I m so looking forward to this :smitten: , I really hope I will be able to watch. Back in 2012 I have drawn one onion,

and had so much fun, but did it on my own. Watching Nolan and drawing three Onions will be a whole lot more fun. I'll try to get the template right, and hopefully I can draw along..and when not...I'll just wait for the replay.
Nolan,  :thankyou: so very much for these free lessons...I really love to pick up the pencils again.

Thank you so much Nina and Sarah, for your wonderful and encouraging comments I will need it  :) .
This onion was done righthanded, like all my former drawings, but doing these new drawinglessons lefthanded is a great challenge. I just draw the template, took me 'hours', the rest should be 'easy' :2funny: . We will see what kind of mess I 'll produce. Hopefully I will see you tonight

Riya. You are such an inspiration to us all.  Looking forward to seeing your new onions.  It might take you a little longer however,  my bet is that they will be as good as the first ones if not better.

Jill, Doina and Mea, thank you so very much for your wonderful and encouraging comments.  I think the new onions will be just fine, I am confident that I manage to make a decent drawing. I have more controle on my lefthand then before, I even learnd to peal the patatoes lefthanded..without cutting of some fingers  ...even it sometimes didn't needed much more  :2funny:

Below is my draw-along sketch. I stopped drawing, after I was able to see that I can do it. For this I used a lower quality of paper (65lb). Now I am re-starting on a regular 90lb drawing paper. Doina

Hi all here is what I got achieved this morning (well morning for me anyway  ;D ) during the live lesson.

Couldn't comment on live fee but I have now sorted that    O0  :cheering: :cheering:

I can see that my little flap of peeling skin on the left needs some more work as it is lost but I am feeling positive at this point.  :yippee:

Karen and Doina they look great  O0 :twothumbs:  Karen you can really see the layers on your one.  Doina I haven't tried with different qualities of paper, does it make a big difference?

Thanks, Nolan, for posting the final picture. It's easier when you can "see" the tonal range, rather than only seeing what you are putting on paper. I got lost a couple of times ... lost lines, heck...I took a wrong turn!!  LOLOL
Thanks.

Well, I did it  :heeha: I had fun last night, couldn't chat because I don't have, and want, a Google account. Had some diffuculties by holding my pencils, had to turn the paper almost up side down :2funny: . But I think I didn't draw that bad at all...Practised before on the chart, that one is almost done too.

What do you think? I did work on it a little more last night and some this morning, so Thank you so much Nolan, for uploading your finished drawing, (and did see the cute little doggie again  :smitten: ), that will help a lot.

Lisa and Doina, thank you so much for the wonderful comments :flowers: :1hug: . I had fun but a hard time too :2funny: these 'stupid' pencils felt sometimes so  :tickedoff: in my hands, but I just kept trying, the biggest challenge was not to press too heavy on my pencils. I just finished my chart and sphere, looks so much better then my first left attempt in 2013 :smitten:

    Well, all you ladies need a huge applause for the wonderful onions that you did.  Karen, yours was the first out and I was astounded, excellent onion.

Doina yours is looking fantastic so far, as is Lisa's and Riya, you are one special lady being able to draw so very well with your left hand .... better than what I can draw with my right hand.  You are indeed an inspiration to us all.

Good job everyone.

great work guys.

What I am seeing that many can fix is the backgrounds - even mine - make the background tonal value more even and use strokes in the same direction, eg. 45 degrees, then more strokes at a 90 degree angle to that

:thankyou: Nolan I was wondering how to improve that area.  I will try going back over it and see if it makes a difference at this stage.  Might be too late?

A quick question to artists using pencil... What paper do you use?  So far I have only used standard 80gsm copy paper and I notice on some of the drawings uploaded that my shading seems to have less texture than others.

Appreciate any comments.

