Ghee, I'm so excited to start the apples....Nolan if I may ask, what are we going to draw after the apples?  My husband farms with Sussex stud cattle and tomorrow is his birthday. I thought of drawing him a pic of his Gold Cup winner of 2013....but my gosh, were do I start.....Impossible?

    Erika and Jennylynn, excellent apples.

I didn't submit mine for I hadn't finished the second apple which I did this evening and will post tomorrow.  Not too happy with my sketch pad paper which has too much tooth and so the skin of my apples look like oranges. I should have used copy paper.

WOW!!  What wonderful drawings already! They are all wonderful.....even yours, Nolan!  LOL
I am so very impressed, and this was a great class....sure learned a lot.
I'm really bringing up the rear, but I'm 'acomin!!  Slow...I've gone back and done more pencil tone charts....just not making the mental 'switch' quick enough from one pencil to the next. I'll soak it in!! It's fun, and guess that's the main thing.
Great jobs, everybody.

    Cyril you are such a good artist.  Your apples are expertly done as all of your work is.  It is a pleasure to look at what you do.  I have the same problem in that my sketch book paper is very rough, I had to shade and shade and shade in order to get rid of the tooth as the skin of my apples looked like the skin of an orange with all the pock marks.   I would actually prefer drawing on smoother paper.   Patricia

Great job Cyril
Just soften up the contrast / shading on the front apple, bottom left. Rather make the very bottom lighter and the top part of the light shading a little darker. Take a look at my final drawing to compare

Jennylynn, what is missing in your sencond apple is the final darks, darken the darkest parts and you will see the difference O0

Post by: nolan on March 04, 2014, 07:54:53 PM
;D Jill. Now you see why I said that an apple is one of the most difficult objects to draw. There are terribly small changes in tonal value that you need to be able to see in order to render it correctly

Both you and Marie have done an excellent job on your apples and can be very proud of them

Marie, I have added drawing sheep to my list as it sounds like a fun drawing and would make a good class exercise learning to draw the wool

Thanks Nolan.  Sheep, that sounds like fun.  But too late for this months challenge :). I've finally caught up so I'm going to finally get to drawing doggies.  In between I need to finish the lets draw course.  Not enough hours in the day it days in the month.

My thought exactly Nolan    Since everyone was so chuffed drawing furry animals, I thought the sheep would make for some extra fun.... will be interesting to see how they turn out. Me thinks we may all need that class soon!!   :2funny:

Very nicely done Bryndis. My only suggestion would be to increase your darks a bit to add more dimension. ie: the shadows in close, and to help give more curvature to the apples. Good job.

:thankyou: Robin,  confidence (never was confident) but now these courses and all of you and family have given me more confidence then I ever had.

Something I would never have done before, I went to the Dr. for some minor  surgery for my daughter  (costly for us, no freebe on that one)  and asked him if he wanted to do barter with my painting and his services.   Then on the day of the surgery I brought my painting to show him what I can do.  Got to see him again, don't know if anything will come of it.   Will see.  Ps so far I have paid for his services.

Ann-Mari

The apples look well formed.  Nice stems and great indentation where the stem comes out of the apple.  I have trouble making that spot look real.

The part that seems the hardest is how to get the dots to not look unnatural.  I think that with the tiniest bit of shading on one side, they might look more settled into the skin.  But, oh, no, that's a lot of dots to shade.  Maybe try a few and see if it even makes a difference.  Actually, yours seem pretty believable as they are.

what I suggest is to loose the reflection on the bottom left edge of the front apple. It is making the apple loose it's rounding in that area O0

As I said at the beginning of the class, for some reason apples are not so easy to draw as you would expect.
You have done a great job with yours though :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
just be careful of pressing too hard with drawing your outlines, it mustn't damage the paper

Ryan to get the apples smoother, go back in with a lighter pencil, eg, HB in the 2B areas. That has the effect of smoothing the contrast between the graphite and the exposed paper between

kathy,

Yes,, the darker version is much better.

I think a tiny bit of shading to the shadowed side of each dot will make it set better on the apple.

Hmmm   a slice of warm apple pie would be nice right now - or better yet, less work and calories with some poached apples slices and a bit of sprinkled cinnamon.

Might be good to lighten the outside edge of the shadow - looks too outlined.
