Yes Val, I do believe that Ottawa is decidedly colder than what we are here.  Anyway, it is just for the weekend so it shouldn't be too bad.  Patricia

Major internet problems here today. It was a real fight to get the challenges closed and winner(s) posted.
I sure hope I'll be able to get the class today. I tried playing a drawing video but it packed in after 17 seconds.  :'(

Dennis, I have signed up for today's class, but do not have any pastels, can I do the entire picture in watercolors, will you please give the colors to use for them?

Thanks Dennis--I learned so much about technique!!! Unfortunately my wc paper has almost no tooth so I just did straight pastel today on pastel paper.  I think the wc underpainting produced a prettier result.  So this is with my new old grummies and blocked in with hard pastels rather than wc.  Merry Christmas everyone!

     Lynn and Jill, lovely pastel  paintings.

:thankyou:  Val, had a lovely weekend in Ottawa and arrived back here just after 1.30 this afternoon, rushed upstairs hoping to get the reference drawing done but found my printer was on the blink so I had to just sit and watch Dennis' lesson which I really enjoyed and can't wait to tackle.  Ottawa, surprisingly enough was warmer than down here.  We have come home to frigid weather and my clever husband turned the furnace off before we left on Friday so our house is like a freezer!!!  I am literally sitting on top of an electric heater trying to "thaw" out.

:thankyou: Jill, had a great weekend and a safe return journey .... all highway travelling which was so easy especially since the roads were clear and no snow.  We are expecting snow over night so I think we made it back just in time.

Lynn and Jill, your paint-alongs are superb! There is NO WAY I could paint that fast,    but I took 4 pages of notes as I watched and am now busy with rendering the painting.

I suspect my Strathmore 400 series doesn't have quie the tooth I need, but we'll see.

Thank you, guys! I think I'd like to try this again on my Arches block (11x14) instead of the 9x12 Strathmore 400 series, a paper I tend to use more for practice--it's not my favorite. The Arches seems to have more tooth. I am also struggling to get enough intensity from my inexpensive pastels, which may contain more filler and less pigment.

Lydia, Susan nice job.  O0
Bhavna you also did a nice job. I think your water in the stream looks like it is going too roll out of the banks. I think it's because of the direction of the lines, they have a curve to them.
They need to be more parallel. Hope this helps. Love the sky colors and the rest of it.  O0

Bhavna--I love your greens and your shrubbery
Susan--Yours really shows the beauty of the watercolor showing through.  Nice mountain.
Lidya--I like the fanciful look of your trees!!!

KUDDOS to: Lynn--gorgeous painting; to Jill--love the water so realistic; to Bhavna--colors are very nice; to Susan--very nicely done; to Lidiya--I think Van Gogh when I look at your painting. (one of the old masters if not he)
Everyone did a nice job. I didn't do this one.

This was fun, I need to work on my tree masses to get them believable.  I really like the control/lack there of with pastels, it connects the other side of my brain me thinks!

:thankyou: for the warm support!

Dennis I did the day lilies one prior to this, but this was the first landscape (and really, my first landscape period in color anyways).  I want to do some larger canvases now, small is so much harder, a hint of color here, a suggestion of shape there, it has it's place I know but larger will allow me to work easier with my flintstone mitts!

Dennis,
I have only WaterColors and NO pastels.  :'(
I decided to do this one anyway.  I painted along with you.     Just didn't get it photographed untill today.   :coffee:

It was fun trying to keep up with you and picking my paints to match your pastel colors, as much as I could with what I had.  :pullhair:  :death:

My husband loves it and made me frame it.  I am not sure I would have done the frame otherwise.   :-\

Sharon,

Yes, the tree on the left is so dramatic.

Like the way you varied the different tree/shrub groups.

Is the dark line along the right side of the stream too rigid (except in the middle near the big rock)?  Maybe some lighter spots or a break in a couple places.

:thankyou: Robin and Danielle. I forgot to tell you all what happened with this painting. I had it about half way done, when I made a mistake and the only thing that I could do was wash it all off and start over. After I dried the paper I knew I lost all of the sizing off of it. So I used that Daniel smith watercolor ground on the paper. Let it dry. Then started again. What I learned about this watercolor ground is you have to use a lot more water than usual. But it did work. Hope this helps.