I have been using for sketches Canson 85gsm=65lb, then for better drawings I used Art Alternatives 110gsm = 75lb,until I found Pentalic Meridian drawing, 147gsm=90lb. I love working on it. Is strong, not to rough but not to flat, and I can use the eraser more than on the others. I also use sometime the "Artist Loft" paper that I purchased for watercolor. For watercolor is the worst, but the back side is good for drawings (B&W or color). Doina

NOLAN, re the background it seems that from the reference photo it looked like possibly dark shadowy shapes behind the onion and garlic.  How to do tonal values that don't have a wild haphazard look is maybe what we should try to do, is that right?  Something eye pleasing that goes along with the beautifully drawn onion and garlic.  :)

LADIES, do you know how to buy good garlic? I tell my husband who does most of the shopping (because he did night shift for many years and shopped and I had a day job) that the best garlic is fresh by its firmness and is a tight and smooth bulb.  If it's starting to get loose and open up, it is already too old and baby plants are starting to grow with a thin green stem inside each bud and most of the flavor will be gone.  When I have too much garlic, I separate the pieces and freeze them.  Hope Nolan has eaten his garlic by now!  ;)

Lisa, re paper- I found that 20# copy paper works best for me.  The graphite pencils glide over the paper easily since it's not a textured surface.  Since the onion and garlic needed a smooth look the copy paper worked well.  For the dog drawings I used Strathmore and other drawing pads 80, 88# dry media paper; dry and oil pastels Canson Multi Media 98#.  Keep up your good work!

 :thankyou: Liz, Mea and Sarah.

Mea my background looked all over the place and Nolan suggested I do it at a 45 degree angle and again at 90 degrees to that, I wasn't 100% sure I went the correct way with the second direction but it made a huge difference.  I love your curly leaf on the right I had real trouble trying to get some kind of curl in it.  O0

Liz, Lisa, Mea and Harald you have all done such an awesome job on the onions   , and such an inspiration. I really have to try and get these done, but it is hard right now  . Done too much lefthanded lately, so have to take a rest and righthanded, ...well it still isnot that great even I can do a little like knitting, but just for less then an hour.
But maybe I will pick up the pencils this afternoon and will try to get some more 'colour' on my onion and garlic :smitten: .

Harold. . . yay! How nice to see you here in the onion patch!!! How are you? Your drawing looks good, Do you think that your camera has washed out some of the depth?

Steven. . . Nice still life. . . . how did you get that sepia tint over everything?  I'm back to my precious pencils after a short foray into the bewildering world of pastels. . . .  :help:

Riya . . you are so right. that is why I have abandoned the camera in favour of my scanner. Much better results every time. . . . with little or no thinking on my part!! ;D

Good job on the onion/garlic, Steven.

Now I see how the crackling piece of outer skin on the far right should have looked on mine.

Is the sepianess just an effect of the camera?

The sepia effect is just bad camera work, I'm ready to give up and just scan, at least that way I don't get the distortions and "sepia"

Here's my drawing. This was fun..I got in the zone and wasn't aware what was going on around me. The garlic was a challenge, I was afraid I would get it to dark. Kept pulling out my tonal chart for comparison.

Nolan, I got a lot out of the Let's Draw course, but watching you do these drawings has shown me where I am making my errrors. I pulled out an old, old sketchbook and saw errors  in shading.  :thankyou:

That looks great Steven you can really see the layers of skin peeling away.

Peggy looks good, it almost looks like you have a sun ray shining down on the onion  :) very cool.

I've thought about using my scanner but my desktop is sooooo slow  :pullhair: and my iPad is so quick that I am usually way too impatient.  What is a 2 min job on my iPad takes 20mins on the computer and that is before attempting to get the scanner to work correctly  :o

Question about the upcoming rose live lesson.  I am not sure if I will be called into work often until the day of due to being a reliever.  So I am not sure if I will make the live show.  If I want to see it later do I still book a spot or does that take someone else's chance?  And then how do I make it so I can get it later?  Sorry being such a newbie here

Thanks

Lisa,

I always buy something I want when it is going to be live, even if I won't be there to see it.  It gets loaded in your "booked" classes, so you can few it as many times as you want after the replay comes out (usually a couple of days).

