Well, I do not have a printer. I drew the eagle from computer, and then traced on paper. Because the drawing is to small, and not having  a photo print-out, I could not follow Nolan's instructions. Anyhow, here is my rendition. I'll try by next week to print one. I just purchased a new computer, and I have to wait till I can buy a printer

It took me since yesterday to draw on different papers, until I was able to come up with this. I physically traced as much as I could from the computer screen, and worked around. Thank you for your comment

    Doina, you did a fantastic job on the Eagle.  My printer is not the best and very often I cannot see the details but I do the best I can with what I have.  I really enjoyed the lesson although I found the Eagle quite challenging.   Patricia
Title: Re: 19 & 20 - How to draw Eagles
Post by: doina on May 29, 2014, 12:57:11 AM
Thanks Patricia for the encouragement.  Yes, I found this lesson very, very challenging. And I did not follow Nolan instruction because of the pattern I used. That's the reason I want to print out to follow his directions to learn the right way how to do the feathers!! Did you worked on and 8.5x11 or you have the European standards? I wonder how small will be the eagle on a 8.5x 11 inches paper! Nolan said that he draw on an A3 size paper. That would be the 11x17 equivalent!! Oh boy!

I have added the raw replay to your class list O0

Great job Doina, I would now go back and continue adding more detail to the feathers

Nolan that drawing is increadible, the eyes are so beautifull.  Yes you should finish it!!!  :sneaky: ;D ;D :hammer:
God you make hard on me, I want to do all the mediums but gosh i will have to decide which one I want to continue with.  Don't know if I should continue pencil or do pastel or water colours.   :pullhair:.  Specially with summer comming i do not find as much time as in fall/winter.  Are summers are so short I love the outdoors

Thank you :thankyou: Nina,  :thankyou: mea and   :thankyou: Val. It was really hectic to put together the sketch. This class is tough!
Patricia your drawing is great!  as usual!   Danielle, I have the same problem. I decided to take pencil drawing and watercolor. Maybe later, much,... much later I'll take pen and ink. I have to learn so much on drawing! and this medium is the basis of all.
Nolan thank you for advise, I will finish this one, and then I'll go to a print shop to have it printed on the right size of paper.

Doina and Patricia your Eagles look great, well done. I loved the lesson but didn't draw  I'll try to catch up from the last one I did, the Onions, but I am sure I will love doing the birds...I really love birds, there feathers look like a reall hard challenge to get right. So,   O0 for the great work you both did. :flowers:

:thankyou: :thankyou: :thankyou:  Doina, Mea and Riya for your comments.  Yes, Riya the feathers are a bit of a challenge but still very interesting.  I erased the top feathers of my eagle last night and re-did them after I saw Nolan's. My printer gives very poor printouts and I can't see the detail but I think my eagle is looking a bit better than the photograph I submitted.  Looking forward to finishing it.   Patricia

I am still watching the video and counting the feathers I have to draw  ::) (just kidding)!

Three of the youngest grandkids finished their school year so I won't have large blocks of time to concentrate on drawing the eagle.  Last weekend Emily painted her seascapes; today Logan was sketching Hawaiian birds.  For me, I was able try some of Dennis' trees in  Landscape drawing, but I do plan to get to the eagle as soon as I can find quality time. :)

Whether I can retain it at my age is another story  :2funny: :2funny: :2funny:   but I will give it a good go.

Nolan, as I have said many times before, you are a FANTASTIC tutor and teach in a way that I can comprehend.

Liz, it is always best to start at the beginning for there are snippets of information which you miss if you don't and besides, the lessons are built on top of one another much like a brick wall, one missing brick and the wall falls down.

Looking forward to seeing your completed Eagle Doina which I am sure will be superb.

Danielle,

Great job on the eagle, but he looks just a bit too friendly.  He needs to look a bit more fierce or he'll never survive in the wild.  Not sure how to make him look that way, though.

Great beak!

Thank you Judie for your comment.
:thankyou: Mea, what a Keen eye you have, I just did the correction by tweeking a bit (flattening the eye an adding black to the left side of the eye and under the feathers above the eye..  I hope that now he can make it in the wild.   ;D

This took awhile to complete. I had a difficult time getting the back to look similar to Nolan's - finally just drew the individual feathers. Also, did this at 100% and had way to much trouble getting the detail in. Started over at 150% and it worked much better. Over all I am pleased with how he turned out. :)

Liana,

The head is incredibly well done.  The beak, eyes, and hair under the beak are so good.

Will the rest of the body be filled in more or just give the impression of feathers, as Nolan would say.

I love it.

I like it, you captured it perfectly. There is something about the tonal value that I cannot pinpoint. Where is the light source?
Title: Re: 19 & 20 - How to draw Eagles
Post by: Cynthia Danielson on August 13, 2015, 05:40:27 PM
The light source is from the top left.  The back of his head and his back are in shadow.  Also the highlights on the reflective beak.  Thank you for the question.  I like searching out where the sun is coming from.  Like seeing the world in a different way now.

I've been trying to upload this eagle's stress feathers.  I keep getting an error message.  I use my phone and have to take a picture and it always worked fine before.  But I will send it when I can.  I haven't forgotten, Nolan.  It's like a brain thing.  Maybe I... say speculation a lot.  The feathers are not laying down nicely.  They look like the eagle is stressed and people would feel that in one way or another.  But... I'll be back asap.  Not today.  Very done with today.  I'm seeing a "family" here....  very cool.

your image file size is probably too large, resize it (http://picresize.com/) before uploading and let's see what happens
Title: Re: 19 & 20 - How to draw Eagles
Post by: Cynthia Danielson on August 20, 2015, 05:28:33 PM

The back feathers.  I know they are terrible.  Haven't touched them to try to fix.  Been speculating, but I damaged the paper doing his head just so and don't want to make it worse.  It's something I see anyway.

Thanks for the resize site!

Thanks Val.  For all your advice also.  I don't see how you pm'd me.  I'll get it though.  With this eagle, I'm not satisfied with the feathers on his back.  They look like stress feathers and I think people would feel that on some level looking at this piece.  It's rough looking, so maybe use a harder pencil, for one.  Maybe roll it all off and get my template out, watch the end of the lesson again, and get it right.  I happy you like him.  He's been fun to sketch.

I also don't see any big problems with the feathers, maybe just ensure the edge of each is defined?
