Title: Fixative for Pastels
Post by: Tousabella on December 03, 2013, 04:34:01 PM
Hi...Is there a good Canadian brand of fixative to get?  Home Hardware? Canadian Tire? Walmart?
I'm stuck.  I have a fix for acrylics, but it's permanent and, I think, kinda like varnish! So, that's a no-no.
Any suggestions from the Canucks?
Thanks, guys n gals.

Thank you so much, girls. I live in a small city, but all they have for an "art store" is a small corner in a stationery store, and prices twice as much as anywhere! That's why I wondered about hardware stores.
Thanks again.

I've heard hairspray can be used but I've never tried it. Maybe you could do a test panel?

I use Krylon Workable Fixative, but it is very poisonous and stinky. I have to spray it outside, then put the piece in the garage to dry and out-gas. I do not use it very much, my can is about 18 years old, I got it when my 21 year-old was a baby.  Other than the smell, it is made to not turn yellow as others do with age and you can work over it.

Dear Bella1;

I use the same Krylon  workable fixative that Alice does.   In Canada I purchase it from Opus.ca they are on the
net and also have stores in BC and Alberta. I paid $8.70 Cnd. for an 11 oz. can.  I've just ordered some, they also, have free shipping until Dec. 6 on orders of 75.00 or more ( use their 1-800 number to order).  Right now they have Rembrandt soft pastels on sale for cheaper than Amazon. You can also get your pastel paper from them.

I you have a Michaels near you, try them, but, remember to go to their  Canadian website and print yourself
the current coupons.  This will save you 40% or 50% on at least one item.

Thank you, Mae n Alice.  I didn't think about the 'smell' or gasses....(I have COPD and am on oxygen). I'll have to do some BIG research on what's in the can!  LOL
Thanks for your help.