Hope that helps.

This being a paid class, you will have to book it, whether you watch live on line or not. By booking you will not take anyone space. Then, when the replay is available ( about 2 days after the live one) you'll have to "click" on Paint Basket TV, then click again on "view my unlocked classes" - green button. Then you'll click on "pencil drawings" if you have other classes, in other media. Slide down on that page until you find the replay. At this time you can open the class as many times as you need. You also can run and stop the class as you go. Hope I was able to help you, Doina

Lisa, I too book classes I want when they go live, even if I will not be able to attend the live viewing.  You may wonder why we would do this.  In the past (I am assuming now too) the live class has been at a discounted price from the class offered later on.  So I save a few dollars ordering the live version, and of course also get the replay along with it at no extra cost.  Win/ Win   :yippee: :yippee:

Finally finished my onion.  I have to say I had great difficulty with this one.  Had difficulty using the chisel point.
Could not keep the chisel angel right.  Found myself wearing away one side or the other.  Everytime I picked a pencil up I had to make some adjustment. I just could not lay a line of shading where I wanted it.

it isn't an easy drawing, but you don't get better practice for spotting your tonal values, and looking at your drawing, the practice has paid off.

Patricia and Doina Thank you so very, very much for your wonderful and encouraging comments, it is so much appriciated. I am so happy that I am able to draw with both hands, my right wrist still gives a lot of problems, so I am really happy that my drawings look this good, this way my wrist can heal on a slow pace, without me being frustrated by not drawing.
It is going a little slower then 'normal' but I love it to see how much progression I have made in such a short time. These last two weeks really made a difference, and that awesome gift was the best that could happen. After the spoon I'll start the Landscape drawing course, so I can go on for a few weeks.

Well done onion and garlic choppers! Not a weeper on the chopping block. Riya, you are keeping up with the best of the 'bunch' here, honey. Time to hitch up those britches and call yourself "artist" again. Just think, by the time your right is thoroughly recovered, you will be totally ambidextrous. So many artists suffer from shoulder pain, if not frozen shoulder. You'll be able to avoid that by switching back and forth. I will watch and try this lesson. I am intrigued by the background, which would be a good skill to have. But first will finish my son's dog. I'm about twenty hours in, I'd guess, and have almost as many left. They are getting anxious to have it.

Riya, a great artist friend of mine in South Africa, Lois Audie, who is one of the top artists in SA,  is completely ambidextrous. It was amazing to watch him paint a large oils or Acrylic painting with a brush in each hand and you could not tell the difference between the left and the right half of the painting.

You are well on your way to becoming like him    I can't even do what you do with your left hand .....yet O0

Sarah, Thank you so very much for youre wonderful, and warmhearted words, they really mean a lot to me. I am really looking forward to see your dogdrawing, I am sure it will be awesome.Thank you so much for giving me the feeling back from being a artist again.

Sue and Jill thank you so much for the very kind words,

and Dennis, thank you so very, very much for the wondeful story and encouraging comment. I think it would be really wonderful drawing and painting with both hands on the same level at the same time.
I am not there yet, but in a year...or two,...three ... I still have to find the most relaxed way of holding my pencils... but I really love it to be able to switch between hands without much problems.

I think to compare where I am now, I'll draw one of the drawings I did for Let's Draw again.
I am still surprised to see how good these onions look, I just picked up drawing again two weeks ago, after not drawing for almost a year. The last drawing was the ball again and te dragonfly, so not much practise, just these three free lessons from Nolan and your Pastel lessons....I still can't believe that I was able to draw this fast and still good...I really thought I would end up with a childlike drawing.

Dear Tousabella;

It may not be the pencils you may have to have a lighter touch.

As Nolan has says  'let the pencil do the work'; you are only the guide
to where you want it to go.  Us a very very very light touch at first and
as you see needed tonal differences then and only then increase the pressure.

