Great job Jenny  O0 I'd say you did just fine.
I really got in a kerfuffle after the 'blue' fiasco  :D   I think I'll try and finish it with whatever blue it is I have there  :heeha: and see what happens. Good thing Dennis explains things so well.

This is a first for me--first insect--or fly guy. I really feel sorry for this guy. It looks as though he was in a brawl and got the worst of it. Did I say first? last also! Thank you Dennis, I love spending time with Paint Basket and looking forward to the new things you mentioned.
Jennylynn you did a fine job on your fly.

Carol, I think you've done great with this little fellow. Don't be so hard on yourself, 1st you actually finished the paintalong, 2nd regardless of his 'condition' (  ;D ) he is still easily recognizable for what he is. Job well done.  O0

Not so bad at all, Carol!  Paint alongs are a real challenge but you made it to the end.   :congrats:

A little heavy with the paint on the wings, but you did manage to mix all the colors and got them where they should be.   You even managed to do all the fine details on the wings and those hairy legs.

Here are two photos of the dragonfly that I had riding along with me last week.  When I got home he didn't want to leave my car, so I let him hop onto my hand where he stayed for quite awhile.  I enjoyed my time with him!  We had these pretty little blue ones, and also larger ones that have black and white striped wings.  I hope I get a change to take a photo of one of those sometime.  I took these with my phone, but they turned out pretty good.  I hate to admit that the wrinkled hand belongs to me!!

You're welcome to use these as reference photos to paint from.  But - please, if you use my hand, leave out some of the wrinkles  :2funny:

This is my rendition, not as neat as I would have liked it to be as I am 'background' challenged for sure. Now to go back and have a look at all the others who have submitted.    Patricia

It was interesting today. We have had no power for a week after a once in forty year storm. When we got it back i found my computer had no sound so I have just been watching not listening but i tried to paint along anyway - a bit behind because i spent so long trying to get sound. My paper has buckled but i think I can smooth it out. Some details still to do and i will have to invent the second dragonfly or wait for the replay.
Jennylynn, Patricia and Doina - your dragonflies are all pretty - and i love the different colourings.

You folks are popping out dragonflies really fast - nice work from you all - Karen, Harold, Doina, Patricia to add to the gallery that Jennylynn and Carol started.

I tend to be a clumsy artist, so truly admire those who paint such tiny objects.

Looks like it was a fun class today.  Dennis, you taught them well.

Patricia, look at those eyes!  Even "buggy" eyes look good under your hands!  Isn't he pretty?  Good job!

Karen, lovely background.  I like the green!  Never mind the buckling; it will all "iron" out.   :congrats: on a job well done!

Harald, as always, your rendition is beautiful.  I love all the detail you put into your paintings--and you did this at the same pace as Dennis!  Entirely impressive!!  Keep 'em coming, buddy!   :yippee:

:thankyou: :thankyou: :thankyou:  Thank you Doina, Mea and Jani for your comments on my paint a long.  Jani, I got a bit lost around the eye section ... doesn't take much for me to get lost these days but thank you for your always sweet and uplifting comments.

Jennylynn, after posting my effort last night, I went back and had a look at everyone's painting and I especially looked at your background and thought that it was superb. So I found it interesting that you should comment on using a size 20 brush which I will try next time.  Thanks for the help Jennylynn.  This is what I love most about this forum, we nurture and help each other to grow. Bless you all for having such kind hearts.

His head AND rest of him sure looks great to me.  All I see there and my memory may be off too are the little dabs of yellow under his eyes and "mouth" area?  If I'd never seen Dennis do it though, I'd have just said perfect!  And this as a paint along?  Wow, Jennylynn...I was THERE and couldn't do it!

LOL..you sound like me, Carol..LOL...but I think you did a wonderful job and your colors are great.  I think your twig may need some lightening on the upper half of it and I only say that because when Dennis was doing it, the application really caught my attention.  But for a first time?  Yikes...I couldn't do it if it were my 10th time!  Great job!

