Title: Continuation of "The Nature Series"
Post by: ImBatman on August 29, 2013, 10:51:31 AM
Hi everyone

Here is the first in a series of nature images that I have abstracted a bit to create a painting that can add a bit of interest and colour to a room.

This one is based on an image from a Flickr friend of a friend who said I could use his images.

It is a 500 * 760mm (approx 20 * 30in) double thick canvas, in Acrylics.

Batman,

I am such a literal person that I have trouble understanding abstract art.  But, I do think that your "ring of fire" (sun?) looks good, but maybe could use a bit more shading.  I do not know what the light and dark purple shapes represent; although, the creases in the light purple look like creases on my abdomen when I eat too much.

I'll have to learn more about abstract art.  Thanks for opening my eyes to more dimensions in art.

:thankyou: Mea. As soon as I read what you said about the yellow area, I knew exactly what you meant and instantly knew what I think I already knew it needed.

:painting: license helped in this case to really improve it - the source image had that as an extremely bright single tone, yellow patch. I used Cadmium and Hansa yellows originally, but have now updated it with some yellow ochre and the updated painting looks better now. .

Well I think so anyway.

PS - you don't have to "understand" abstract - it is your interpretation that matters. In fact yours gave me a little grin due to what the original is actually a photo of...

I'm very comfortable with your colors...meaning that this painting appeals to me. I really like it, and a little more shading might change the picture to be 'warmer'.  I feel that I've put my head underwater and am seeing beautiful coral, sea anenomes, and the feathery sea cucumbers!

 :thankyou: Retta and Val.

The yellow section is a little darker and streakier on the real painting that it show up in the photo.

Funny how the "coral" theme is popping up - a bit closer to what the original image was of...

Hi everyone

Here is the second in the series of nature images that I have abstracted a bit to create a painting that can add a bit of interest and colour to a room.

This one is based on another image from a Flickr friend of a friend who said I could use his images.

Love this "Nature Series" Batman  :) . The first one reminds me of a flower very close up, pretty colors.
The second one is really attractive! I immediately thought of "animal print" when I saw it. I blew it up and the textures are really cool. Looking forward to more of the series.....

Glad you all like the series so far. I have a lot more images to work from - a lot are my own, not just a friends.

I'm having fun with Photoshop and FotoSketcher doing mock-ups to paint from.

Another weekend and another painting in The Nature Series - this one is number 3. 600 x 500mm Acrylics. Again based on that friend of a friends photos.

They look really good once I gloss and varnish them, but it is best to photograph them beforehand.

Good, productive weekend this weekend.

I finished this one watching the Bathurst 1000 (for non-Aussies, it's the biggest Aussie car race) this afternoon.

It's a good way to spend my time in my lonely old house, but there is another motive - to see if I can build a portfolio worthwhile approaching galleries with.

Hey, maybe over time I can raise enough cash to give it a lick of paint too. Or pay someone else to while I stay out of the sun and do a little more indoors   :painting:

Title: Re: The Nature Series
Post by: Germa on October 18, 2013, 09:05:41 AM
no 1 has these complementary colours too, and that's great.
But for me, it's the composition too, and the fact that my brain caught something 'recognisable' very quick, as a leaf, falling down, almost at 1/3 on the left.
That invites me to look further, longer, to the painting.
Title: Re: The Nature Series
Post by: ImBatman on October 19, 2013, 09:24:13 PM
So Germa, it was the implied movement in it that got you in?

Hmm, most of the stuff I have to work from for this series is based on super Macro photos of flowers and other flora. Not much movement...

And it's funny, your perceived movement from that swish you are talking about isn't actually a leaf in the photo. Believe it or not, that is a super Macro photo of a bud (the thing on the green stem on the right) in front of a background fully formed flower of the same plant. The yellow "leaves you see" are some very distinct yellow "rays" coming out from the centre of the flower along some red petal edges. And the painting background is actually that full flower behind - but only about a quarter of the complete flower itself!

The fun of abstraction.

Batman.
Title: Re: The Nature Series
Post by: Germa on October 19, 2013, 09:29:13 PM
I knew the reference is a macro, but you made a new image of it, and in my case, it's my mind which 'decides' what I see.
That's the fun of abstractionism, and that's the fun of our brains too; the brains fit in what the eye actually doesn't see.