If you are pressing and can't achieve the darkness or lightness you desirer then
move up or down to the next pencil level.  Hope this helps!

Sounds like you need to have more choices of pencil besides 2H and HB.

With more pencils to choose from, you should be able to do it more easily.

Bella, maybe this paper has more texture that the previous? Seeing "bits" of paper shining through is normal and nothing to worry about - unless you want perfect coverage. In that case you need to use a paper with no texture at all
Title: Re: 3 - How to draw Onions
Post by: Tousabella on February 15, 2014, 10:25:17 PM
Thank you, Nolan.  I wanted to keep this course contained in my sketch book, so I've done all of it in there. My balls were my own mistake of not 'rounding' the tones so that they were one.
I did the spoon in my book, and it is fine.
Is my shading okay?  I can relieve some of the shading where there is the highlight with my eraser, but it seemed very dark. (It is the same color as the picture that I keep comparing to). Maybe it's just me cuz this is a little more advanced than before.
Title: Re: 3 - How to draw Onions
Post by: GailBrown on February 16, 2014, 12:02:20 AM
Hi there.  Maybe keep going.  Once there are more marks on the paper, you will notice that the darks don't become so noticeable.  Right now there is a lot of white paper, so the darks may appear too dark.  Don't be so hard on yourself, just keep drawing, its not a test, and there is no perfect solution.  You will find the right pressure and touch as you go along.

Thank you, Nolan.  I think all the free lessons were very good and I loved doing them.  I have always found shadows hard to do and feel I have made good progress with you.  I liked how you explained the use of the different hardness of the pencils and when to use them.  The tonal charts were helpful also.  I have already paid for drawing classes at my local community college starting in March.  It is only a 5 week course so I am sure I will be back!  Since I started drawing with you, I did not have time for watercolor painting and I miss it.  So, I am going to sign up for the weekly watercolor painting classes with Dennis.  Thank you for your encouraging comments on my drawings.

Thanks to all the positive replies, drawing friends.........Nolan, LOL, the wobble is due to bad photography...I realy struggle to take proper pics. The light always seems to be falling @ the wrong angle....any suggestions.... :help:

the wobble was because the background contour was following the shape of the objects. Now that you have straightened that top "line" where the pencil ends, it is spot on O0

Hi all

Well I was hoping to get this one and the rose done today, but we ended going for a few hours lunch in the park, games and duck feeding with my niece and a walk around the creek system that winds in the huge reserve taking photos of ducks, swans, lakes, streams bush land etc. I did however manage to get the onions lesson completed.

For feedback I think the shadows, especially under the right hand side leaf, seem to need a little more blending they seem to stop too suddenly.  Love the looking in effect you have  :)

Sherri,

Your onion/garlic drawing is good.

I found that blending the pencil marks with a tortillion (or even a Q-tip) makes the painting look less scratchy.

Thank you Val!
Yeah, I did drive it! Arghhhhh   6 miles until I was told the further I drive the more damage will occur. So I sought help in Facebook. I drove to local garage who ended up being a past friend. He charged £30 to drain it. It took about 4 hours to sort. I then got a large canister and went to get some diesel in the car. After putting this is the Motorhome I then returned to fill up.
I'm pleased to say, it drove perfect and off to Soutport we went for what turned out to be a fabulous time for my 50th Birthday!  :yippee: :yippee:

So now I'm back home with tears of joy, I need tears from Onions!  ;D

I've drawn the outline of the Onion and Garlic using the iPad. So this makes it a digital using the 6b pencil tool.
I'll do the drawing as the lesson requires in pencil when I get home but, for now, I'm just getting some practice in!

Oh Val! I'm in tears but not from Onions! I want to get on with them but you'd never believe what's been going on:
I just got back from the Hospital after I lost feeling in my right arm from severe pain in my spine! Diagnosed as spurs squashing the nerves that may need surgery later if it gets worse.
All this is as a result of a vicious circle of poor sleep. Sue's snoring caused me continual loss of sleep that lead to me over-eating (strange I know but, I can't stop eating when I'm tired). This lead to my weight going up. That lead to me exercising excessively to try stop the weight gain. This has lead to arthritis in my feet and today's spinal problems, all because my body hasn't been able to heal. I've also got gastric reflux as a result.

