Title: LESSON #75 - Rose Archway
Post by: dennis on September 06, 2013, 10:06:30 PM
In order for me to easily find and answer queries about this Lesson I will appreciate it if everyone will keep these to this specific Lesson Posting only. This will also be of benefit to you as well in the future.  Thanks

 Looks like you may have skipped a couple Dennis..... but I do like the idea of a rose archway!  ;)
Title: Re: LESSON #75 - Rose Archway
Post by: dennis on September 07, 2013, 09:19:11 AM
Nope, not skipped any, all the others are here.
Nowadays when I add a lesson to the main List I add it here also in advance.

Why? Because some members start asking questions on the forum long before the lesson is due. So, when it is time for me to add it to the forum, my post is way down the list and gets lost and few get to see the post for the template or any comment I may make in that post.

Now my post will ALWAYS be the first post and minimizes the necessity for me to move and merge posts because some do not add the Lesson number to it.

:'( Sadly, I cannot access this class for I am being asked for a Serial Number and I haven't one, tried putting in my Order number/Receipt Number and ID but to no avail. Will have to wait for the replay. It would seem like it never "booked" the transaction even though I have been supplied with my receipt number. Anyway, I will wait for Nolan to get back to me.   Patricia

Can you believe it? I was already behind when Dennis started the masking fluid!  :2funny:   Anyway, I have no idea what colours Dennis used or where he put them. I just kept throwing paint on every time I heard a colour. I think I've developed a new style ..... mishmash painting!  :2funny:

Her ya go, such as it is.  ;D

Watch the replay in slow motion Val, it still has all the options for being a great painting!

 O0 Great start Val!

Jennylynn-your greens are great-you nailed the bushes!

Almost there Doina!  :)

I was the queen of smearing my hand in wet paint....I mean I WANTED moss on my fence!    I don't know why I have a big cauliflower for a bush group?

doina great start know this will be another great painting O0

Natalie I really do like this, as regards your "cauliflower"  a few dabs of greens in there and you wouldn't even notice it  O0

patricia so sorry you couldn't get into the class  :(

Wow - they all look great - even the WIPs!

Patricia - I got the same message, and then realized that for some reason it wasn't showing my profile.  I logged out and back in again, and that solved the problem.  But, I did miss the intro.  At least I hadn't planned to paint along.  So sorry you missed it, though.   :'(

I've also found that I can't have anything else running, no other windows open, while viewing the class, or I get even more buffering!  Plus, I think there are unseen "gremlins" at work in my WiFi sometimes!  Anyway, despite it all, it was a great class.  Now, I'm looking forward to the replay so I can see what I missed!   :)

Great work Jennylynn and Natalie. Val, your bushes llok great, and we'll be finishing ours once the replay is out. Somehow my picture is much lighter that it is in reality. It was taken under artificial light. Thanks everyone for encouragement.  :thankyou: Doina

Patricia,

I had this problem and Denise and Nolan worked on it until they figured out what went wrong.  They were able to open it eventually, but did give me the info for future classes. I had paid by credit card.  Since then, I have paid by PAYPAL and the class unlocks automatically.

Hope this helps you in the future.

       Well done everyone on your paint-a-long.  They all look wonderful and I am so sad that I wasn't able to participate.

Val your painting has great potential. It looks like it is going to be a knock out!! I love the light on top your your front tree/bush.  Good job so far.

Jennylynn, gorgeous as always, lovely combination of greens.

Doina a good start.

Natalie a lovely, lovely painting too.

Pat, I tried everything to no avail.  I logged in and out several times but got the repeated message. I then noticed that it said I still had to book the lesson when I had already booked and paid for it so there is something not quite right but Nolan will sort it out as he always does.

Anyway, I am looking forward to the replay so that I can do what looked like such an interesting and fun lesson.

