Good to know Carol-thanks!

Great fun Dennis-very enjoyable class!  O0
I tested out some pastel ground medium from Tri Art on cheapo matboard.  I like the sanded surface, but I don't think I had a very even coating-a lot more texture than I thought I had, but it worked well with this class.

Gee...Speedy Gonzalas!!  It's beautiful.  I like the medium on matboard...worked out great.  It will be interesting on something else, but this pic is terrific.  I like your shading in the smoke, and your trees are great.
Good job... :flowers:

I would suggest you lighten up the smoke against the background as this is actually the focal point of the scene.

Someday, I hope to be half as good as you pastel artists  :not_worthy:. Here is my rendition (only my second pastel I believe that was somewhat decent). Maybe my pics are too small. I have a tough time trying to get sharp lines. I bought pencils but I'm doing something wrong with the colors. I bought pastel paper also but I do not like the pattern that shows through.  I do a lot of erasing because my colors are too dark i.e. getting white steam.
Everyone has done a super job  on their trains.

Post by: ncwren on November 15, 2014, 10:18:23 PM
You need those darks to get that white steam Carol.
I think you are far too critical of your work.
Great job!

Carol,

Looks like you know what you are doing - pretty darn good.

Is it the photograph that gives the nubby effect  - or maybe you are right, it's the paper? I'm having a similar problem right now with using Watercolor pencils on watercolor paper.

Keep at it.  You are doing well.

Carol, you are well on your way - don't give up
Detail is not easy to obtain with a small painting on rough paper. I often use the back of the paper as this is normally much smoother.

:thankyou: Mea, Bella, Dennis,  Natalie,  Christina,  Val, Tania, Theresa and Danielle.  I really appreciate you taking a look and then taking the time to give me such encouragement.

Carol.  I agree with Natalies comments.    I think you do a good job on the Train.  I also found some of the pastel papers too toothy for the pastels I was using.  I enjoy working on Mi-Teintes touch board and I love working on colorfix.

Wow Jill how do you get it from looking fuzzy? Does the paper make that much of an improvement? I suppose you would know!
Thank you Natalie, Mea, Jill and Retta! Dennis, I think I may stick with it-I did become accustomed to the mask. (But I do love the watercolors and your classes.)   :cloud9:

Great train, Selen. Love the  smoke
As far as the bump in the paper is concerned   -  two things are possible causes.
1.  Your paper is too thin and/or
2.  You have over sprayed the painting (must only be a very light spray)
Title: Re: PA - Lesson 25 - Steam Train
Post by: Selen on March 21, 2015, 10:45:11 AM
:thankyou: Dennis, I am grateful for your comments on my paintings.
I use Canson Mi Teintes which is 160gr, do you think it
is thin? I saw Ingres paper in the shop it looked much thinner. I live in a flat so it is very difficult to use the spray. I spray it outside the window:) however I wont use spray again unless it is neccesary.
Love
Selen

:thankyou: Jill, i love the way you and Selen have done the smoke.  I think I still have to work on the smoke and as you said on the trees on the right.  Appreciate your comments.

Nice work on the steam train, Danielle.  The trees on the right look like they might be covered with the soot from the smoke on from the train.

Toot! Toot!

Danielle, excellent train and smoke     What worries me are the 3 stripes on the right hand side and equally spaced. Just join the middle stripe and the lower one into one large bush. O0

Hi everyone,

I'm jumping ahead with the classes, just this once. My son loves trains and happens that this class was perfect to give him this gift for his room. So, this is also my rendition to the Steam Train lesson, which is also a free commition. Critics and comments are well received.

Cheers.

Juan your colors look really faded, perhaps this is a bad photograph.

It's a great drawing Juan-you have a lot of tooth left in your paper which makes it look faded. I would personally strengthen the train an smoke colors to bring them out.

Yeah. I guess it's the way a took the picture, the flash maybe. I'll change it. Here are both versions, different light source.

:thankyou: for your comments Bellarina and Natalie, appreciate it.
