Thanks Danielle, yes I suppose the rolling in the water make them so rounde, first time I ever saw something like this. Now I can also say I sketched a Moeraki boulder. heheheh.

well done Louisa
What you want to look out for is the contrast in each boulder. You need a contrast from the top right to bottom left to show they are round, especially in the front boulder O0

Louisa,

I think you did quite well on these, especially since they are so out-of-the ordinary.

Yes, they are strange looking.  Reminds me of the backs of turtles in the shape of ladybugs.

I want to see more of these and find out why they have that shape.

Wow Nolan, that is awsome, I think i wiil have to do that one.  Such neat rock, i have sean roundish but that round and smooth , never.  The sea must be very rough there to form these rocks.     :yippee:

Here is my try for the Moeraki boulders which was more difficult than it looked.  Thanks for an interesting class again Nolan.  I have a new operating system and I can't edit my photos properly. This picture came out awfully dark. Comments and critiques are always most welcome.  Thank you,  Patricia

Patricia,

You, too, have done well on these curious oddities of nature.  Your posted picture does not appear too dark on my screen.

I did look them up - fascinating.  Lots of images of them on the Internet.

I must add these to my to-do list.

Beautiful job Patricia :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:
You can still make the puddle of water darker to differentiate it from the sand O0

:thankyou: :thankyou:  Mea and Nolan for your lovely comments.  Yes, Mea, like always, I would recommend doing this lesson for it is not as easy as one would think.  I used printer paper which I think is a mistake and my next pencil lesson will be done on something more smooth with less tooth.

Thank you Nolan, I will darken the puddle of water but I am always nervous of going too dark. I do however realise that to differentiate or have a contrast, one has to have the dark in order to see the light. Hope I have phrased that right but I do understand.

:thankyou: :thankyou: :thankyou: :thankyou: Danielle, Ray, Robin and Louisa for your lovely comments about my Moeraki Boulders.

Yes, Danielle they really are quite unusual and I have never seen or heard of them before so we are also getting a history/geography lesson incorporated into our drawing lesson.  Great stuff.

Thank you Ray for your comment about my waves, I must say that I surprised myself for it is the first time that I have got waves to look like waves in graphite ... thanks to Nolan's excellent teaching. Having said that, I must practice more on rocks which I never seem to be able to get right but with practice it will come right.

Thank you all, it is much appreciated.

    Great job Cyril and I would agree with Mea, a little darker in places would really make the boulders stand out.  Perhaps the sea or waves could go a tad darker too. However, your shading is fantastic. It was a great lesson for sure.

your water is nice and shiny, to make it even more shiny I would actually darken the foreground sand a bit more so that your sand is darker than the water (opposite to mine) O0
Title: Re: Moeraki boulders
Post by: Sherri on June 08, 2015, 02:09:28 PM
Nolan,

Darkened the sand.  Not sure if I got it dark enough was afraid to go too dark.  What are your thoughts???

Thanks
Sherri

Title: Re: Moeraki boulders
Post by: nolan on June 08, 2015, 09:22:21 PM
you can continue to darken the foreground like this :
notice that there is a shading between the front and the back to get the depth. There is also a sharper edge where the sand and water meet

Thanks Danielle - went and watched the end of the video again!!  I do need to define the line.  I had it defined more than thought it was too dark so erased it so will redo it but lighter.   After that I think this will be done.

Learned a lot!!
