My friend's niece's boyfriend was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident in January. She's asked me to paint this photograph and of him and his brother to give to their mother. I'd love to get any suggestions for improvements - I tried to keep the background more impressionistic in order to focus on the boys…thanks…
-
Zooming in to make the boys the subject of the painting might focus it a little more.
It's a good photograph to start with. Maybe tinting the yellow foreground and the background a little to give a "Halo" effect arounf the boys?
I like the depth you have in the painting.
A difficult painting to do with the tragedy associated with it.
Good work. Hope there is some help in my suggestions.

Good job, Sharon! What a meaningful gift this will be.
I think the yellow grasses in the foreground might show a little more detail than you have painted, then fading to blurrier toward the boys. I also like the blueish tint to the far-ground trees in the photo. Maybe a light blue glaze over those in your painting?
-
Thanks for your ideas. And i think a blue glaze would be good, Susan - and would make the boys pop a bit more brian. And I'll add some more detail to the grasses in the front. Grasses and trees have never been my strength. Thanks!
-
very nice :painting: i agree with Brian though I certainly am not an expert but the yelow grass stops to hard. I am sorry for the loss of the boyfriend, this is verry sad. :'(
-
Wow! You have gotten good in such a short time. I am years away from your level.
-
I am in awe of you doing something like this. It is great. I wonder if the older boy needs some more highlights in his hair or something, there is something not quite right about the top of his head? The idea of making the background more impressionist seems to work well. Good luck

Looks great Sharon-looking forward to the final painting.

In the oils class atmospheric perspective is a big topic. It would benefit you and your painting to watch that lesson. Understanding the scientific rules of nature, mountains and atmosphric perspective will allow you to fix the transition between the for and aft parts of the mountains. I am sold on it as is however, since I can't do as well. Great job!
-
I love your painting. My attention went to the boy on the left. His left arm raised and the nape of his neck showing made him seem vulnerable to me. What a great story your art is telling!
-
Wow, Sharon. You are gaining quite a reputation.
It looks very good to me.

Thanks again for everyone's suggestions - I tried to incorporate them as best I could - here's the final version as well as it framed. I sent this to the client last night and she called me up in tears - she said it was better than she had ever imagined it would be, especially knowing I've only been painting for 23 months. She's picking it up this weekend so she can deliver this to the boy's mother next week. I got choked up when I heard her message. This is one of those ah-ha moments when you realize how impactful art can be.
-
Sharon,
I am so happy for you. Your art is making a difference in your life and the lives of those around you.

Thanks everyone - I've been on cloud 9 ever since I saw the newsletter! Of course the painting never would have looked as good as it does without the wonderful suggestions from the PB community. I love the support and encouragement that flows so beautifully online.
And what's next Val - I'm being commissioned by a city councilman here to paint a picture of an iconic scene of his district. So stay tuned since I'll be needing everyone's feedback on this project too!
Thanks again!!

Congratulations on your upcoming commission! :yippee: Not to worry, we'll all be here ready to lend a..... thought....sorry, you'll still have to use your own hand! :2funny:
-
Thanks, Val - the painting is going to be a sign from his district from the early 1900's with street cars running underneath it. He wants me to incorporate some of the elements of the new playground they're building in that community. As soon as I get both photos I'll post them and would love everyone's help in composition to start...

Today on my Facebook page, the mother of the young man in this painting that died sent me this message below:
"I just want to let you know how much this painting means to me and my family. I cried tears of appreciation and joy when I saw it. It is right at the entrance of our home so it is the first thing you see when you enter our home. with gratitude to you."
As Dennis recently posted ( and I'm paraphrasing) - a life dedicated to art is most definitely not a life wasted. I'm so grateful to be an artist now and to know my art can be so meaningful to someone...
-
Congratulations Sharon, you deserve it. Good luck with the new one. Wondering if I keep looking at what I have missed you have already put up the photos and started :-)
-
You're so sweet, Lisa - thank you!
