     WOW, Jennylynn, a fantastic glass.  You did a great job of the shading. My only criticism would be that the base is slightly off center or not quite round but that is easily fixed. The glass looks so realistic and I think you did a darned good job.   Can't wait for the replay to do the lesson.  It looks so interesting as they all are.  Anyway, you can be proud of yourself for you did a fine job for sure.

super job Jennylynn, well done :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

It is just the base that is a little off  - on the bottom left hand side move it up. On the bottom right hand side move it down. Ttry to get symmetry between the top and bottom halves when you stand back.
I know the base is not easy, but you can do it O0

:thankyou:  patricia your comments are always welcome  O0  isn't it annoying that when you post your picture your mistakes are staring you in the face  :(  but will definitely rectify  :thankyou:

:thankyou:  Nolan did notice the base after I posted  :(  but will definitely put it right  O0

I am posting this but not happy with the camera rendition.   :knuppel2:
My drawing looks much lighter and nicer than what one can see here.
I do think however that I could have started with a darker background, but hurried to try and catch up with Nolan, so its a bit light.  NOT this Light though

See I really didn't want to post the Picture    :2funny:

Well done Sue and Carol
Carol, as you started off with a light background, you will need to add the missing shadings into the glass in order to give yourself enough contrast for the highlights to show

Yes, Jennylynn, I know how frustrating it is when you take the picture and see what things you could change but it is all a learning experience and besides, you have done a marvellous job as always and the little problem is easily fixed so no worries.  Overall, as I said, you did a splendid job as always.

Sue and Carol, a good job done too.

Jill, I think yours deserves a special mention though, it is better than mine :cloud9:

Marie - You can use charcoal, but it would not be my first choice - I would rather just scrape the graphite from one of your pencils. The only reason I used the graphite pencil was to get a lot of graphite dust as quickly as possible for the class

I think you did wonderfully on your goblet - especially the top part.  The stem is a bit unsure of itself, though.

I hope to do this one soon.  You have all done so well with it.

Title: Re: 5 - How to draw glass
Post by: MSWcrane on February 24, 2014, 06:48:02 PM
Cyril, I think your highlights are good.   O0

Where I see a problem is the actual stem of the glass is not straight, the right side seems to go in a bit, making it looks off.  Also on the left side of the stem the very bottom curves in.  These two problems make your glass look wobbly.  Straighten the stem of the glass and it will be fine.

There are actually very few sharp edges in the reflections, that is why I kept saying to look out for them. As long as there are a few you are safe, and you do O0

It seldom happens that I have a sleepless night,  normally I would start cleaning cupboards at that time of night.........BUT last night I start drawing on the glass and couldn't stop till it was done...the first time in my life that I enjoyed waking up in the early morning hours.......think I'm HOOKED.... :painting:  Thanks Nolan for presenting the practical drawings so brilliantly and to all the forum members for cheering all the drawings....Its so great to be a part of the world of artists.......

Mea i was again looking at your glass, there is one little thing you should correct, i did not see it at first.  The thick white  line on the right upper side of the glass should not be continuous from back rim to front rim. You could make a little line in the front rim to seperate it from the back part and not make that line in one strock off set it a bit.   Hope that make sence to you.
It is just that we do not know which rim is the front or the back one.
I still think that it is a great glass.

Post by: Bev S. on June 05, 2014, 09:45:05 PM
Yep, Danielle is quite right, Mea. . . . I was looking at your glass again and I see exactly what she is saying, Just draw the rim of the glass through the beautiful white streak you have down the right (our right) side of the glass. That way we see both inside and outside. . . .just a very little tweak to an already terrific drawing!! O0 O0 O0

You have done  this glass beautifully Mea, I have to a agree with Danielle about the rim of the glass. I think this has been a common problem with this glass tho. Maybe Nolan hasnt noticed as I think his glass is the same. Maybe I need glasses :2funny:

O0 O0 Super, another lovely wine goblet to add to our collection! Sherri. . I agree that the base should be larger, not a difficult fix. And you have done the same thing Mea did. . . again, not a difficult fix. At the top right hand side (our right) your beautiful highlight comes down over the rim of the glass and it should go down the back (or the inside) of the glass. You need to draw in the rim of the glass again and shade it as you have the rest of it. It's necessary to see the whole rim of the glass as it goes around to the back. I hope this helps, I did the same thing the first time and it's really not a difficult thing to fix.  :)

 :thankyou: folks!

Yup Mea I gave it a good try ...  and totally agree it is very challenging to get it symmetrical!

I googled symmetry and this is what Wikipedia has to say (the first line anyway):

"in everyday language symmetry refers to a sense of harmonious and beautiful proportion and balance"

hmmm no coincidence that my drawing is a bit "off" ... pretty cool though ... for me I see how it is simply reflecting back to me my own desire to continuously create more and more harmony beauty and balance in my own life!

Yup so interesting how the pencil and pastel courses are so very therapeutic and healing for me right now!

It truly is amazing all the different emotions that are surfacing with each lesson I do.

I also find it fascinating that some old childhood issues that I thought I'd dealt with are also bubbling to the surface!

I am grateful for this as it gives me the beautiful opportunity to see my past in a whole new way ya know from a whole new loving perspective.

And here I thought I just signed up for art lessons! Who woulda thought it would turn into a beautiful healing journey as well!

