .so glad you are starting out on the Let's Draw journey! It's just magical!!
I am at the end and don't want it to be the last day, :'( I'd like it to go on and on. . . .it's that kind of a course.
The very first thing you will learn is that it's not, remember NOT, cheating to trace the outline of something on to your paper and go from there! Nolan will teach you all sorts of ways to transfer images to your paper, tracing is only one of the ways.

Okay, lecture over. . .  welcome to the wonderful world of the Let's Draw Gang. . .  we have lot's of fun and tease each other unmercfully. . .  hope you are up for some of that!  :2funny:

Don't be shy to show us your drawings, you will probably think they are worse than they really are so just get them out here and let us see them. There are some really talented artists here who will give you lots of help, but if you don't show us your drawings, they can't help you. Me. . . . I just run around being silly. . . .(http://www.pic4ever.com/images/84.gif)  ask Sarah!

PS: my tree looked like a bunch of spaghetti. . . . . so broccoli is an improvement :2funny:

PSS: What's your name, or what can we call you?

Well Lillan already wanted to call me Madame Butterfly.  :2funny: My name is Lauralee. You can call me what you want.  :uglystupid2: I'm a little goofy as well. I did my realistic eye a few minutes ago from a YouTube video I found. I didn't use nothing to help. It's all freehand and it looks pretty good. I needed to draw something while waiting. LOL

:2funny: :2funny:  Okay, I  :2funny: don't even :2funny: know how to come :2funny: back to that one. Post your eye so we can see. :faint:  We try not to encourage her Lauralee. If you do post your eye here in your Let's Draw topic, you will already know how to post photos when class starts. There are instructions in one of the forum topics. If you have any trouble just hollar  :help:

So welcome to the family and I'm sure before too long you will be as hooked to the forum as we all are.  :yippee:
:gl2:  with your drawing and you will find our tutors very helpful. I've been drawing since 1989 and this course has taught me bundles.

:2funny: I'm from Arizona hence my username. I still haven't received my email, but I took a photo of the realistic eye I drew from the YouTube video. I'll post it for you. I didn't spend much time at all on it, maybe 5 - 10 minutes max while I viewed the video.

Wow! You conquered photo posting with no problem at all! Well.maybe one little problem. But I'll lie down when I look at it. ;)  Five to ten minutes??? I can't get my pencil and paper ready in five to ten minutes.  :tickedoff: WE'VE GOT ANOTHER SPEEDY ONE HERE!!!!! :run:  Well done. You are ready! Now if that darn email would just come.

   Lauralee, huh?  That's a very pretty name!  I think I'll call you that.  :)   I was just being silly!  As you can see, I'm not alone.  We're just a very happy bunch here, having fun and learning lots.

You did very well on the eye.  You'll do fantastic work in the drawing course, I just know it.

We give constructive feedback here, so be prepared.  It's all given in a friendly manner and with the aim of being of help.

Having said that, I hope you don't mind if I tell you one thing you could do to improve your eye drawing.  The iris should be perfectly round.  I see yours has a 'U' shape.  Other than that, I think your eye looks very well done.

P.S. I'm not the expert here!  I've been wrong before.  I always let Nolan or Dennis have the last word.  We are so blessed learn from them.

I'm looking forward to seeing what you do in the drawing course.  I amazed myself and I've been so impressed with the progress of everyone who has been working through it.

Lauralee, I think if you go to the PBTV and then your unlocked classes, you will find the drawing course there. Just click on it and you should be good to go. I may be a little off here, but I think that was one of the changes made.

I thought so too, Val. In fact I started my class before the first email, and that was before Nolan's changes. You might even have a couple classes waiting for you by now. :yippee:

:welcome:  again lauralee  yes your eye is really good just make the change as lillian suggests, rounding of the eye O0 I am sure that as the others suggest your drawing course should be in your unlocked class, can't wait to see your drawings, if your eye is anything to go by they will be brilliant  O0   I see you have already met a few of the others  :yippee: we are a great group here and always encourage and help one another  O0  yes we have our bit of fun too  :2funny:

I know about the rounding of the eye. It was a quick sketch and I didn't have an eraser. No I don't have access or any classes waiting for me. I'm ready for a refund sadly. I'm asked to either pay for the class or enter a serial number from the email I recieved. No staff has answered anything from me, going on 2 days other than my welcome post.  :-\ I'm pretty bummed.