Here is The Nature Series - this one is number 6. 600 x 500mm Acrylics. This time based on a photo from Paint My Photo. This was one weird looking flower, the dark patches in it come from 'tears' in the original photo and the way PhotoSketcher mashes it up with my parameters.

Dunno about seeing them all hanging together - My house doesn't have enough wall space for that... It would need to be in a gallery or my own exhibition and that would need a lot more than just 6.

Besides, I have heaps of source stuff to work from. I don't know how long I will continue to the series for.

They are all in my Gallery under their own section though : http://www.paintbasket.com/members/index.php?action=media;sa=album;in=1424 (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/index.php?action=media;sa=album;in=1424)

the last 2 are more different to me; not as abstract as the first 5.
There you painted really macro and everybody's mind was free to see what it wanted to see.
The last 2 are beautiful flowers, but that's what it is, my mind can take a nap and rest.

The first 5 invited more to look again, and again, and imagine what I see, the last ones are don't.

Well Germa and Denise , there's not much plan really. I have heaps of these images printed out in a box.

When it is "Fresh Canvas" stage, I sift through them and take out the one that takes my fancy at the time. Obviously I pre-do the cropping etc though.

Okay, I've been debating whether anyone would really be interested in the full story, but since Liz asked, here is the story as to how this all came about, and my latest in the series, completed today, too. It is another 600x500mm Acrylics... It's always Acrylics - I don't know why I say that each time (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/Smileys/webby/2funny.gif)

When I was doing the earlier Watercolours tutorials, I was showing an Indian workmate and friend. This was the earlier stuff with flowers. He said, hey I have a friend back in India who does photography as a hobby, so he gave me the Flickr details.

Anyway, I had a look and he had some super Macro shots of flowers on there, so I got his contact details off Karthik at work and asked if he would mind if I painted some of  them and if there were any concerns down the track if I were to sell my stuff. His response was great and said go for it - he was happy someone appreciated his photos. Here's his Flickr account: http://www.flickr.com/photos/srivid/ (http://www.flickr.com/photos/srivid/)(of course I have permission to use his stuff, but you can always browse. There is some cool stuff.)Anyway, after Nolan's Abstracts lesson in Acrylics, I fooled around in FotoSketcher as a digital form of creating thumbnail paintings without actually painting to see how they might turn out as paintings. They sat on the back burner for months.

Recently, for $10 I bought a Kindle book called "Starving to Successful (http://www.amazon.com/Starving-Successful-Artists-Galleries-ebook/dp/B004UVQPMC/ref=sr_1_1_bnp_1_kin?ie=UTF8&qid=1382592441&sr=8-1&keywords=starving+to+successful)" to read on my computer. It is written by a gallery guy and it is basically a text book on how to break into the gallery world from scratch.

In it a really big suggestion is to have a decent catalogue when you start approaching (after you have found the right ones) galleries. But that the catalogue should be in "your style" and suitable to the "style" of the gallery. So don't go with a realistic portrait of Aunt Mary, your cat, a couple of landscapes, an abstract, some birds at the park and a couple of still lifes and expect them to open their arms to you.

Galleries want artists who can prove they are going to be able to produce repeat sales by attracting return custom. And you do that by having a hefty recent catalogue of an identifiable style.

Hence my Nature Series. Now, no two are the same, but I think you can agree that - even though they aren't all the same - there is something distinctively "me" about them.

Due to some stuff at work not going my way (moved out of my programming job into an admin role due to government cutbacks etc) I resigned and have used this week to use up some worked up time and used that time to get stuck into these and do some more work learning how to program iPhone apps and get my name out there with some IT recruiting agencies. Back to work tomorrow for my last day (well for my send off morning tea - I've been there 15 years so I didn't really just want to walk out the door without saying goodbye.) So I might actually need to start selling these sooner rather than later.

...mysterious ways, as they say.

So that's the story and here is the next one, hope you like it:

The Nature Series no. 10
The Nature Series no. 10

As per usual, any comments are welcome.

Oh! Thank you too for your "story" which was very interesting reading. Whenever I think of you and your paintings, what comes to my mind immediately is the 3-D red heart which wasn't a part of your nature series but obviously made a lasting impression on me and was probably the stepping stone to your nature series.  All excellently done Batman.    Patricia

I am a bit believer in "everything happens for a reason" and "nothing happens to you that you can't handle"
Sometimes it takes years before you can look back and realise why certain things happen to you, but they are all for the good and to make you a better person in the end.

