This was a very enjoyable and worthwhile lesson.  I see now that I want to have an electric eraser.  You can tell by the number of white flowers that I was at quite a disadvantage.

I used Strathmore 80lb. drawing paper.  Would something else have been better?

My scan is grainier than the sketch.

I think I improvised in a few places.

Regardless, it was fun and I learned a lot.

:yippee:    Mea i realy like your drawing, love the colour contrast, the water is sweet, the lighthouse is very well done nice rounding.  The only little thing I would change is the big clouds near the horizon line they are big, the further the smaller, but maybe it is a conglamoration of clouds.
You are becoming quite the artist.

Oh, dear, Danielle.  I hadn't thought about those clouds being that big in front.  They seemed that way in the reference photo.

I'll keep that it mind for the future.  Too late for this one.  I am sending it today to my friend in Massachusetts.  She collects lighthouses and is the perfect person to get this sketch.

Just want to show you that there's no problem with my pencil eraser; problem was with the artist!
This is what I learned:
1.  Sharpen the point of the eraser by rubbing carefully on sandpaper;
2.  Make sure there's enough graphite 'dust' on paper for the white to stand out;
3.  Work with a light hand.
Hope this helps someone!   :)   (Oh, this was done on scratch paper with a coffee stain!)

Title: Re: 24 - Lighthouse
Post by: MaryAnne Long on September 06, 2014, 08:48:18 PM
Liz,

Please clarify "coffee stain."  Was it a stain from spilled coffee (not by you, of course.)?

Or did you dye the paper with coffee?  If so, describe the technique you used.  maybe I'll try doing tea stains as "mixed media."

Mea, it was just a stain, maybe tea.   I used junk paper, remember the one the book worm ate right through and there's a tiny hole near the middle of the whole pad!  Since you asked, I've seen somebody's art done with brushing on coffee, tea, and wine and someone else actually uses coffee beans for texture.  Interesting mixed media!  8)

:surrender: Nolan! Help!!! Actually....anyone can help  ;)     I actually got to watch the whole video!  :heeha: All at once!!!  :faint:

Decided to give this a go as it seemed to be pretty quick and easy. Difficulty: Scribbled a flat pencil (6B by General) and wiped it on the drawing paper. Figured the darker/softer lead would make things go a bit quicker. The result was actually much lighter than I thought it should be so I did it again. Not a noticeable difference, and I think in spots it took off more graphite than it put on! (https://d326oobcc22bax.cloudfront.net/content/50147/1503456.GIF) (http://www.Quebles.com/Hotmail-Tools/Emoticons/)     What happened?  (https://d326oobcc22bax.cloudfront.net/content/125927/1512039.gif) (http://www.Quebles.com/Hotmail-Tools/Emoticons/)

I use a graphite stick 6b and it does the same with me. Kinda splotchy in places?
Title: Re: 24 - Lighthouse
Post by: liz on September 07, 2014, 03:03:23 PM
Same thing happens to me, too!  If the paper is too smooth, it seems it can't pick up the graphite too well. So I tried a slightly more textured sketch paper.  Where it didn't cover too well, I went in lightly with the pencil and smudged with Q tip. I use cotton balls and a soft brush lightly over the graphite, tried a small piece of cloth from an old T shirt, too.  Did you try a 4B pencil, too?  I only know that without enough of graphite dusting, the white parts will not be clearly seen.  Sorry, keep trying!

Sherri, what was your experience with the graphite rubbing?  Tour application looks pretty even.

Title: Re: 24 - Lighthouse
Post by: nolan on September 07, 2014, 08:38:22 PM
Excellent job Liz
Just soften the edges you have on the house. Outlining like that makes it look cartoon - hold your hand up to the screen so it covers the houses and you will see it looks like a photo, then remove your hand and suddenly you loose the photo realistic effect. O0

Val - The pencil you use must be soft, the 6B you used is fine. It does start off with a light uneven coating, but as you continue to wipe on, it evens out. Big thing when doing this is to not rub hard otherwise it saturates and smooths the paper so that it will not accept more graphite afterwards. There is no pressure involved at all. You will pick up the same problem if your paper is too smooth.
Title: Re: 24 - Lighthouse
Post by: Val on September 07, 2014, 08:54:24 PM
Thanks Liz and Nolan.  This was not my usual drawing paper. I think that is the problem...it is too smooth. Live and learn...now I get to do it again  :heeha:       :2funny:

Sometimes i scratch off graphite off the pencil onto the paper and then it seems to take better than to use cloth to rub graphite off of paper.   I also find using a pair of my husbands old cotton underwear work well.  ::)

(https://d326oobcc22bax.cloudfront.net/content/125927/1512045.gif) (http://www.Quebles.com/Hotmail-Tools/Emoticons/)  Natalie & Patricia! Have been putting in 12-14hr. days at the hospital of late.  It's a sin how shortstaffed and overworked they are. So taken over most of mum's care and helping the lady that shares her room. I enjoy helping the patients with there meals in the lunchroom, and encouraging the ones with their physio.  Took some a while to get used to me with my dark glasses all the time, but...poke a few jokes at myself and them and the next thing you know we're all bosum buddies! Everyone needs a laugh...and I'm the easiest one I know to joke about!  :2funny: One of the nurses said I should be on the payroll...  ;D          :cost: :2funny:

