I have seen sand dunes like that for they are pretty common in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.  Jill, did you not go to the Eastern Cape at all while living in South Africa?

Thanks Dennis.  I was frustrated with colors I was working with and could get the look I wanted.  I also tried a different color paper to see what that would do.  Interesting!

Thank you Patricia.  Where is yours?  Want to see it.

Sorry Jill, I could not reply sooner. Unfortunately I never booked this class as life has been pretty hectic around here with family.  I have so much on my plate but hopefully it will all calm down soon ... wishful thinking ... my youngest daughter is having her first baby any time now, I have my grandchildren sleeping over too as my eldest daughter is a nurse and is working 12 hour night shifts and her husband has to be at work at 4.20 a.m. so Granny has to take over.  Phew    .

The other day I finally bought a pad of 11 x 15 watercolor paper a bit bigger than the spiral pad of pastel paper I've been using so this morning I attempted the sea dunes lesson on it.

My proportions are a bit off as I am still learning to draw free hand ... as simple as this scene looks I did find it a bit challenging ... still having a ton of fun and for me that's what counts ... so it's all good!

 :thankyou: both

the 3 huts and the sea dunes are the only ones I've done so far on a bigger piece of paper and I must say a bit easier to work with. For the most part I've just been printing off the templates on 8 1/2 x 11 paper and transferring  that size onto the pastel paper.

Post by: Tousabella on August 08, 2014, 06:06:25 PM
Good job, Judyth. You are doing super great for free hand on larger paper.  I've found it's easier to paint, too, on larger paper. 11 X 15 is my smallest, and I'm really enjoying it.
A beautiful painting.   :flowers:

:thankyou: Retta! yes this is done on an 11 x 15 piece of watercolour paper so the painting is approx 9 x 13.

I do like the spiral pastel pad I have even though it is smaller because it's easy to store and it has the glassine inserts (I think that is the right word - it's sorta kinda like waxed paper) and it protects the paintings between each page of the spiral pad!

Beautifully done again Judith, may i suggest that you make the sea horizon straight, it is going down a bit on the right side. You can use a ruler!   Just a though otherwise it is great.

Nice work.  Hard to find sand dunes like that anymore.  Too much erosion now.

:thankyou: Judy, Mea, Natalie and Sharon!! Great encouragement words. This one was particularly difficult since it was an imagination situation. I am costa rican but leaving in Chile reminded me that somewhere in the middle of this country we have also beautiful dunes with vegetation capping them.

Mea, you are right. The horizon went darker when I smudged the blue to cover it and looks like I overpressed the pastel and then the front was more softly added. I will try to blend a bit more that area. Thank you!!!

Lovely painting, Juan Carlos    I live by the sea and one day it will be light in colour and the next day much darker - even the colour can change within a short time.

Selen,

I love the vivid colors of your sand dunes.  Nice that you added the people.

The grasses on the darker dune , bottom middle, should probably be darker as it appears to be in the shadow of the dune to the left.

Otherwise, great job.