I think these paintings you are doing now are already proof of that Batman. They have a dimension to them that your previous paintings didn't and I know that you can sell these anywhere, including to businesses.

Keep going with them, then select the best of the best. Turn them into prints, calendars, iPhone covers, you name it and sell them.

It's amazing what you're doing!  Can you share the 'trick' you have for overlapping the yellow strokes and their shapes?  I've heard of people using yarn, stencils and sponges for stamping/printing on shapes, etc.  But you have a nice effect here.

 :thankyou: Liz.

Trick? No trick really. Just a simple device called a hair dryer. I use acrylics remember, so they dry quickly. The whole painting started with a Magenta solid background (painted roughly in a circular fashion. It started from a photo of a funny flower with those tentrilly things coming out of the centre, and the three bulby things (a bit like a Hibiscus has) sticking out.
Add some Batman and what you see is the result. :heeha:

PhotoSketcher did a real treat on Abstracting this image for me! Then of course I painted it and it changed a bit more - but is pretty close to the PhotoSketcher mockup. Can anyone guess what the hell it is???

:thankyou: for the encouragement May lynn. There's method to the madness. Aiming for a start of 25-30 good quality, similarly themed pieces. Fully, high-glossed and varnished using the two-step varnishing method.

Looking for work at the moment, so one a day is very feasible. I have a library of something in the order of 400 stock images to work from, so it's just a case of painting and seeing how I go... And the good thing so far is that no one has said - 'oops, this one was a bit of a miss'! :2funny:

Good thing is I accumulated by buying in these canvasses in bulk when I was in a better financial. The place I get them from only delivers cartons from their online store for damage reduction. I have plenty on hand to get past my first target, before needing to sell to replace.

Do you paint the sides of your double dick canvasses too Batman?
I mean, not only in the backgroundcolour, but do you give them a design too?

The October leaves I painted are on a double dick canvas too, but I finished the bottom side only yesterday because I couldn't turn the painting while 3 sides are still very wet.
When the 4'th side was finished, I had to hang it on a wall to let it dry all over the place, and while typing, I realise you don't have that problem when painting with acrylics.

No 13 isn't a bad number in your collection. ;)
Another great one.

#15 Looks like the blending went better today. Can be a right nuisance when the weather has more control over your medium than you do!  :pullhair: I'm right there with you!  ;D

I like this one, has a softer look to it. Fun to see the progression, keep 'em coming.  O0

Can't really say anything about opening #14 unfortunately Val. Might be one for Nolan.

(http://www.paintbasket.com/members/Smileys/webby/thankyou.gif) for the comments. Gotta say, the blending being better or worse isn't an issue. Fotosketcher (I use certain settings to try to mash each image up similarly) seems to give different results for different image "types". And since I use those as a a basis...

I have found that lower quality images (ie lower resolution) and images with more jagged edged sections tend to create images that lend themselves better to layering versus the smoother types, which tend to create more graduations suited to blending. I tend to steer away from the blending types.

One I'm better at it, but two I'm not going in the direction of more realism/photo-realistic stuff with this set of paintings. The settings I use in FotoSketcher are designed to push away from that direction for that purpose. Also it is the look that I prefer. Might be something to do with extra drama or something.
Or then again, I could just be full of crap, as per usual. (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/Smileys/webby/2funny.gif) (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/Smileys/webby/2funny.gif) (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/Smileys/webby/2funny.gif)

Meaning your colors and blending are very comfortable to study.  You've done a great job on all of them, and I sure wish you well.  I can't see any problem of getting interest once you've put them 'out there'.  They are very appealing and so very interesting.  Good luck, .....  there's always a reason for the path we sometimes are forced to make a choice on, and it will all open up for you.
Oh....hope you get your phone call soon.  If you don't, then all the more to find an outlet for showing your work.

This one was pretty fun to play with. Creating all the greenery then ploping paint over the top with the sponge.

And now for my newest creation:
The Nature Series no. 20 - this one kinda worked out a fair bit different to the mock up - the colours were a bit more muted in it, but at least there is plenty of bright colour (surprise, surprise for me!)

As per usual it is an Acrylics on Canvas, again 500*400mm. I reckon it would brighten up a lounge or kitchen space, but probably wouldn't go down so well in the bedroom!

lynn, the reference photo was actually a photo of a floral bouquet, with some really funky looking flowers - never seen flowers like them before. I think it's why the colours seem to work - flower arranging is an artform that relies on that sort of thing.

