Really nice Nolan, Harold and Dorothy!  Nolan, I'd like to say that the descriptive teaching you give before you ever start drawing has been invaluable. I have done some portrait classes, and have gotten some of the "principles" or "rules" of drawing them, but not a complete understanding of why it is done that way, and what to look for in your subject. This is quite enriching. Can't wait to go see what I missed yesterday.

I just came back this morning, and Danielle, you really got the little smile line fold on the left of the mouth to contour and lift away from the flat plane of the paper, plus that somewhat confusing base of the nose is well done also, helping to lift it a bit even at this extreme side angle. I haven't even watched Nolan do the teeth and lips yet, so I am marveling at what all of you have done with them. Right after my  :coffee: !

Thought I had finsihed this Friday, but let it sit for a day. When I came back I darkened the sknin tones more. Then let it sit. Went back to it yesterday and darkened again. My question - are the skin tones dark enough?

I found that the mouth itself was much easier, but still question those skin tones. :-\

Scribe, I am having the same dilemma in sitting with mine. And yet, this mouth is so large, that darkening the skin tones seems like such a Hurculean task each time. My first reaction to your mouth when I saw it was "Oh, another really good drawing." I thought that it was lovely, I was jealous, and I really liked the dark contrast in the background. It made me think I need to add some contrast to my front teeth. So now, I guess, in answer to your question, I think it is enough. Given another project, a smaller scale, more facial features, I think you will be able to determine the proper skin tone values without difficulty.

all excellent mouths guys. I am happy with the skin tones as we can't see the entire face, there is a lack of contrast. What is more important is getting the subtle shadings correct and that everybody is doing. Clearly all the previous lessons have done their work.

Thank you Scribe and Mea. Oops! I don't think I thanked previous commenters either.  :thankyou:  I had a hard time, too. Had to learn to let go a bit with skin blending. And I'm not used to tracing an image and scored my paper in many places. Luckily it doesn't show up in this reduced form.

  Terrific mouth Jill! . . . . .I too found the size daunting at first, but steadily, one fang at a time, shading, shading, shading we got it done!  :2funny:
When we first started with the big nose and the even bigger teeth I wondered . . .what the heck??? But Nolan is a brilliant teacher. . . . .for now, after seeing all the planes and facets of the teeth and how they fit into the gums and the rest of the stuff, think how much simpler it will be to do real life sized ones. . . . . hummm?

Thank you, Steven, Danielle, and Patricia.  The teeth were a challenge.

The shading was too dark so I blended it out with a cotton swab.  Lost a bit of tonal value in the process (Sorry, Nolan), but they don't look so garish now.

Interesting lesson. Hope I never have to do another set of teeth that big again, though.

In my experience it is when you draw too fast, then you tend to move your hand across the page too quickly for the strokes to overlap - I know that is what I tend to do :-\ . Pencil drawing is a slow process which requires patience

great job so far Mark.
When looking at this drawing however, I get the feeling it was rushed as the strokes do not overlap each other. Portrait drawing is one of those subjects that you simply cannot do quickly. Rather work on a drawing in sessions if you feel you are starting to rush. You want each stroke to overlap the previous slightly in order to get the smooth finish required for the skin. You could see that in the class itself - the surrounding area took way longer than the actual mouth because it.

Elize,

I think you did well.

The cracks on the bottom lip have a "soldiers in a row" look to them.  Try to vary them a bit - I don't think they go all the way to the back in real life - always more noticeable at the edge.

Still, though, good work.

Hi.  Here's the mouth I drew.  Found out what Nolan meant by "clown mouth" and decided the remedy was increasing the skin tonal value.  I took a picture of it before increasing the value because it looks frankly creepy.

Some excellent work all round... I'm not in a position to give pointers, just encouragement!
...and I like to see the progress others are making so I have something to look forward to.

Great stuff!

Cracking the whip to get Rachel onto her artwork. She has an English exam and a Uni assignment due this week but to me her art is just as important  8)

So continuing with portraits here is her sketch of the mouth. (I'm a hard taskmaster!)

Nolan - when you showed the colours of the teeth, reminded me of an amazing illusion

Hard to believe the 2 squares are the same shade.

yeah it is amazing how the eye can fool you - this nicely proves the "you can't have bright lights without dark shadows" principle as well O0

Well, I've had a go (still no blending stick though!) - nowhere near as smooth as Rachel's!

One thing I have noticed is that I seem to be using 1 or 2 levels darker on the 'B pencils' and 1 or 2 level lighter on the H pencils.

When Nolan says 'put down some light tonal value to get rid of the white (using 2H)'.... I try that and it seems too dark - even when really light. I then move to a 3H or 4H to get a light cover... trouble is that the 4H really seems scratchy when used really light.

Not sure if this is something in my 'technique' (or lack of!) or whether it is the actual pencils that I use. I guess, not all pencils are the same...?

great job Adrian

Different makes of pencils give different result. The harder pencil do unfortunately tend to have little hard bits in them.  :-\ Sometimes you have just resharpen the pencil to sharpen past the hard bit.

Post by: Class Mac on September 10, 2015, 08:59:14 AM
Adrian, who needs blending sticks? I think Rachel tends to get inventive and often uses cotton buds (Q-tips?) or tissues rolled into a point...

I'm starting way back on pencil techniques and have noticed some pencils are more 'scratchy' than others. Your sketch looks fine to me!

very happy with the mouth, well done :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

What you can still do is "polish" the skin some more by going over it with a lighter pencil, that evens out the tonal value difference between the pencil used and the paper. eg. if you have used an HB, then an H or 2H will even it. If you have used a 4B, then you even out using an HB and so on O0

Here is my rendering of the mouth. It was quite a strong lesson in creating shape and form with tonal values. It was surprising to me how few found lines are in this drawing. As always, I thoroughly enjoyed the lesson.

Kathy,

Nice shine.  Nice color. Good tonal value. Teeth are well shaped.

I think you have the center of the lips over too far.  The two largest teeth seem to be the middle ones.  Hmmm... then the nose would be over too far, too.  Recheck your reference photo and see which is correct.

Isn't it fun to learn to do this!

 :thankyou: Thank you Mea.

I had to back and check on the placement of the lips and teeth. They are as the reference photo shows. It is the angle of the photo or it could be the way the subject is smiling. As I look at my drawing, I could possibly soften or gently lighten the edge of the upper lip to give more of thelook of stretching in the smile.

Maybe they should be shaded a bit more as they go deeper into the mouth, especially on the very end.

On the left, the inside of the mouth visible below the top teeth can go darker. That will give you a better looking in effect in that area O0
