Oh! Val, I am sorry that you missed an excellent class ... this internet business makes one sick but you have the replay, thank heavens! Looking forward to seeing your drawing of the noses after you watch the lesson.  Lucky that you are not in Canada today ... we are having the most awful snow storm. It has been coming down all day and is only due to cease at midnight when it is scheduled to go down to -20 degrees. Be thankful that you are enjoying warmer weather.

Yes, Danielle.  I just looked at Val's Gallery because it was the first name that came into my head.  These are the steps I used:

Click on MEMBERS; Then click "SEARCH FOR MEMBERS."  Enter a name.  When you get the page of the person you want, click on MEDIA, then click on VIEW ITEMS.

Hmmm, I just tried it again, using your name.   To my surprise, I was told I do not have access to your gallery.

I wonder if that has something to do with why you can't see others.

NOLAN, help!!!

Oh no, Val!!! Not that, too! Everything else seems to respond to gravity as I get older. Nobody warned me about nostrils going south. Yup I agree, Jenny. A little nostril lift and you will be in business with noses. Nice Marie and Cyril. I have to back a few pages to see the rest. I almost missed my dental appointment this morning working on my first nose. Funny how much you can lose yourself just sitting and drawing.

Two more noses to add to that ever growing list of noses. . . . .
don't think I've gotten the shading on this second nose quite right. . . . something looks whacky to me

Bev, your noses are well done for sure.   I think the reason why you feel the second one looks "whacky" is the shading underneath the nose.  The nose itself is very well done.    Patricia

I think the reason why you feel the second one looks "whacky" is the shading underneath the nose. Patricia
Think you might be right Patricia. . . . DH wanted to know why my model had a race track running up her nostril! That was the nicest thing he said about it. . . .  :2funny:

Sferri,

Good work.  You might want to blend the pencil work with a tortillion or even a cotton swab.  Makes the skin look so much more real.  Makes a big difference.

Befolre you use  blending tools you should use different pencils of different hardness.  The tortillon is good but it is harder to erase than pencil shadding as it impregnates  into the paper   Nolan shows an excellent way to utilize pencils of different strenght.  Hope this helps.

Nice start on the noses, Sherri, you are doing a great job.
I seem to be following along behind Danielle and saying yep, yep, what Danielle said. . . .and I'll say it again. . . Danielle is quite right about the blending tools. Nolan would prefer that we learn how to blend with our pencils before we try to use a tool. A tortillon or stomp makes it too easy to compress the tooth of the paper and ruin your drawing. Learn to start with a 2H pencil and then progress to an H then to an HB and so on. Always gently, gently, gently let your pencil do the work. It gets easier the more you do . . . trust me, I know!!!! ;D

what you need to be careful of is the positioning of each feature and the lost and found lines Sherri. Both are off in your first nose study. Maybe do this one again for the extra practice. Remember the nose shadings are very subtle O0

Rachel,

Nice job on the noses.  The one on the right could use some blending stick.  If you don't have one, just rub a cotton swab over it lightly, rubbing it in the same contour as the nose.  Will make the skin look nice and smooth.

It's so much fun watching your progress.

Another submission... noses this time.

Is it just me, but when shading I tend to focus on a small area... and it never looks great... but then when you 'take a step back' and look at the whole image it really seems to take shape.

Wonderful noses, Adrian.  Well shaped.

Yes, that whole "step back" thing really works.

Did you use a blending stick on these when you finished drawing?  They seem to have a stipey look, especially the one on the right.

Mea - no, I didn't use a blending stick, I don't have one... I have seen some 'how to make one with rolled up paper'....

One thing I was thinking of, and that is the approach used on the Fighter Plane (Steam) - and that uses a cloth, rubbed over graphite on a separate sheet used to lay down a background... why is that approach not used to get smooth skin?

Adrian,

Look for an inexpensive pack of blending sticks in the art department of any department store.  Got mine for cheap at WalMart (USA).  Wish you lived next door.  I'd pop around with one for you.

As for the rubbing graphite technique, it works great for large areas like clouds and steam as you have seen.  But, I don't think you'd get smooth skin with it as the area is too small.  Might make a nice experiment though if you were doing a very large drawing of a face.

I wish I lived next door as well... Hawaii sounds nice this time of year (grey and damp UK weather!!)

Next time I'm out, I will grab some blenders

why we don't use it on smooth skin is because the cloth method is not very accurate :-\

Vidar,

I like the side view.

The front-on view has the nostril on the left just a bit wider.  Maybe that's what bothered you.

You are doing well.  Keep at it.

it is just the symmetry that is off, so a good lesson learned with the first drawing - getting the shapes and positions of the main features correct is critical when drawing portraits. O0

The second nose is great

I added my nose drawing to a new alblum, but still have not figured out to attach it here.

Here you go....

Catmajor,

Welcome to Paintbasket.  Looks like you are off to a good start.  Your nose looks very well formed, but could use more dark contrasts.  You'll hear that a lot from us as we have learned that the greater the contrasts, the better the drawing.

Give us more!

Do you think darker pencil that is not so blended would give me what it needs, or is it purely tonal?
Title: Re: 8 - How to draw noses

Tezza

Look at the reference photo.  Then match up your pencils to the tones you see on the photo.

If you don't have the same range, then try to make the darkest one you have dark -darker- darkest.

Hope that made sense - sometimes I sound dumb, dumber, dumbest.

awesome shading work Cat :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

All you need to do now is fine tune the contrasts. To do that look and compare with your reference photo to see where you need to go darker. Then start with a little softer pencil, eg. if you ended with the HB, you move to the B pencil and work in the darker shadings (without pressing hard), i you can't go any darker without pressing hard, then you move to the next softer pencil (2B) and so on... :idiot2:

PS - :bigwelcome: to the Paint Basket family, please take a minute to say Hi in the ABout Me section so we know a bit more about your art background, etc. O0

Okay, the noses are drawn. I found the eyes more exciting to draw but this was an excellent class. I think I'll like noses better when they are part of the entire face. O0

Sally,

You achieved something that always alludes me - the roundness over the nostrils.  So smoothly shaded and blended.  My attempts look flat and forced.

Only concern is the misalignment off center with the eyes.  Or, could be someone who had a broken nose at one point and did not get it pushed back to center. (Happened to my husband once and he pushed it back in place all by himself!)

fabulous shading work. You have the lost and found lines established beautifully, well done. :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

Mea, I suspect the angle you are referring to is due to the photo being taken from the side and not directly from the front O0

Thank you for all your comments. When I looked at the drawing the left eye as you look at the picture did look slightly off so I have reworked it.  See what you think.  I'm glad there's only one nose per portrait - they are difficult.

Sally you have definitely improved the eye socket shapes. I wouldn't worry over much at this point though. Your main focus is the nose.  O0   But I know what you mean.... I'm seldom happy if things look.... 'unbalanced'  ;)     Great job.