I'm with you on this one Mary. All I got was a background much darker than intended, and a bit of a yellow wash on the wings. I'd forgotten how strong the Artist colours are over the Cotman.  ???   Better get your  8) sunglasses on folks, things may be a bit bright before I get sorted here again.  :D :painting: :coolsmiley:

This is a re-post. Lillian and Mary thank you for your suggestions.  I tried to lighten the wings and the twig as you suggested.
Great job everyone: Jennylynn, Doina, Patricia, Harald and Karen too. Don't worry about that wrinkled paper, it makes for an interesting background. I let my light paper wrinkle all it wants.

Mary I really appreciate your sweet comments but trust me, I am "background" challenged for sure.  However, Jennylynn said that she did her background using a number 20 brush .... I looked to see if I had that size but haven't so will be shopping this week to get one.  Hope it will help!! Only time will tell!!

Carol - an excellent redo.

WOW!!!  :heeha: I just don't know what to say.... .... :cloud9:  Val, Jani, Susan, Patricia and Rkymtnmary  :thankyou:  so very much for all your wonderful and encouraging comments. This is just what I needed being so insecure about what I do. But i know now that whit practise I will be able to paint like "the old days" righthanded. I still reach out with my righthand to pick up things, all that is possible too, but I dont use it much especially not for creating.
I really wished I could effort buying some more lessons   :cost: :'(  eg watercolour or acrylic/oils but live is very hard at this part of the world, and there isn't much we can do  :( . But I still have some paint and paper, and some canvas and canvasboards, so I have the material even it is limited  :yippee: .
I still have some of the acrylic lessons that I bought and the free watercolour lesson, and ofcourse I can use all the templates Dennis put up for the lessons. I just look  :coffee:  at all your paintings for the colours, the technique is something different, but I think just being able to paint will be more than enough  :smitten: .

So, i myself look also forward to my next  :painting: .
Thank you again for your awesome comments and support,  :flowers: :flowers:

My version after a major mishap from being careless...I'd just finished the thorax on the little one and somehow touched it with my finger and smudged both left wings on it even outside the outline of its body and it was NOT a happy accident!  I fixed it up as best I could so if that one looks a bit odd, that's why.  But the best part was that I was doing this outside on my deck and as I was painting, a REAL dragonfly came by as if to visit...I did get a photo and will post as soon as I figure out how to get it from my phone to here...might be a while!   :2funny: :2funny: He's probably telling all his friends to stay off that crazy lady's deck!

Nina and Mary your dragonflies look just awesome  :smitten: , love the fine details and Mary i just love the story of the dragonfly that came by. I love dragonflies and butterflies and made a lot of photo's of them. Only this year we didn't see many of them, just a few.

Patricia and Jani - Thank you so much for your sweet comments and you're right...my eyes keep going right to the scene of the crime!  I was really horrified when it happened because it went right over the transparency of the wings (both) and over the line into the background...it was kind of like a double fingerprint.  LOL  But I walked away for a while after it and I got it to where it wasn't headed immediately to the garbage file!  I still want to do it again and thanks so much for your words of encouragement.   :thankyou:

Goodmorning Dennis,

I just wanted to let you know that i really enjoyed the Dragonflylesson and even i didn't paint along i did draw the Dragonfly that day lefthanded, that allready was a big challenge. I have finished it a few days later lefthanded and i am realy very, very happy with it. I hope i will be able to paint more, but for now i have to deside if i do my operation. It is difficult because they don't know if my wrist will heal good or that it even get worse. I have to make my desision this weekend and i still dont know if i go for the operation or just live with my wrist as it is now, but i know that, whatever i deside, i will be able to paint and not that bad too, i think ^_^.

Here's my Dragonfly, i think you missed it in the topic, but I just wanted to share my first lefthanded painting and hope you like it and what of you think of it. Right now i am not in the position to buy anymore lessons, live is still very hard right here, but i still have the Wood and Stone lesson, and besides that i can use the templates you uploaded, and with all the paintings of all the members i will have a great 'book' of inspiration.