Seriously, I never knew a partners snoring could have such bad consequences for my health. My Doctor has asked Sue to call to see him about ways to treat snoring. In the mean-time, I'm 'sleeping' in another room after taking a regular concoction of medication! Codeine, Cocodamol, etc.
So, once I can hold my head up without severe pain, I'll continue. (pain relief at the hospital is working tonight!).
I'll post a photo of my messy new art room set-up soon (I tried to post it from York during week but, it wouldn't work via mobile phone).
Oh, then I'll continue with these Onions!

Aw Tony...if only I'd known. I wouldn't have been so hard on you...highly unlikely, but it's the thought that counts!  ;)

I truly am sorry for your pain and discomforts. I sincerely hope another course other than surgery can be found. Do be wary of those painkillers, they can lead to more troubles than one might suspect.

At least now I know who to blame for my up and down weight variances!  >:D
 I shall have to banish Lloyd to sleeping in the trees with the monkeys upon my return!  ;D

Ah Val! You are such a sweetie!  :1hug: :knuppel2:
You'll be pleased to know, today I'm beginning to feel a bit better!  :yippee:  Constant pain is starting to ease but my fingers are still numb. Clearly the trapped nerve and bone spurs won't budge.
I've ordered a Inversion Table to decompress my spine! Have you ever heard of one? It's like a torture chamber gadget!  :crazy2: :D
Anyway, I haven't done the Onions but, I did sit down for 20 mins just to draw something free-hand. I just had to do something to get going!

It's just a quick sloppy drawing of a building I took a photo of in York. I may draw it detailed but, I've got too much work to catch up with so, I'll probably leave it with this rough sketch and get on with my Onions for this thread:

Ah Mea! Thank you but, it's nothing serious. It was a loose sloppy drawing just chosen at random to get me back to drawing. I've got lots of serious work lined up waiting and this will probably go in the bin!
I was astonished at how my patience has taken a knock. I'm returning to my keeping focused now and getting on with my Onions!

LMHO!  :2funny:  Joy is a proper flappy chappy!
The York pic has been binned! I'll be doing it again though  ;)  but only after I've done the onion drawing for this thread. I'll post the York pic to a new thread once I start it.
PS. My back pain and finger numbness remains despite me buying an Inversion Table (You lay on it and gradually tilt backwards until you are virtually upside down....with a blue head as blood rushes to send 'ya spinning dizzy! Shame the York pic got binned, glad you'll be doing it later though. It's a very nice scene.

You lay on it and gradually tilt backwards until you are virtually upside down....with a blue head as blood rushes to send 'ya spinning dizzy! (It gives relief all the time I'm upside-down but, results in nausea all day!
Anyway, back to my Onions...

Are you trying to tell me you're a blue-blood now? Right then your Lordship  ::)  we shall look forward to whatever you can manage. You might want to try adjusting your inverted time a bit, might help keep the nausea to a minimum. Sincerely hope you can get put to rights soon. Cheers love, just a thought ...try and keep the pints to a minimum before inverting yourself, eh?  ;)

I fished out the York sketch and used a Art Pen and water brush to slop some rough tonal colour on! Added a frame after using a sepia fx and whalla! Turned it into something better! I won't post it here so as to keep in line with the thread. Its on my gallery.
Now back on with my Onion drawing. (I'm in the car with my art gear at the moment!)

 :thankyou: everyone! ?

Mea Natalie is correct!! The sepia impressions are due to taking the pics late last night or should I say in the wee hours of the morning (no flash and very low lighting in the room)

I usually take them during the day in natural light but the "mood struck" to take pics and upload everything I've done this past week late last night so I just went with the flow (of my mood) and actually kinda like the sepia effect!  :yippee:

You can still increase the contrasts some more O0
then also be careful of pressing too hard when you transfer the template, you don't want dents in the paper

Good job on the onion and garlic.  Fun subject.