:thankyou:  Mea for that information.  I also used a credit card as I always do but this is the first time I have had a problem.  However, when I booked the lesson I had a problem with the "View Cart" showing up on the screen every time I logged on. I contacted Nolan who said to just go in and delete the contents which I did and never thought another thing of it for it resolved the problem of the "View Cart" icon showing.  Anyway, Nolan will get back to me when he has a moment.  Thanks anyway for responding, much appreciated.

Val, nice beginning it looks like it will be great! (I like that green tape-mine is blue)
Jennylynn, very nice painting
Doina, good beginning-I find it easier with a replay
Natalie, I always say Have Cauliflower, Make Tree. Your roses are pretty

Well, I just got home from mothers and finished what was messed up. It is still sad, but loads better than it was.
I had to repaint my fence with white acrylic and then repaint with watercolor. I also made a tree in the back because it just didn't look right. This was a hard one to paint along and watch what Dennis was up to at the same time!!  :'(

Good job, Carol! You are being too hard on yourself! You did a great job on the shadows.

Have you, or anyone here, ever tried using watercolor ground to restore the white of the paper?   Daniel Smith has 3 different colors and I got a couple of free samples when I ordered from Merriartist.com.  They say can use it on different surfaces so you can paint watercolors on glass, canvas, wood, etc.  I think I'm going to experiment...

I'm sorry I couldn't make the class this week.  I will be ordering the next class, but I will be in Wawona, Yosemite next Sunday so I will not be able to do it live. I volunteer there.  Anyone need photos of REALLY BIG trees?

Beautiful paintings, everyone!

I really enjoyed this lesson - and it's timely because someone has asked me to paint a picture of their house and it has lots of vegetation like this one does.  I probably won't be painting it until the end of the summer, but it's sure nice to have had this practice opportunity! Any tweaks recommended? Thanks!

Very well painted
The only tweak I can see at the moment is to just darken up the depth of the bush just above the  fence top and fade it out upwards. That will give a lovely contrast between the white of the fence and the shadow of the bush O0

And you're right, Dennis - just a little darker color by the fence made a difference. Thanks!

Nice job Danielle!  Your sky is really pretty and the colors are great. The back tree has some white splotches on it. Not sure what those are. You did am excellent job of the flowers and leaves cascading over the left side of the fence. Perhaps you could have some leaves cascading over the right side and also have them poke through the fence. I really enjoyed this lesson!

Danielle,

The rose archway painting is lovely.  Nice work on the roof and windows, roses, lattice.  Agree with Sharon on the white spots on the trees.

You are so talented.

Danielle, a very lovely and lively painting    If my guess is correct you added some masking fluid in the tree area to simulate a "see-through effect" for the birds to fly through. Add some of the sky colour in them and then soften down the sharp edges caused by the masking fluid O0

:thankyou: Denise, Sharron, Tania, Mea and Dennis for the advice and encouragement.
Yes I did want to make some sky holes and they are big and I forgot to add a bit of leaves in them and I will soften the edges.    I will also add some leaves on the right side of the fence.  I value your advice and opinion.
 :thankyou: so much

 You and I have similar issues. On our paintings we need to reduce the urge to go dark to soon.  The first run through needs to be much lighter than we think it should be. The second and subsequent washes can take the values darker until everything looks right. I think we have an issue with water control too because the bleed greys out the bright colors and reduces detail.    Reduce the urge to paint wet into "super wet" when the lesson does not require it so that the details don't flow into each other after you lay the color down.  Sometimes I do not dry the paper like Dennis does with a hair dryer and then my details blur out as the color bleeds for the next hour on the damp paper. The trees and bushes were just painted with an over abundance of water is all.

Yes, watercolor does take some getting used to.  I still try to paint them as if I were using oils!

I would like to try this. I don't have much problem with drawing that photo. But I don't know what to do when coloring! I Don't know how to paint real pictures. Is creativity necessary? Or should it look exactly like the picture? What should I pay attention to? :(
