I tried to keep up with the class. However, as I'm on holidays, I did not have a printer so I had to draw the face free hand so it's not that good.
Anyway here is my first attempt and as you can see I need a lot more practice.    :crazy2:

The sketch book I brought with me is not as good quality as my normal one and I could not get a very smooth finish.  :knuppel2:

Now that I've uploaded it I can see a lot of areas that need smoothing out.  :-\

Excellent attempt, ladies. Liz and Pat you really buzzed right along, and it's a great job. It was a hard lesson, as the tonal accents are so subtle.
Good drawing, girls!!

Patricia and Dorothy,

Good to see your drawings.  I missed the class because I had to "Senior Sit" for my friend's mom for 5 hours.

Will eventually get to the portrait classes.

Glad to see you all doing so well.

Patricia, Jennylynn, and Dorothy I am just stunned. Can't for the life of me imagine how you managed to get these drawn already. It takes me longer than this to lay out my drawings, much less shade them all in. I haven't seen the lesson yet, but can't imagine how Nolan pulled it off in two hours either. Regardless, you have accomplished some nice studies and should be feeling pretty darn confident right now!

Here is my third attempt (the first 2 went into the fireplace!!!). . . .
Had a lot of problems with my pencils this time. . . .lots of  little hard bits in the graphite. My Faber-Castells have never given me a problem before and I can't understand why they are acting up now. . .

I think I left her a bit too white under the chin, although I did go back and add more graphite there. C & C most welcome!!

Post by: nolan on April 07, 2014, 08:52:32 PM
just shows that with each drawing you are getting more practice, so your eye is being trained now to see smaller and smaller differences. The end result is that you are getting a better and better likeness :cloud9:

the lower lip on the left curls in too quickly so becomes too thin too quickly, fiddle there a bit more. Then darken the neck where it meets the face, in the center of the neck. You have too much contrast between the light and dark of the neck. That is where the problem by the chin lies O0

AND. . I'm soo happy I got to put you on cloud 9!!!! I just live to do that!!!!! :heeha: :yippee:

:thankyou:  Lady Patricia. .  . . I'm glad you like it and we'll keep the scrapes & scars between you & me. . . . . okay!! ;D  I love my Faber-Castell pencils, but they were misbehaving this time so I'm looking into the F-C 9000 collection. . . . these are supposed to be superior to the Goldfaber which I'm now using.
Off to make the little adjustments as Nolan suggested. . . . . .

 :thankyou: Ms. Sarah. . . . .I'll bet she's a lot prettier with hair though :2funny:

Very Nicely done everyone! While I was finally able to purchase the complete 'drawing faces' classes, I have not been able to draw any of them.  My medications have not been working well and my hands hurt too much to hold the pencils long enough to draw.  Dr just changed my meds this week, was hoping it would help, but so far it has not.  I will have to put drawing on the back burner for a while.

In the meantime I have been able to do a bit of Watercolor Painting, will post my painting once completed.

I still enjoy coming onto the site and seeing what all of you are doing... Great Job

This took some work.  Still not right.  Learned that being 1/32 out can change the the look completely.  Each time I looked at the face from a different angle I saw some other subtle change.  Maybe this will get better once I learn to draw hair.

I would never have known that one eye might be bigger than the other if you had not mentioned it.  m,aybe it's okay since her head is turned so her left eye is actually closer to us.

Good drawing Marie.  Not an easy one was it.

Thank you Bev (I'm also having trouble with the harder pencils Faber castell 9000, I wonder if they have changed manufactures.

Thanks  Danielle,  Not Claudia Schiffer - just a broken down actress:)

Here my submission. I did most of it along with Nolan, then went back and corrected and finished the piece. I had a hard time gauging tonal values without the eyes, nose & lips. Am looking forward to hair.

By the way, there are some fantastic pieces this time. By George, I think we are gettting it. :2funny:

Great job guys.

Sue - lets hope it is not long before you are better again

Marie - the right hand eye is a little big, use your baking paper to adjust / check yourself O0

Jill - You can still add more contrast to the left cheek, compare the tonal value from your reference O0

Peggy - very well done for drawing along. Just smooth the tone on the right hand cheek, just above where the cheek and chin meet, it's not quite dark enough yet O0

Bev I have no idea if faber-castell have changed their manufacturing.  Anything made in Mexico is of inferior quality.  Some of the Czech stuff is okay.  Wish I could lay my hand on some of the  eagle turquoise pencils.  My husband has some clutch pencils leads from 3h to hb.  They are are so creamy,  a dream to draw with.  Unfortunately I don't have any of the softer leads.  I must do some more checking and see if I can find them.

Jill, I have the Faber-Castell pencils from 2 sources: One from eBay and is called "Castell 9000 design set" manufactured in Germany. Is great! there are 12 pencils in a metal case/box from 5B to 5H! If you're patient, you get them at a good price. I paid $15 shipping included.

The second is from JoAnn Fabrics on line called "Graphite Sketch set".If you have a good JoAnn store around you, you'll be able to find it in the store. In the set are 6 pencils from 2H to 6B, a Faber-Castell dust free eraser and a manual pencil sharpener. This set is manufactured in Indonesia. Can't complain about, is as good as the one made in Germany. Be sure to use the coupons, they are not cheap. I used a 50% off.

Then 10 days ago I went to Walmart (big store) for something else, and found a set of 12 pencils from 4H to 8B Daler-Rowney for about $6.00 and manufactured in Vietnam. I've tried them, they are butter!! Today I went and bought 2 more.

When I started to draw(not to long time ago) I used Kimberly. I am not happy with them. I hope I was able to help you out with the pencils from my experience.

P.S here is a link with affordable prices on good pencils (sets, or singular pencil)

:thankyou:  Doina for that information on the pencils which will assist all of us I am sure.  I will be going to Wal-Mart tomorrow to look for the Daeler Rowney pencils.  I have been using Staedtler and a few Faber Castell but still feel I need softer pencils for my shading is very scratchy looking.  So thanks a ton for that information.

I am glad that I helped. I used Staedtler a lot in my engineering life. They are very good for technical drawing. I never use more than 2B! You may want to look at Prismacolor or Faber Castel "Ebony" extra soft pencils; or Royal woodless pencils. I have 6 and 8B. I used few times 6B. They are really soft.

Nolan, I reworked this. Did I darken it too much? I moved the left groove closer to the mouth and tried to make the mouth less "frowny". While it looked good at my desk, I see lots of problems on the computer screen.  I am working on her tresses and will correct any problems you see there.

Maybe i should had more contrast, with the 2 one below the other it does no look like i added much.

Peggy, the only way to get the shape of the mouth perfect now is to use the tracing paper method. Seeing as we don't know the model, I would leave her as is, you have done the essentials correct and that is the learning exercise for this lesson.

Danielle, much better, go ahead and do the hair. Once the hair is in you will be able to better judge if the extra tonal values in the face are enough

Good on you for trying again, Cyril.  I'd say the nose is just a bit too large - looks wider than the lips.

just the eye area is too dark so you either need to increase the contrast in the face or lower the contrast in the eyelash areas by lightly tapping with your kneaded eraser. Also don't forget to add the reflection into the left eye

what you can do is trace the template (main feature lines) onto tracing paper. That way you can lay it over the drawing to check that your lines haven't moved while shading O0
Title: Re: 11 - How to draw cheeks, chins and foreheads
Post by: AJM on September 16, 2015, 12:55:34 PM
I agree with Latti.... this one is really hard!!!

I have started, but not finished, and struggle to see the tonal changes throught the image. Nolan is right (once again!!) saying that when shading it looks like she has a dirty face!!

I still need to darken the right hand side (shadow of the hair) as it needs to be quite a it darker than the left.

...but the face looks too round to me - even though I used the tracing technique. Is this because I haven't added the hair (which may appear to elongate the face when a 'border' is added)?

Title: Re: 11 - How to draw cheeks, chins and foreheads
Post by: nolan on September 16, 2015, 08:19:37 PM
your shadings and everything are fine, all you need to do now is "polish" the uneven shadings to smooth the pencil marks. You are very close to a beautifully smooth skin with good contrasts

Use a pencil a shade or two lighter to "polish" the imperfections away. I do show how to do it in one of the portrait classes, but I just don't recall which one

Thanks... I did see the polishing technique... it seems illogical to 'add more graphite' to smooth... I keep thinking it will make it darker... but using a lighter pencil would stop that.

Will try to add more this evening...

Now that you have pointed it out Val I shall study the eyebrows and see what the problem is, the one does seem a bit off or the other too neat  :)

great job with the shadings

to get the super smooth look, come back in with a lighter pencil, eg. if you ended with a B pencil in an area, you come back with a 2H or an H and gently "polish" away the lighter "blemishes". O0

This can be quite time consuming so stand back every now and again to ensure you are not polishing away marks that are not visible from normal viewing distance

This one was a really hard challenge. I started by laying down the light tone by scraping the 2H pencil & then using my finger/ & small brush to mould around the features. It was good to get that basic down, but as I progressed into the features and forms, I kept overworking & think I've made it a bit grubby now. It was a great lesson & I enjoyed doing this class :) Thanks Nolan

no, what you do is use a lighter / harder pencil and carefully go back over the areas of imperfection in tonal value.