You are now officially in the race. Don't you worry about anything, you have a lot of friends here to help you through should you need any advice with any of the projects.

:heeha:  LauraL you are in!!!! Now, girl, we are waiting for some drawings!
No pressure, of course, no pressure at all. (http://www.pic4ever.com/images/146fs495919.gif) :2funny:

Lauralee, I hope you understand this banter is all in fun and that we (I) don't mean to actually put any pressure on you to do anything. It's very hard to communicate exactly what one is feeling or saying when you can not see the other person, so we rely on the silly little "smilies" to get our point across. They can get out of hand when we are at our silliest though! So please take this as it is intended,. . . . . from my heart, I want you to do well and to enjoy the "Let's Draw" course, at your own chosen speed.  :1hug:

Now hurry up and get in the race. . . . .     :2funny: :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:

I was able to go to Office Max and got all the grids printed for .70 per copy. Wasn't too bad. How dare Staples be closed until noon.  :D  It's nice out so I'm taking my laptop into the back yard and watch the videos and stuff.

I would like to assure you that I was sure I was doomed when I tried them! :'(  But believe me, when they aren't just sitting alone on a piece of paper, they look just fine. Give them each a try for familiarity (hmmmmm, I should go back to that. Not sure i remember all my strokes and hand positions) and then move to your next step. You could keep practicing them a little at a time as you move along.

:2funny: Well I actually finished doing it once. I decided I could just copy the lines by pencil and do it that way instead of trying to take laptop back in and print it out.  :2funny: Mistake!  :'( So tomorrow I'm going to re-do it. It was funny with me trying to figure it out, but I think maybe that I know it a little I should be able to do it better for the next go.  :2funny: Maybe I'll be brave enough and post my original one with my next one. Has to be a huge difference.

So sorry Lauralee. . .
It appears that the nuts have hi-jacked your thread and gone off on a silly session! You must excuse their bad behavior for they are like small children and get bored very easily.

You see Sarah started it by picking on poor Roxy and then Val got into the middle of it and encouraged Sarah. Then Dorothy had to stick her oar in and stir the pot, so to speak! So then poor little old Roxy had to go get some outside help. There you have it in a nut shell.

Sorry Lauralee, but every so often this happens. . .try your best to just ignore them.  :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:

I agree with the erasing highlights thing.  It's very useful.  I can't count how many times I've used that knowledge since the first exercise.

I've done the strokes exercise. I've just made it through day 2. Have had a very bad headache the past 2 days so haven't gotten anything else. I'm planning tomorrow for the day to move on today 3.

It's strange I've looked all over this town for a 24 inch clear ruler and everyone is out.  Hopefully I won't need it anytime soon.

:help: I'm having issues with pencils I think aren't that great. One pencil the graphite is broken all the way through and others are broken in some places but not others. What brand pencils do you use? I have already spent way more money on these pencils and hate to spend a ton more. It's not the sharpener as I have a good one of those, it's the stupid pencils.  :'( The pencils also seem to be very harsh on the paper and I end up having to redo what I've already done because of it.

Well, that's not good Lauralee.  It's hard enough wrestling with the lessons let alone having to tame your pencils as well  :fight: .  I use Staedtler Mars Lumograph.  I'm pretty happy with them.  They are readily available and seem to be of good quality.

 :gl:  with your search.

Thanks. I'll have to move along the lessons the best I can as I cannot get the pencils until March. I just hate that I bought these pencils this past weekend and they are a mess. I took them back, but because I already opened and used them, they won't exchange or give me my $ back. Already spent too much money this month on this already.  :-\

Yeah I know. Being on SSI makes money even tighter than I wished. I hate having to waste the money on pencils and can't really use it for something like the work in the class. If I'm just doodling I can bare with them, but not the lessons.