The very center of the garlic looks too round; needs to be blurred bit and less rigidly shaped.

Good effort.

Good work on the onion and garlic.  Lots of texture with your shadings.

I notice the blue in the background on the right.  Did you try a watercolor wash or is it a reflections that the camera picked up?  I kind of like it that way.

Elize,

Good on the onions and garlic!  The background doesn't do them justice, though.  I personally hate doing dark backgrounds on a drawing - hard to make them look attractive.

Hmmm, other than cross-hatching, does anyone have a good suggestion for dark backgrounds?

I as usual enjoyed this class , each time  I learn a little more.

The background looked smoother until I uploaded it onto the computer so will have to have a re-look at it. The small garlic clove on its own looks like its not sure what it wants to be :) :)

The background looking fine.  Both onion and garlic are well drawn, although the inside of the garlic could use some more darks.

Here's my try at the onion & garlic still life.

I didn't follow Nolan's class exactly. The major differences is in the background and foreground. All the graphite work was 98% done with hatching....very time consuming. The background is charcoal and some carbon pencil. The remainder is all graphite. Since the garlic is really pale by nature, I used a lot of 5H and 2H pencils. I also used HB and H pencils and in a couple of small spots I tried 9xxB graphite.....which is mostly graphite with some carbon in it.

I drew this on Bristol Board with the smooth texture. I don't really like this paper for graphite work; it's more suited to pen and ink. Doing charcoal on it was a bear. I found that a really smooth paper for graphite work that suits me better is the Arches hot-pressed watercolor paper...the back side.

Anyway, it took a while to do this as I was experimenting a lot. I learned a bunch. Hope you like it. :)

Steve, you have done a really good job on this drawing.  O0 I like the table cross hatching and all the details much. I just miss a little bit darker shadow at the root on the last onion skin on the right.

An excellent drawing Steve so much work on the background has paid off in showcasing the Onion and Garlic

Thanks,  Win and Sarlota.

Sarlota, the cast shadow on the far right is interesting. The reference photo showed it being considerably lighter than the other shadows. These were photographed under a very strong light. Hence the well defined cast shadows. So I assume that the far right shadow is being lightened by light passing through the translucent onion skin. Thanks for pointing it out, though. :)

Wow, Steve.

The paper thinness of the peelings is incredibly well done.

The shapes are beautifully drawn.

Fabulous job on blending.

Love the smooth black background.

Your hatching is so fine that it is almost undetectable.

Super wow.

Thank you very much, Mea! Yes, the hatching and the blending with only the pencil was very time consuming. Not that I'm complaining; I just didn't realize how long it would take. :)

fantastic job Steve :congrats:

I too miss a little extra contrast on the shadow side of the peeling skin to the right of the onion - that darkness lifts the onion itself up in the same way as the shadows on the table do O0

Thanks for your criticism, Nolan! Now all I have to do is pry the drawing away from my wife to make the adjustment. She decided she liked it well enough to frame and hang in our living room. :)

if it is framed already, then leave it and remember for next time O0 you don't want to upset the boss :-\

The shapes are really well drawn.  BUT, like most of us when we started, you seem afraid of the dark.  Go dark, young man!  Check your darkest spot against the reference photo and go from there.

So happy to see you are posting your work.

You are on the right course to better drawing.  Keep at it.

Mea,

Thanks! I had actually thought I'd gone to dark in some spots, but I suppose contrast is the name of the game with pencil drawing.

I think the photo came up a little lighter than the drawing itself, I might try one with my DSLR and see if it's any better.

But, I certainly will try to make my darks darker in my future work!

Thank you so much Mea. It's actually a real pleasure for me to be able to post drawings and get feedback from all of the art veterans on this site!

Jon:  You have done a great drawing of the onions.  Your tonal values are good you just need to go darker.  That is what we all need when we start. darker, darker.
