What a gorgeous composition!!! I am sorry I can't do pastels. For sure I'll try this one on watercolor. Thanks Dennis, Doina

Dennis, you say you use watercolour paper but which kind do you use? I have several makes but mostly Arches. I presume the hot pressed ins't good for pastel work but which should I choose, cold pressed and rough?

I won't be using watercolour paper in this lesson, but those who want to may use watercolour paper - it does not really matter at this stage - just that so many still have lots of W/C paper in stock.

I have been using 300gsm cold press in the past because of the water factor but you may use a much thinner paper for pastels. Either side does not matter either - depending on the texture you want for your particular painting.

:thankyou:  Jennylynn. Still not happy with all the paper showing through.  :D   I'm starting to think my pastels might be too hard, even though it says 'soft' on the box.

Nicely done Natalie, Jennylynn and Dorothy!! They all look great!
I left after an hour and put it on hold then came back just a bit ago and finished. I did the background first in watercolor. Now I think it was a bad idea to do it first.  Also, I am trying to like pastels but it is a hard sell. The edges are not defined as well and everything looks out of focus. I don't need that, these eyes can do that all by themselves. Oh well, onward and upward. I put this background on it hoping it would help!!! LOL

This is my try to paint along. Wasn't easy at all. I also got lost at the bottom part. I may redo this lesson later.
Also, I didn't  like the paper I used. It's Canson Mi-Teintes for Pastels. I should use a better quality paper I have on hand.

Well done, everybody. O0

Great lesson, Dennis. :smitten:

WOW ;)  Kudos for everyone on the paint-a-long      Not the easiest of flowers to paint.

Remember that I pointed out in the B/W print that the flowers were virtually all at the same tonal range. The trick was to be able to change the colours to separate the petals from each other.

Carol, don't worry at this stage that the edges are not sharp. We will get to that later on. As a beginner one has to first get used to the idea of direct application and how to "mix" the colours.

Natalie, JennyLynn, Dorothy, Carol and Lidiya What a lovely flowers you all have made :smitten:
They look so colourful and vibrant. This must have been a real challenge, all those petals and tiny leafs, but they looks just awesome!! Wished I could follow this course, but well, maybe sometime in the future. But Dennis being so nice to give the templates makes it possible to try it on my own...yours look so wonderful and inspiring.

As nice as these paintings are... Dennis had a much nicer looking picture. I have failed on my 1st attempt but will post something as soon as I bandage my fingers. "You all's" water paintings seemed much more inline with the demo pictures. These pastels are not  easy. I also realized I used oil pastel paper which is very smooth. Just bought a small 8.5 x 11 soft pastel pad for $6 at Michaels on their 50% sale.  I will attempt again.  Good job every one!

Great renderings of this flower class.  You all did such a super job on your flowers...they are lovely.  It looks like a hard one, but I'm goin low n slow so that I can keep in order the techniques I need to learn.  I'm still trying to finish the farm. (Along came an onion and some garlic!!)  LOL
Good job, everyone. I love the colors you've all put in to your picture.

This is my second attempt on Canna Flower.
When I saw Dennis' Canna on black paper, I could not resist to give it a try  :smitten:.
On the second time it was easier to paint. I followed Dennis in the beginning only,  then I painted by myself using the reference picture as a guideline.  :painting:
My real picture has more yellow colour than the copy above.

NOTICE:

We will be replacing the existing canna video with another re-rendered one. Unfortunately this will take some time and will possibly only be available in 24 hours time as the computer is busy with another project at the moment.

We will notify you when the new video has been uploaded and ready for viewing.

Thank you for your patience.  :flowers:

the freezing problem will also be fixed in the next few days - the problem is that Youtube is estimating your bandwidth too high and serving you a video quality that your bandwidth cannot handle. I need to do some programming to change the system so that you are able to adjust the quality of the video yourself.

I so enjoyed painting this.  I used Mi-Teintes, cannot decide if I like it or not for small work.  Loved the feel of my hand moving the pastel over the paper for the background.  The paper is very thin.  At the moment I tend to think the backside of the Arches coldpress is better.
Thank you Dennis and Nolan for fixing the replay.  It played very well, in fact, better than any other playback.

Trying to catch up on my missed lessons and this is my rendition of the Canna.  I find working with the sticks a little difficult for it is hard to see where you are putting the pastels down especially in small areas. I used a tortillion to get into the corners and was itching to use the pastel pencils but could hear Dennis saying "no pastel pencils, they will come later" so I soldiered on and this is the result. Comments and critiques are always welcomed.   Thank you.  Patricia

Yes, Jill, it is lovely going away but so nice to come home too and to be back in the swing of things.  I enjoyed the warmth of Florida for the time we were there.  The weather, vegetation etc reminds me so much of Durban, my original home and I always feel very comfortable there. We have come back to so much snow.  Oh! Well, it will soon be Summer.

Dennis  :thankyou: for your encouragment. I had some troubles with the paper's texture, looks like that I picked a heavier one and the pastels I'm using read "soft", but I think they are more in the semi-soft range. I will try to find a more softer ones out of town. In the mean time this is what I got.

Danielle thanks for messaging in spanish, very good by the way!! MUCHAS GRACIAS!!!

I haven't finished yet, tape still on and I haven't applied fixative yet.  I would appreciate before I finish up to ask for any hints where I may have missed or even to improve it.   Another bad attempt with the photo to post its a hit and miss for me the photo seems to go in any direction nomatter which way I take it.

I think it looks fine Therese.
It will upload the photo how it is on your screen.
If you need to rotate it so it is upright you should be able to with
the software on your computer.

your painting looks great!!!!  You must have done something more sophisticated than I did when I first started trying to use my macbook and iPad to load.  I could never get it to work without buying the Elements software that allowed me to resize.  I am sure someone here will know what to do though!

Thanks ncwren I enjoyed the lesson alittle challenging still not finding posting my work easy.  I think my problem now is the size of my photo over 2.0 mb. Have to work out making it small.

Thanks. Lynn P. It's nice to see the end picture

Dennis thanks for the class looking forward to the next one

Therese,

I make large files smaller by opening the photo in Microsoft PAINT (in Windows 7).  Once there, just resize it to a smaller size (sometime I go as low as 25%.  The save it as a jpg and it's readily usable for almost anything.

I use my printer with a scanner to scan paintings and drawings no larger than 8 x 10 inches directly from PAINT options.

PAINT sure made things easy for me to size things.  Then if they need any other adjustments, I use Picasa.

Here's my try at the Canna flower. I don't have as dark a blue as Dennis does for my background, and had to improvise with some other colors. Dang, it's a lot harder to follow this lesson than a WC one (as Dennis pointed out), so glad this was a taped class.  Three quarters of the way through I started to really enjoy it...looking forward to the next class and to any edit suggestions...

I love the subtleness of this pastel.

At first I was overwhelmed with the blue, but then realized it was just the painter tape.  Once this is matted, the flowers will pop!

Lovely work.

Lovely pastel flowers, i was just wondering if you were to soften the lines it would make the petals pop more.  You can soften with the smudger or what ever it is called.

Title: Re: PA - LESSON #4 - Canna Flower

Carey, don't stress too much at this stage about fine detail. Get used to using the pastels. The detailing part will come at a later stage. If you want to be proficient in pastels the I suggest you follow the lessons in order as I presented them, as each one more or less follows the other towards a higher level.

If I stand way back from the background, it does not look as grainy and the flowers stand out better and look even prettier.
