Title: How to Draw Cosmos
Post by: Sherri on December 16, 2014, 09:57:52 PM
My posting for this lesson. I thought this was going to be a simple lesson but instead found it very challenging!!  Feedback would be greatly appreciated

Very nice Sherri,   You may want to add some tonal value in the  bottom of the pupils.

Sherri,

Nice job on the petals.

The background seems a bit scratchy.  I found that using a cotton ball (or even a piece of t-shirt) rubbed over a patch of a dark B pencil tracings, then smudged onto your paper makes a good background.  If you have access to the pencil drawing class on doing the lighthouse scene, it's the same technique that Nolan used to start the sky.

Hope that helps.  I used the same technique to add the basic color onto my anthurium before I added the shaded parts.

Natalie, I feel so "art" starved, it is not funny and it seems like this will be the trend for the foreseeable future as I may have to make a trip to S.A. as my sister has been in Hospital for almost 3 weeks after what was supposed to be a simple day surgery and something went wrong.  She has to have another surgery at the end of the month, this will be the third!!!   So I am just waiting to see if and when I have to leave to give her some help.

:thankyou:  Louisa for your sweet comments. I appreciate it.

:thankyou:  Jill, Mea, Selen, Deborah, Robin, Natalie and Nolan for your good wishes, prayers and thoughts for my sister's recovery.  The news is that she was discharged from Hospital today with only 75% mobility and nobody to take care of her at home which makes me cringe at the thought. However, I have just heard that my 78 year old eldest sister is going to assist her tomorrow but is so nervous to drive as she has recently been the victim of what they call a "smash and grab" incident which traumatised her to no end.  So I am just waiting on a call to hear if/when I have to leave and go back to S.A. to help where I can.

This is what makes our Paint Basket such a wonderful place to belong and be a part of .... it is the feeling of "caring and togetherness" which is unique and I am just so happy and proud to be a part of the Paint Basket Family.  Bless you all and thank you once again for your comforting messages.

Used my hemp paper to draw the cosmos.  I think it was too grainy and small for this lesson, but doing the cosmos was fun.

I realize that if I had used a larger and smoother paper, my tonal ranges would have been much better.

Your thoughts please.

Your paper has hurt your background on this drawing, but I can see the flowers have been well drawn, so no problem with the technique :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

When choosing a paper always look at the textures in the drawing. A flower is smooth and soft so you want a smooth and soft looking paper.

If for example you are drawing an elephant with it's rough skin, then a rougher, textured paper could help you lot to get that texture O0

Thanks, Nolan.  When I started, I was happy that the hemp paper allowed me to erase so easily.  Once I was too far into it, did I realize it was the wrong kind of paper.

I'll definitely be sure to use the right type of paper in the future.

Was an interesting lesson, though.  I like the subtle gradations that can be done with the right shading.  I really want to do this one again on large, smooth paper.

Liana,

I will always comment on what I see.  If someone's work is not quite right, I will offer some advice to try to make it better (as many of you have always done for me).

If it is so good that I cannot find anything to say to make it better, I'll just rave about it and try to point out the features that are extra good!!!  (like I did with yours)

I attempted this a bit differently from the lesson as i didn't do the graphite background. i drew the flower free hand as I believe this is how I want to learn to draw. Therefore after watching part of the lesson i then shaded my flower using the coloured photo  as a reference.