So so so grateful for all the healing that has taken place deep within me this past month since joining PB and ever so grateful for this wonderful PB community filled with such loving kind and ever so supportive souls! Thank you all so much! ?

I did the wine glass almost a year ago.  One of my favorite lessons.

Your glass is a valiant attempt.  One side just got a little out of control, that's all.  The rest of the glass looks great.

I find that if I go back to the forum messages on each lesson and take a look at what everyone else did and the comments on them, then I can do a better job on mine.

Liana,

Great job - love how you got that curved down look at the bottom of the stem.

I think a tiny erasure at the top right  where the stem meets the bowl will make it fit more centered on the stem.

Otherwise, I am filling it with glowing compliments.

Welcome to the PB family.

Looks like you are off to a good start with the drawing of the wine glass.

Fill it with a Pinot Noir and I'll join you for a drink.

Not satisfied at all, with my glass. I would have to do it again soon. I didn't have the reference picture to look at, but I will get it very soon :) until then I would like some tips on what to have in mind the next time I try it :)

I know that Some of the highlights etc. is way off, but hope it will get better when I have something to look at :)

Ann-Mari,

This does not look bad at all.  You did a great job on the shine.

I think you have done an excellent job with something so new.   Look how much better it is than the glass you drew just a few days ago. Isn't it a fun lesson?  One of my favorites!

 Keep at it.

Latti,  your glass is well drawn.  Nice reflections.  Just check the base. It looks a bit narrow on the right side.

mea you are very right about the difference between this one and the one on the let's draw course!  :) I liked the lesson very much, so it dosn't bother me to take it again and try and improve even more!  ;D

Latti, looks as though you have the basics for this one down cold.  O0   Just a matter of proper perspective/shaping and your next one will be super realistic!  :heeha:   Very well done. Keep it up.

Latti you did a great glass it looks like cristal it shine so much, :yippee:
the only thing that you could do is at the base of the left foot and stem you have a highlight that continues unto the stem, just stop that highlight at the base of the stem.  The other little thing that might have been bothering you is  the back right foot just bring it up by a hair toward the stem.
Otherwise it is perfect.  You know it is hardly noticable. Great work.

Lisa your glass is also very beautifull.  Although it was not mentioned i think you could just make the hightlight a bit brighter (not all of them but the prodominent ones) then it will look like cristal.   Great job.  :yippee:

Lisa,

Glad Danielle made her suggestion because I then realized I had not seen your glass.

Great job, just maybe extend the bottom (foot?) a little more on the right side to make it look exactly the size of the left side.

Hope you enjoyed doing the glass - it is such a satisfying lesson.

On the next attempt, start with the background darker as that will give everything more contrast so the glass will look even more shiny O0

Continuing on with pencil work, the two teens tried their luck at the glass today. Ryan says his stem went a bit wobbly but he doesn't know why.

Ryan's

And Rachel's glass - the afternoon sun caught by the camera, not the pencil!

both are spot on, well done guys :congrats: :not_worthy: :cloud9:

Ryan - when you have to draw horizontal or vertical lines, you may find that if you turn the paper at an angle it is easier - when you draw or write you hold your lower arm and wrist at a certain angle so try matching the angle of the paper to the angle of your arm - that works for me

Wasn't that fun, Ginger!  Loved that class, too.

The shiny spots are just sparkling!

Except for the base swinging out a bit too far to the left, I'd say you did a great job.

Mea, thank you for your comment. This is what Nolan was referencing in the first part of the video. Even though the drawing is copied, the shadings are playing a trick, which makes it look out of shape. Maybe Nolan will comment and let me know how I should have compensated for that.

Your glass is perfect :congrats:

It is just the shape of the base that is not symmetrical, so just rub over the left side and redo that by mirroring the shape of the right hand side, then working the rest of the reflections in O0 - something I should have done with mine but never did :knuppel2:

I was able to fix the bottom of my glass in the glass drawing, although I almost rubbed out the background and it came back slightly darker. The best part is that I know why it looked like it did. I should have worked from the edge of the pencil mark on the left side, in toward the stem instead of on the outside.

I would like to redo this glass and use in a frame. I was wondering if Nolan has a drawing of another glass or set of glasses that would make a great drawing companion to frame?
Title: Re: 5 - How to draw glass

How about a wine bottle and glass as a companion piece?  Nolan has an oil painting in a still life lesson with a wine bottle and a different shaped glass (How to paint glass objects).  You' could use the outline of the objects then do them in pencil.  Just print the reference photo in grayscale to give you the tonal values.

Nolan, would this be a way to do it?  Please correct me if I gave a bad suggestion.

Hi Mea and Val,

Sorry it took so long for me to get back in here. If I had my way, I would be here all the time. That is a great idea with the wine bottle and different glass. Maybe I could figure out all the lighting to turn it into a pencil drawing. I am sad that I will be away from the art for just a few weeks, hopefully can sneak some time in though. I am delighted that I will be helping my daughter with her one new baby and her 18 month old so she can finish her clinical work and graduate by the end of the year. I will be watching video's when I can and will take my drawing tools with me. I will need to save the painting for when I get back. I am almost finished with the rose so I will post that by tomorrow. I will upload a new picture of my glass bottom also. Bye for now.

you can even the background tonal value by tapping with the rounded end of your kneaded eraser O0

Why not pose your own set of glasses / companion glass then you will have an original drawing :heeha:
