Title: Stained Paper Collage with Watercolor
Post by: BeaSue on March 05, 2014, 08:15:01 PM
In this short video, Brenda Swenson offers a pretty cool new option for watercolor painting. Something I would like to try.

Sounds like fun, doesn't it? I've just ordered a pack of rice paper and will give it a try.

I'll have to wait until you post some of your work.... I can only run video for the classes, internet here is too expensive now.  :(

Val, its pretty simple:

1.  Paint the rice papers with watercolor paint and let them dry.

2.  Cut out the shapes you want, and place them on the watercolor paper. (It's okay if you have already done some light painting on the paper.)

3.  Brush matte medium over the appliques, and allow them to dry.

4.  You may paint over the dry collage paper to complete the painting.

I am currently working on a semi-abstract painting. Just for fun, I am going to try this technique on part of the painting. It may be a catastophe, but I'll post the results in the "Encourager" section when I'm done.

Below is Brenda Swensen's watercolor of persimmons using the collage technique. (It's a photo of HER painting, not mine.) She used collage for both the persimmons and the background, and then finished by adding details by regular watercolor painting.

Thanks Susan, that looks so cool! I love Brenda Swenson's work, wonderful loose style.  :yippee:

I'm all in suspenders waiting to see what you do with this collage technique.  :gl2:

Val, I wasn't pleased with what happened to the paper after I painted it. It shredded!  :tickedoff: Obviously, this is a technique that requires a little more practice.

Also a very, very light touch I would guess. Never mind, now you get the benefit of having another go!  O0