Oh shoot. Pencil problems are the worst. The leads are broken??? I have had that with colored pencils, I guess. How frustrating. Just try to move forward with them through the starting exercises if you can stand it. Or even take a standard pencil to do some of your shading. At Amazon some brands of pencils like the Caran dAche Grafwoods are sold as individual pencils. A good 2B pencil would get you through a lot of your shading. They are very good. There is a forum topic about brands of pencils here somewhere. That is how I finally settled on mine. Then I struggled with paper, too. Oh it's a picnic to begin with! But it all gets better, and when you get to that point, the supplies that you have and like will last a long time.

I dont have a job, so It realy bites when I waste my money on something.  Just a couple of weeks ago I went to by some drawing paper,  I found what I thought was a nice 11x 14 spiral bound drawing paper notebook.  So when I got out to the car I opened it up just to find that the paper I had  bought was very cheap quality and had litle brown spots all over the paper; probably only 35-40 percent is actulay useable.

Ouch! I've been through the mill with pencils as well. I use Derwent Graphic for my serious work. I know, it's all serious...when I couldn't get any decent pencils I had some sent to me. They were a different brand and have had nothing but problems with hardspots in the leads. I still use them for sketching and some of the lessons. I still have four sets to get through. Too expensive to bin them....makes me really appreciate my Derwents!!
I understand the frustration when it comes to downloading. I bought many of the first live lessons without being able to watch or even see the replays! Sometimes a replay would take me as long as 5hrs. to see. Trouble with that...I'd forget what I'd seen by the end!  ;D  Things are quite a bit better now...sometimes you just have to change countries to get decent internet!  :heeha:

Sorry to hear you are having problems with your pencils, Lauralee.  I had a few problems too.  I finally settled on Derwent.  I did read an article about pencils.  I learned that you should never "drum" your pencils on the table.. you know, as you hold it between your two fingers, tapping it up and down usually while you are talking, thinking, etc.  This can break the lead/graphite inside the pencil as can dropping them too.  I'm not implying that you do this, but just a reminder to try never to.  I know the "drumming" thing can become a habit.. at least for me anyway.  You can also get pencil extenders which allows you to use pretty much all of your pencil as it gets shorter and shorter.  Good luck on your selection.  I hate those hard ones that are suppose to be soft!!

So sorry to hear of your pencil problems Lauralee.  . . . .it's a real bummer when that sort of stuff happens! But I can tell you from experience that you can go ahead and draw even if all you have is a "store pencil"!

When I started, I went through the course right up to the Teddy bear with one pencil just a simple HB pencil. It was the only one I could find in the drawer but I was so determined to learn to draw that I would have used anything I could have gotten my hands on! Later I got a set of Derwent pencils and they turned out to be a problem at times ( hard spots in the lead) But, I'm retired and don't have much money to toss around, so I'll stick with them. They were rather expensive!

The point  is, Lauralee. . . it really doesn't matter what pencil you use, just pick one up and "Let's Draw!!!

Sorry about your Derwents, too, Rox... I suppose any brand is not always perfect.

Don't know what it is Dainne, some of them have those hard bits, and others are just fine. It was the 2H's that were the worst, so I bought another one from Michaels and this one is okay. . . .  can't figure it out.
Next time I have a few extra $$, I'll spring for some Staedtler Lumograph. . .  oh yummmm. . . . . .

Oh my gosh, Rox... I just looked at my pencil collection, and I have thoseStaedtler Lumograph!  I actually used them on the barn.. probably the fish too.  I didn't even realize the name on them.. Unless I have my glasses on, I can't always see  the name clearly.  I bought these a while back... but I don't remember where.  I really didn't know much about the different brands, but was familiar with Derwent.  I know I used them some, but now that I think about it, the Staedtlers were the ones I used most on the two recent drawings!  So they are considered premium?? I don't even remember how much I paid for them... a set of 6 or 8 pencils in a metal box.  I'll have to compare them a little closer with the Derwent as I continue to use them.

Hi Lauralee, I used whatever I have in the pencil case. I have Steadtler reds and Steadtler blue. I don't know what there are called but over the years I've collected so many different types of pencils.