Anyway, when I get a bit of quiet time I try to do some sketching. They got a good laugh yesterday when I pronounced it finished and then realized I'd missed out the top of the lighthouse! What good is a lighthouse without a light ?!!!!    I just keep 'em rolling!   (https://d326oobcc22bax.cloudfront.net/content/125927/1512040.gif) (http://www.Quebles.com/Hotmail-Tools/Emoticons/)

Danielle, C., Natalie, Sherri, Nolan, and Liz      Thank you all so much for your wonderful comments and wishes. They are so much appreciated.  :cloud9:

Nolan, does the horizon line appear straight enough to you? I do have some variances in the degree of value...but does it look a bit 'wavy'?

Post by: May lynn on September 14, 2014, 07:50:57 PM
This is my version of a leaning lighthouse.

As for the dark spots on the water near the horizon line
it is the glue from the masking tape I used.  I was
unable to remove the glue and therefore, tried to incorporate
it into the ocean to no avail.

Between overworked clouds and leaning lighthouse
I learn a lot of new techniques with this lessons.

Thanks Nolan, a great lesson!!!

Val the general view of your horizon is straight, so no problem there, you do get that shimmering effect on the sea like yours has O0

Great job May lynn
Go get yourself a roll of low tack masking tape at the hardware store. That is the only tape you can use INSIDE your drawing.

This was fun to draw and very easy.  Have one question - is my horizon line dark enough? ???
My eraser is electric and has a cord (also h-e-a-v-y). It works beautifully for erasing calligraphy, but my arm gets very tired!!! Will have to look for a lighter, battery operated one. :)

Aloha, Shirl!  I'm glad you enjoyed your lighthouse drawing as so many folks have!

Thought I would share some good pointers with you and the rest that I am finding helpful when doing basic skies.

My 6th floor condo faces the horizon and I have set my drawing desk facing the ocean.  What I have observed is confirmed by master Hawaii artist Patrick Ching.  In a nutshell the sky has lower, middle, and high clouds.  Clouds are blurred out at the horizon and most often streaky.  Cumulus clouds at this level would be smaller in size; they increase in size in the middle level and really can be towering clouds at the highest or 3rd level, and of course there are various types of clouds in the sky at any given time.  My husband enjoys teaching me about clouds and weather as he is a retired meteorologist.  Hope this simplifies skies as Patrick says- think 3 levels when we paint skies.   :gl:

Thanks Liz!  because I don't plan to start over with my sky I won't be able to follow that pattern exactly but it is great information for future sea escapes. :twothumbs:

I never noticed clouds having a pattern before.  I live in Michigan ... no ocean but we have the great lakes and a lot of other lakes , rivers and streams.  It will be interesting to see if the clouds here follow the same pattern.

looks great, just vary the sizes of the clouds as Liz suggested to get the perspective correct O0
Clouds high up are close to you so need to be big, clouds on the horizon are far away so need to be smaller and flatter O0

Thanks, Danielle.  I was quite proud of that one.  I gave it to my friend who is a lighthouse fanatic.  Has them all over her house.  She framed it and hung it in the living room.

I agree that your pencil drawing is improving dramatically which in turn is going to help your paintings along too.

Just watch out for the repetitive patterns in the clouds, rather make each one unique. To do that lift out more graphite in some and add more to others O0

Your lighthouse scene is beautifully done.  Nice crisp clean lines on the lighthouse and houses.

Don't you just love doing clouds with the erasing method!!

I tried to remove the masking tape and it pulled half of the paper off. So question about tape and paper. I just used regular computer paper but also did it with the sketch paper I had 50 lb weight... Also tried the blue painters masking tape but that did the same. Does anyone have some thoughts on these two things? Thank you

Kris,

I had that happen to me a couple times, too.  I think that the heavier weight paper (70 or 80 lb.) prevents the tape from pulling a layer of paper off.

Another trick might be to warm the tape with a hair dryer as you pull it off, always remembering to pull it away from the drawing, not into it.

Hope that helps.

Yea Mea, I knew you would be on this this.. Thank you for the paper information. I will have to pick some up. I also googled and found out you are supposed to take your masking tape and press it to your clothing first before you use it on your paper. That sounds like a good idea. I will have to go buy some heavier weight paper. All I have is the lighter paper ot watercolor paper which won't work.  Have a great day!

Kris, there is masking tape which doesn't have such a strong bond, I also have the blue tape which sticks like crazy but the best thing to do is what Mea suggested and this is warm the masking tape with a hairdryer before trying to remove it.  Dennis always does that.

oh dear :-\

another thing you can do is lay a ruler over the area you want to mask if it is a straight line.

To dull the glue on masking tape it will stick it to my clothes a few times
Title: Re: 24 - Lighthouse
Post by: Val on October 21, 2015, 11:12:07 PM
Yep, stick it on your shirt, jeans, I find the back and seat of a chair, chesterfield etc. works very well. Really reduces the tackiness, if it still sticks too well get out the hairdryer!  :strong:     Heavier weight paper also makes a big difference.