Hi there everybody

I finished this one off early this morning. It is an Acrylics on 508x762mm stretched canvas. This one is very much impasto and should really come up a treat when glossed and varnished.

Still sticking to the theme of taking a real nature photo and messing with it in Photoshop, then Fotosketcher, the result is this case created what I think you'll agree is a real explosion of colour...

this one is a little too busy for me, sorry Batman :-\

I have found that if you want to use a lot of colours in a painting like this then you need the painting to be either:
a) steeped either hot or cold, with accents of the other temperature over the base
b) blend from one colour to the next harmoniously

Here is an example of one of our local artists that does this magnificently:
Vjekoslav Nemesh (http://www.nemeshart.com/Exibitiononline.htm)

I guess it's the trouble I get into working from a source photo. Trying to represent the colours that are there to stay kind of recognizable as something from nature, but then trying to avoid getting too busy. Especially when in certain environments, nature throws these explosions of colour at us...

Oh well, the next one might be okay...

On to the next one, The Nature Series no. 24. 500x400 stretched canvas - in Acrylics...

The Nature Series no. 24
The Nature Series no. 24

Couldn't get this one to photograph properly this evening. I might try again in the morning to see if I can get a better image. The blues and the whites seem to be fighting each other - especially that top middle section. But I hope the image gives a pretty good idea of what it looks like.

Let me know what you think.

Onto The Nature Series no. 25 - Acrylics on 609x508mm stretched, double thick canvas.

The interesting thing behind this one is the day before I'd bought a 2kg bag of onions and don't ask why, but for some reason my :crazy2: head said to give it a go and paint this whole painting only using that onion bag.
Everything except my signature that is. LOL. I think it turned out okay - just think of all the money wasted on brushes...
 :2funny:

Here's the bag:
2kg onion bag
2kg onion bag
Here's the result:
The Nature Series no. 25
The Nature Series no. 25

As per usual, let me know how you think - especially about the effect provided by using such a primitive tool.

Well another day spent job waiting/hunting and watching the cricket and another  :painting: completed in The Nature Series.

This one is  on a 609 x 762mm double thick canvas, done as per usual in Acrylics. With a 75mm stiff bristle cheapie brush initially bought online as a "varnishing brush" but proved totally uselless for the job, so I used it for this:

The Nature Series no. 26

The full image is just OK - but the thumbnail gives a fair indication. Let me know what you think.

I tried getting the colours right in Photoshop, but I haven't learned the fooling with colours stuff properly. That centre part is actually pure cadmium red in the centre, but shows up decidedly orange.

More work to to do on Photoshop lessons I guess. But with looking for work, my Nature series, Watercolours lessons, learning my iOS progrramming...
As a warning though - I have started on the next in the Nature Series... muhahahahahaha :crazy2:

:thankyou: jennylynn - it just just uses a reduced range of colours. It would still really brighten up a dull space.
 :thankyou: mea

Really going to have to consider the selling side of things. I showed images on my iPad to some peeps at a couple of gatherings on the weekend and most of them have been saying things like "better than a lot of the rubbish(???) you see in galleries" "you should sell these" etc.

So much to think about.
Throw into the mix  that I can swing between being be a phenomenal procrastinator and mad workaholic etc etc etc :2funny:
The book about breaking into galleries had some good advice, but it kind of expected you to already be a struggling professional artist as a start point - not just an amateur looking to break in.

Anyway, time to get onto the next painting... Sales unlikely without them.

:thankyou: Denise :thankyou: Nolan and  :thankyou: Retta for your encouragement.

I went to my GP today and "just happened" to have my iPad in my bag. When he asked what I had been up to, I said that along with other things like my indoor soccer, I'd been progressing with my painting and asked if he'd like to have a look. He liked pretty much the whole lot!

After looking through the series he asked if I want to display one in his waiting room! And to prepare a little card below with contact details etc!!! He's been my doctor for more than 10 years, so he was happy to help out and it would give his room a bit of a face lift. I'm pretty sure the same black and white photos of olden days Brisbane have adorned his walls since I first started seeing him.

So I will be taking no. 21 (http://www.paintbasket.com/members/MGalleryItem.php?id=12397) on the 6th Jan 2014 and he said to leave it up for a couple of months who knows?

Good thing about this is that his office is right in the middle of the Brisbane CBD (for those who don't know, Brisbane is the capital city of Queensland, Australia) - lots of his clients are professionals etc and he is always super busy, so lots of traffic. Could be great, free exposure!