When I first started to draw I had no idea about brands and picked one a 2B, 4B and 6B and I did all my drawings with these 3 pencils. It's only since I did this course that I learned about the 2H etc.

We do what we can with what we have.  :-\

First sorry for the purple color on paper. It's white, but had leaning against laptop when took picture. I'm not liking the shadowing on the bottom. It looks flat. What would you do to fix it? Also not sure about the ball...go ahead please tell me what I need to do to fix this lesson. Not just the shadow on the bottom.

It looks like the ball is falling into a hole.  :2funny:

Okay, Here she goes! Off and running. You are doing fine, Lauralee. Your ball is nice and round and roly-poly! Not easy. I would say that though you don't want too much shadow on the front side, you could just round it out a little bit. Then just soften out the line at the farthest right of the shadow as if it were just going to blend into the table and you'll be fine. The landscape looks good.

:yippee: :yippee: :yippee: :D Oh boy oh boy oh boy. A friend of men gave me a Valentines Day card and some $ as a gift. I'm single and 99% of the time it's just another day. I could use the $ for anything of a zillion things I could use/need, so what did I do. I went to the local Michaels as the regular art store close to home had already closed. They didn't have the pencils I got the other day, but I got a set of 12 Derwent. 6B - 4H.  :yippee: :yippee: It shows you us singles can have a happy Valentines.  :)

This weekend is a free weekend.  O0 :2funny: :yippee:

Hi everyone. Sorry been MIA. Had a fall and bruised my hip bone so couldn't do much. I have been drawing today.   :) My scanner isn't the greatest so it doesn't show everything right. I'll have to see what I can do to fix it. If I take pictures it shows up purple so I'll figure it out. For now this is it. When I re-sized these, it changed things as well.

I redid what I had since it wasn't much. Here is my pitiful tree. :2funny: There is some shading and stuff that doesn't show up, but it is still pretty sad. LOL

My strokes exercises. :crazy2:

My Erasing a Landscape. I do have shading under the boat that doesn't show up in the picture.

*edited to say the scanner is one that feeds through, not one that lays flat.*

Your first tree is the very best kind of 'pitiful' ( it is NOT pitiful) tree to have at the beginning of the Let's Draw class, because if you really learn to observe and to draw what you really see, not what your left brain says you see, you will have a terrific record of progress. This is just exactly what Nolan and Dennis want to see right now. Don't worry about getting proportions right or perspective right. The class will give you all kinds of tricks and tools to do that correctly. All you have to worry about is taking the time to train your artist's eye and learn what your pencils can do! Oh this is going to be a great ride! I hope your hip is on the mend!

Hey Lauralee . . . sorry about your hip. . . .darn things hurt like the very "dickens" don't they!  :(

It's great to see you have been drawing and getting started on the course. Your tree is not pitiful, it's actually kinda cute in it's own way! What is important is that this is the marker that you  measure against to show how far you can go with this course.
Make sure you keep it safe so you can compare at the end. . . . it's such a hoot to drag out that tree after you do your last one :2funny: :2funny:

:2funny: My tree looks like broccoli.  :2funny: Well one that kind of is going bad maybe. I had a tree in the backyard that had to be cut down due to it being attacked by bees and had a colony. There were these two woodpeckers who had babies in it. It was so funny...let me share my story. I'd be sitting in the backyard with a friend and the male woodpecker (we named Joe) who was going like crazy in the hole they cut out. I swear if I didn't see it with my own eyes I wouldn't believe it. He would stick his head out and spit sawdust out the hole.  :2funny: then one day my friend and I heard this squawking like crazy. Margaret (the female we named) was giving Joe some lip.  :2funny: We came up with what she was yelling at him about...Margaret - Hurry up and get that nest done. I'm about to have these babies you did to me. I have to carry these things and you been taking your sweet time thinking its no big deal...blah blah blah.  :2funny:Truly it was funny with her squawking. We were just sitting inside things nice and quiet. She was really going to town when we went out to see what it was. She was all in his face. The reason for this story is I tried to do the pic of what it looked like for my tree and I added their hole.  :2funny:
