Nolan,

I just signed up for the portrait drawing lessons, but will probably be doing them on replays as my schedule will be tight for the next two months.

Looking forward to these classes.  Need to know how to do faces, hair, etc.  Glad you have offered them.

Oh! Bev, I hope it is just a check up and that your ankle is much better.  Keep us in the loop for I miss you when I don't see your posts. I tell you, I am like a mother hen and I actually hate going back on posts and seeing that we haven't had any recent posts from this person and that person in a long time, then I start to worry and pray that they are O.K.  Patricia

Jennlynn I am sure wrinkles are harder, I think if you will lighten those dark pencil lines. That it would blend better. Then just darken the shadow a little bit as it comes out of the wrinkle. Because right now it just looks like you put a pencil line in. Now your eyes looks great. Just a little tweaking is all you need.

Nolan, so sorry I am not in a position financially to take the drawing faces courses.  Maybe in a few months I can give it a try, but just not right now.  I didn't want to start with one part if I couldn't do the whole thing.   :(

Those of you who have started with the 'eyes' class are doing so well, keep up the good drawing  O0    :flowers:

Here is my attempt. My drawings are being done in a sletchbook. I found out that I need to put some paper under the sheet I am working on to prevent impressions being made on the sheet underneath.

I am happy with this attempt. This eye really looks like an eye!!!! Many thanks Nolan for the great instruction.  :thankyou: This is the first time that I can say the eye looks correct.

Thank you, Lynn. I'm not sure where the softness comes from, but I guess I need to embrace it and not fight it. Jennylynn, I admire your persistence. I too would like to see that lower lid altered a little bit. As it is, it ends at the iris making the bottom of the iris appear to rest outside of the eyelid. Otherwise you have some nice soft shading. :)

Trailing behind everyone else, but here is my first eye.

Quick question, was I supposed to draw it at the full size of the template, or should I have reduced it? It was quite big!

Carol

you can resize if you want. The idea though was to draw full size as it is easier doing larger than smaller.

You have done a great job, lovely shadings
The bottom right hand side of the iris curls in just a touch too quick, so you loose the rounding there, just expand it a touch to complete the circle O0

Hi Nolan and all.  Finally had time to start some of these classes.  I really need this one as I have 2 portraits awaiting eye realignment :)  so I thought this was a good way to start.  I tried one in colored pencil also (never used them before) and that second effort was way too hard.  I can't seem to correct or blu tack the colored pencil so the pupil is off!

Here is the correction suggested by Danielle.   :flowers: Danielle!

I found this one quite tricky, and am still not entirely satisfied with it. :(

   Lynn your eyes are beautiful, i like the coloured one also and the colour of the skin. Your eye alinment is fine it is the pupple that should be even to be centered. What you could do is start at the bottom of the pupple and a bit on the sides but not the to, that should center it.

Finally!  I got to the portrait class and have finished the first eye.

I am pleased with it even though it is not perfect.  I tried to follow Nolan as best I could, but I think he has better pencils than I have!  Your suggestions will be valuable to make the next one better.

I enjoyed it and will try the old person's eye tomorrow.

Thanks, Danielle, Lynn, and Val.

I did not notice the pupil was not centered until you called it to my attention - I appreciate that.  I had to take a ruler and measure.

My right eye has astigmatism, so I often don't see things the right way.   I'll measure from now on.

Louisa, take a look at the shading on the eyeball. (especially outer side) The shading needs to be 'rounded' a bit more, and lightened as it moves toward the center of the eye so it fades away. I hope I'm explaining this properly.  :crazy2:

Bottom eye is beautifully done - love the eyelashes.

Top eye is probably needs more shading to get the depth in the wrinkles and the very dark line over the eyeball seems to be too dark and thick.

Keep at it - doing well.

Beautiful work Latti, (I know...Ann-Mari...I just like the sound  ;) )  Just something about the lower inner eyelid... can't quite put my finger on it, especially as it gets toward the outer edge of the eye.

Whoop! Whoop!  Yes you did!  And an excellent drawing of the eye too.  I might add a little more value under the top eyelid.  To give the feeling that the eyeball is disappearing under the eyelid.

Be proud, Barry.  You are making great strides.

Barry,

It looks good -  Nice depth in the lens.

Ooops - At the very right corner of the eye, the roundness goes flat.

Oh, and I think the twinkle seems a bit too constructed - looks like the center of an anthurium.

Fix those and you'll have quite a lovely eye looking at you.

I like how you really got into the iris.  I love looking at eye details also.  Like make a big round picture of just the iris and pupil for side idea.  They are like galaxies aren't they?  Nice.  I like that too.  With the rest of the suggestions and definitions around the eye, I believe the beautiful iris you did will still stand out.  I secretly wanted to do the same thing.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and the encourgement. I'm now onto the older eye and it is an order of magnitue harder! It seems that each wrinkle is its own project, and it is taking forever, and I fear that it is not coming out as nice as this past eye, even though I already have more time in it.

And BTW - nice try, but I don't believe for a minute that there is a paint eraiser '  ::)

I had a go at the "How to draw an eye" class... here is my result. I drew it free hand without template - and i think I did it a bit big, it makes the shaded area much harder. (Iris = 5cm dia, White of the eye = 12cm)

It actually looks better in a smaller image on screen than it does on paper.

Just as an improvement example (advert for Nolan  :D ) here is an eye I drew a few months back before I joined

Hi Win, nice drawing.    May I suggest for the old eye, I would add a bit more value.   As for the ladies eye I would correct the iris to a rounder form (left botom) and center the pupil (imagine a circle and center it). Also i would make the highlight brighter.

Thanks Danielle. amazing how the tiniest little crooked line can make a difference :) i can see the not so perfect circle of the iris, now that you have pointed it out.

I still do battle with  Tonal Values especially the subtle differences.  I shall revisit the Old mans eye and see if I can correct it or just redo it maybe, hes had  the eraser to him quite a bit  :P

Really good eyes.
The top one reminds me of my own early attempts because Dennis rightly pointed out that the pupil has to be EXACTLY in the center of the iris and I made the same error you have in yours!
The bottom one is really good, I don't think it looks like Elephant skin at all, but exactly what you drew, an elderly persons eye. If you don't like it just soften the hard edges a little with a blending stick of your finger tip.