The first step???
 :yippee:

Maybe I can spend Xmas on setting up a website and have the URL on the card too... Only 3 weeks...

Title: Re: Continuation of "The Nature Series"
Post by: ImBatman on January 30, 2014, 11:31:58 AM
Hi everyone

Here is the latest in my series. It is taken from a photograph from the first of the photo tours I did. This one was taken at Fingal Head and on that point there are some native plants that actually have some little markers to show just what they are.

This tiny little flower is about the size of about a ten cent piece and is a plant lovingly titled "Pig Weed". The sandy colour is from the fact that it is a dune dwelling creeper type plant with these small pinky coloured flowers. The colour of the flower didn't give me enough contrast with the sandy colour, so I enriched it a touch.
NO! I hear you say! :2funny:

Anyway The Nature Series no. 33 is an Acrylics on 400 x 500mm Stretched Canvas.

Well, I went to the doctor to get my elbow checked out after bashing it at indoor soccer on Wednesday night. Doc thinks there is a little piece of floating bone or gristle in there. It's pretty swollen, but x-rays were inconclusive on the chip, but there is no fracture or break. Just have to watch it to make sure no infection sets in otherwise it will be antibiotics central for Batman! Dunnno how it can since there is no cut, but that was what he said. Lucky my GP is also a sports medicine doc huh?

Anyway, got home and produced this one after my exercise bike tonight. It is another from one of my own flower photos: The Nature Series no. 34. Acrylics on stretched canvas - 508 x 760mm. It's also on my website.

Lots of texture on this one, thick impasto. Luckily I smashed my left elbow, not my right!

Hi everyone

Here is the newest addition to the series. The Nature Series no. 36 - Acrylics on 760 x 760mm it's also been added to my website along with the new gallery of other Acrylics. These little flowers (about 25mm in diamerter) were on aplant in the neighgbourhood, I zoomed right in until there was 3 that I thought made a nice composition.

Well everyone,

The Nature Series no. 37 is now done. It is an Acrylics on 500 x 600mm double thick Stretched Canvas. It's also available on my website (link available under my avatar.)

It's not quite as dark as the image here. Unfortunately whenever I use a lot of my Alzarin, it is really difficult to get great photos because for some reason it always shows up shiny when you use it to mix reds, wines, purples etc. Anyway, the image gives a fair indication of what it looks like. I might try re-photographing it in the morning and seeing if more natural light may assist...

It is an Acrylics on 400 x 500mm Stretched Name, and it is the second one officially to gain a name - "Spring Star". I've come up with a list that needs a few gaps filled in and then I will post the full list here as an update. Then I'll have to update my website too... And add the pricing... And fill out the entry form for the competition for no 34 - "Paradise Colours". Lucky I'm still looking for work...  I am Mr Centrelink man, I am.

Well, the time has come for a new addition to The Nature Series. This time around we have another one where I never lifted a paint brush. My tools were colour shapers and painting knives.

#39 - "A Fine Romance" is an Acrylics on 500 x 600mm Stretched Canvas. This one has lots of textures.

Hi everyone,

Continuing on my The Nature Series, I have finished one I've been wanting to paint for ages and finally got around to it. This is a cool looking flower I found in the garden of a cafe we went to when we did one of the Photo Tours last year.

#40 - Red Spiked Flower is an Acrylics on 508 x 760mm Stretched Canvas. It's a lot more realistic than most of the rest, but still has a stylistic side to it.

:thankyou: Nolan. I did have a little variation, but the camera didn't pick it up properly. I have made some alterations to the flower now though to beef the variation up a bit - I've uploaded the altered version. The original photo made the flower look very flat - probably because I took it at around midday - lunch time was when we stopped off at the cafe. I think I missed adding in some shadows.
Doesn't look so "falt" now.  ;D

Hi everyone,

The next completed painting in The Nature Series is #41 - Grevillea. These trees are native to Australia and flower in a range of colours. This is based on a closeup of a bush in the grounds of the local TAFE school.

It is an Acrylics on 600 x 760mm Stretched Canvas.