Have a great day and a nice weekend, as for all of you my dear friends,
Riya

Riya,

I love your dragonfly.  The blue hue is exactly what I was trying to create for my bird of paradise.  Did you mix it, or was it straight out of the tube?

Gorgeous!

Riya, I really must congratulate you on this painting    I think you have made a better job of this one than I would have if I tried with MY left hand

Your background colour has brought out the delicate transparency of the wings and for a "dumb" left hand you have painted the small details like a craftsman. O0

Come to think of it - you should paint ALL future paintings with your left hand :flowers:
Title: Re: LESSON #65 - Dragonflies

:thankyou: so much Lillian, Jani, Nina, Val, Mea and Dennis for your wonderfull comments :smitten: . Im still very proud of my first lefthanded painting, it looks so much better than i could have dreamd of.

Lillian, I found it difficult to keep my hand in controle, a lot of shaking and going the other way then it had to, but after slowing down it did go mucht better. I really had to concentrate on what i was planning to do, that way i got controle.....just a bit  :) .  It still is something that cost a lot of energy and thinking but i really love how my painting looks, yes... I am very proud...and happy with my cute Dragonfly :cloud9: .

Val...that is a very nice compliment, thank you so much  :flowers:

Mea, thank you so much, the blue is straight out of the tube and I put on two or three layers to get it so intense. I do love bright and intense colours especially the blue. It is exactly the colour of the Dragonflies i have seen, so I am very happy with how the Dragonfly turned out.

Dennis, Thank you so very much for your wonderful comment  :flowers: :smitten: it is much appreciated and the best encouraging reply someone can get. The background was something unexpected, one of these lucky accidents. And because painting cost somuch energy and lack of cotrole and practise, made that i didn't try to go over it again . I just put on the watercolour once and let it dry. Normaly i see all kind of flaws and try to 'fix' them...always bad  :2funny:
I was surprised too that the fine detailing did look that good, maybe because my hand is not half as steady as my dominant hand and goes everywhere it shouln'd  and the fine lines just turned out good just like the little hairs on the legs..didn't know i was able to do so.

Maybe i do as you say and paint only lefthanded.....even when after the operation my right hand is much better. Yes, i have decided to do the operation...I will take the risk, but I am really scared. But when i dont i am sure one day i will regret that and than it is too late. Now the change on healing good and be able to use my wrist again is 75%, in a year that will be just 50% and every year it will be more difficult to repair the damage.

So, wish me luck..tomorrow i'll go to the hospital and at the end of the day i will hopefully awake after the operation (my biggest fear is not to wake up). It will take several weeks before we know if all is good, but that is the future.

Dennis thank you so very much for these warm and kind words, they will be in my mind together with all the other kind, warm and encouraging words i received. They will give me great comfort and trust in the operation. I am sure that it will be just fine and that i am in good hands.....when only my head and body would believe it

Riya a great painting of the dragonfly.  You have reached such wonderful heights with your less dominant hand. You can be very proud of your achievements.  Have positive thoughts about your wrist operation and just believe, feel and know that all will be O.K. Our minds are very powerful and what we think about, we bring about.  So think on good things.  Please let us all know how you are getting along and I will lift you up in prayer.  Patricia

This was my first paint-a-long and I was so disappointed with the result, I wouldn't even put it up in my portfolio.  The wings look deformed and the background was so bland!  I decided at the last minute to try the class, but was so rushed getting it drawn and ready that I couldn't get the smaller dragonfly painted.  After this, I decided to always be prepared. That's what this is all about - learning, and I learned so much by my failures.

This will be of encouragement to you as well as all the other beginners and newbies along the road.

Alice, a good suggestion by Dennis.  We all hopefully, learn from our failures and if anyone has never failed at anything, then they have done nothing.  You are a fantastic artist and even what you think is a failure, to me looks pretty good.  Patricia

Thanks, but I really hate that dragonfly!  I will try to paint a dragonfly again, as you suggested, but I may use a different photo.   This one had sharp focus on the eyes and body, but I think the wings were in motion so the image of them was blurred.

No, don't use a different photo - otherwise there cannot be a comparison.