Batman, a few years back (when we had time and money to travel) I used to love to take close up pictures of 'parts of flowers' that I found on our trips.  Your paintings bring me back to those happy care free days of my close up floral photography.  You too enjoy showing the 'detail' of a part of flowers, rather than the whole thing.  I really love your viewpoint and techniques.  I am truly :smitten:

Been a bit slack with my painting, however, I can now introduce the latest in The Nature Series!  :yippee:

#45 - Me Brain Hurts is an Acrylics on 500 x 600mm double thick stretched canvas. Believe it or not, this is actually based on a flower...

No such luck Nolan. I've been a bit down with this job hunting. If something doesn't happen really soon, I'm going to have to sell the house and get a rental. Lucky I have plenty of equity, but it's not something I really want to do.

mea,

My problem is I have plenty of cash invested in the house, but bugger all in my pockets. The welfare payments don't even cover the mortgage, let alone any other expenses. There is a 3 month waiver of mortgage payments I can apply for soon, but even after that the welfare payments dont cover all my expenses, when you take rates, water, electricity, telecoms etc.

I just want a job.

On the job front, it was just the application stage at this point. Good thing about it though is it is through a targeted agency though, so the chances are better than if the employer just goes to the market. Basically the agency refers you as soon as they think you are suitable, rather than the employer evaluating en masse.

What I failed to mention is that this was my first paid painting. My parents "commissioned" it at Xmas time after seeing the photo I had taken. Due to my financial situation they ended up paying my last quarterly electricity bill as a way to pay for the painting and hide the fact from the government that I had been paid.

So I guess that you technically could say I have finally sold a painting.

Unfortunately I can't advertise the fact on creativewithcolours.com (http://creativewithcolours.com) until such times as I have a new job. Our welfare system has eyes and ears everywhere...

It's ironic really. I'm not overly taken by the idea of selling my house, but if I did and started renting, it would immediately free up a LOT of cash that is currently tied up in the house. I could afford to rent a certain gallery (and yes there is one here) that could be used for a one man showing, and with almost 50 in the series now...

Mmm Nina. I saw a psychologist once who tried explaining "God" to me and something in me just couldn't be convinced. I have tried, but my practical head tells me "believing" is based on believe and if you don't "believe", then you don't "believe."

Somehow, the idea that I'm already painting okay enough stuff that people think it should sell, but just believing will make them start to sell, doesn't sit well in my logical head. After all, it's real people put their hands in their pocket to buy paintings - ones you can walk up to and actually physically touch and talk to and stuff.

:thankyou: mea, I took the photo last week, so I guess it is an Autumn bloom. Remembering my paintings really stretch the photos from the original - the flower is a lot deeper purple, but I needed to lighten it to show up against the dark background.
:thankyou: Sharon, I know they aren't lilacs, as I said I lightened up the flowers. I looked up some web colours and it is more like a blue violet in real life. But hey, artist's license...
:thankyou: Nina. No boy wonder didn't help. I've lived by myself for years - I don't know what ever happened to him... :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:

What I didn't mention was that as another experiment, there were no brushes involved - all paint was applied using a single piece of sponge about the size of a chicken egg.

The cupboard in one spare bedroom that is used as my computer room is full to not being able to slide the door open anymore without removing.

The other spare bedroom has the overflow of 10 complete (i.e. glossed and varnished) paintings and another ten in the process being glossed and varnished.

To convert an area under the house to suitable (i.e. raised off the concrete) would cost a couple of hundred - water gets in under the house in really heavy water. Unfortunately I don't have the cash right now to do it.

Luckily when I do, I have the handiness (dad was a builder before retiring, so I can knock this kind of shelving together) to do the job.

Also i am putting some not the walls, but that is getting short too...

Hey Batman,

There you are.  I was asking about you earlier today.

This looks like the flower of the "octopus" tree, a kind of rubber tree that grows here in Hawaii, usually along roadsides and hillsides.

Nice work, as usual.

I have a Twitter account but rarely ever post anything, maybe just a reply to what someone else has posted.  Same thing for Facebook.  But, because you have a "series" of paintings, both of those social media might be beneficial to you.  Seems to be working for Zilpa.

No worries Val. Depending on when I take the photo I get different results. When I am photographing them that late in the day (early evening) I have to use artificial light and to avoid flare I have to point the floor lamp away and it certainly messes with the colouration. With the days getting shorter, I need to use the light sooner in the day.

It was great in that using your finger meant that detail was practically impossible. Just the way I like it! And I'm just little kid inside really, so the finger painting idea appealed.

Before I started I wondered just how well it would turn out, but I think it went okay.

 :thankyou: so much Sally.

:tickedoff: Nolan. Car and streets - not a problem. Conversations with new people and convincing them how great my stuff is - not me. Probably also a strong contributing factor as to why I'm still single at my age.

Also, I found a site in my searching that gave some pretty damning stats about cold-calling. And it wasn't the only one. www.nomorecoldcalling.com (http://)

Batman - your talent for abstract/impressionism is wonderful. I agree with Nolan, take a few of the paintings in the series in person to the corporate sector - this is exactly what they love to hang in their lobbies/offices…Some places may want you to hang them on their walls on a temporary basis - it's a great way to gain exposure and possible future sales.  And you have to be assertive, even if it's not in your nature (pun intended since this is the Nature Series!)

You're really that good - now you need to let others know...

Looks like I am doomed then.

I took 7 full months to finally get a job. Yes I start next Monday. For a month. As a Software Tester (other stuff could follow, so it's a start.) But 7 months to sell myself in an industry I have worked in for 15 years. And the guy who recruited me was the guy who gave me my first development job 5 years ago and is a pretty good mate.

Selling to strangers in an industry I have never been involved in and know stuff all about - I don't now have the time.

There's a reason I prefer sitting behind a computer all day and letting my work do the talking you know.

In the work place, I have never won a higher position through an interview. It's only ever been because a position has been available and my reputation has gained me automatic appointment.

Maybe you need an agent who would work on a commission.  You have quite a few paintings so it might make it worthwhile.

Maybe advertise on Craig's List for someone.

Glad to hear about the new job.  Hope it leads to a more permanent one.

I've certainly got my fingers crossed too for something longer term - starting to run out of canvases! Sort of.

Here is the painting I completed today. This is #55 in "The Nature Series" it is called 'Fire or Flower?' It is an Acrylics on 508 x 609mm Stretched Canvas. 54 of the 55 have been completed since I left my job 8 months ago!!! :heeha:

We just had the International Fire Knife Dance competition in Hawaii.  Your painting reminds me of that.  Although, it does have an Oriental poppy feel to it, too.

I'll think on the interior designer thing...

Although, I would probably not send photos, just my business card which is emblazened with my website URL. We live in a digital world - I don't understand why people still insist on hard copy stuff. Especially stuff like this - I will be looking at their websites to see whether I should contact them. And the sites will probably give me an email address...

the problem is, it is easy to hit the delete button or just ignore the email, in person that is a lot more difficult
Title: Re: Continuation of "The Nature Series"
Post by: ImBatman on June 03, 2014, 08:03:14 PM
:thankyou: Danielle. I know what you mean - I initially was just numbering them, but Nolan said they need names if I intend to sell.

Nolan, I didn't mean making the initial contact by email, I was going to do mailout (physical) - at least then they have a business card with a URL on hand initially... I know, you can just throw that in the bin too, but eventually I might have to do the in person thing I guess. Now that I'm back to work, that will mean weekends though and doing something I detest.

Hi everyone,

Been a bit off with the painting of late. The short term contract ended and I am back looking for work again. At least I have my first in person formal interview on Thursday next week! Eight months it has taken. It'll be doing the stuff I did for ten years (Systems Analysis) before swapping over to the developer role.

Anyway, enough of that, here is my latest in "The Nature Series" this on is ##56 - My Betta Splendens" it is an Acrylics on 508 x 762mm Stretched Canvas.

For those who are not familiar with fishkeeping, a Betta Splendens goes by the common name of "Siamese Fighting Fish." It is the combination of a made up background and a reference photo of my little fishie.

Nice to see you back again, Imbatman, we missed you.

We have Siamese Beta fish here but, they seem to be more
fluorescent and leaning toward the purple hue.  I have nearer
seen one similar to the one in your painting. They definitely need
to be isolated, most pet store sell them in very small bowls (single)

Yours is probably very happy as it has a huge/whole tank to its self.

Good luck on your interview!!  You know what they say here " Break a Leg".

:thankyou: May Lynn, yeah there's lots of colours to choose from. They've been selectively bred over time. If you can believe it the original wild fish are a pretty plain if not ugly looking fish with a lot shorter fins that the ones we have today. They are a sort of greeny brown colour!

:thankyou: Val, I already have some thoughts for more like this. In my big tank I have Clown Loaches which make a bright subject, and Kissing Gouramies - that would make for an interesting one, also have another idea too... Need a job to keep the canvasses coming though.
