Title: underwater painting for outdoors
Post by: lynn p. on May 20, 2015, 03:40:08 AM
I've been posting my questions about this under Oil Painting General Chat as I had planned to paint it in oil but now decided that I will try and finish it in acrylic, given that I want to do a Resin finish on it and hang outdoors.  Quite a challenge as it is huge, 3x6 feet.  It is a WIP.  Still haven't even blocked it in fully, so this is just a rough underpainting--but tons of fun so far.  Worked for 6 hours and still many hours to go.

thought I would add updates here.  6 more hours.  Very slow going.  Haven't even touched the left corner.  Thanks Liz, I will add those great bubbles last and agree that I will part those lips.

3' x 6' - aren't you the adventurous one! I have trouble with 9" x12" paintings. It looks like it's going to be an interesting painting. Good Luck with it, you're off to a good start.

Looking good!  Remember to add in a stream of air bubbles, too, and part the lips a little bit.  At least give an impression of exhaling under water and/or puff up the cheeks some more.  Since your painting is so large, I think you can add these effects.  My grandchildren like to swim under water and we've taken some photos, too and the bubbles are their biggest thing!  Have fun!   :)

Thanks for your comments Mea, dansartclass, dbald8, Liz and Val.  I agree with all you said Liz.  This is a serious challenge.  Worked several hours today and because it is so large, I ended the day feeling like I hadn't done much.  I can see that motivation is going to be my challenge as it is a long term project.  I posted the next stage above next to the first.

What a fun project! Is this from your imagination? Don't think about how many hours it will take to complete this - instead, think how many years of enjoyment you will get looking at this outdoors!

Nina, Natalie, dbald8 and Christina--thanks tons for commenting.  You guys are always there even when I am not so I really appreciate it.  Here is the final.  I basically just reinforced some colors and worked on bubbles.  Hope it reads as underwater. It's a bit cartoonish but it actually works from afar.  It is so huge that it is not too great up close.

Really great work! It doesn't read cartoonish at all-the abstract of the water and Baxter work well with each other. You did a great job making it read underwater. I feel like going swimming now.  O0

Oh Dan, thanks for the compliment. Hah, Natalie--it kinda makes me want to hop in too.  Now I must do one of my other grandson or he'll always feel slighted.  Sharon, that's a high compliment coming from you.  Love your work.  Bella, thanks tons.  I think I will try and varnish and hang it this weekend.  We'll see what the UV light, bugs and heat do to it :P

What a beautiful piece!  As a mural it must be simply stunning.  Hope the star on the painting loves it and is proud of it.

Lynn,

Wow, what a great job you did on this.  Yes, the underwater look is clearly evident.  Oh, I'd love to be there to see everyones' reactions to it.

WOW - WOW- WOW.

Oh thanks Val, Danielle, Annie, Mea and Tony.  It is sitting in my kitchen awaiting the varnish I ordered from Golden (with UV protection).  Funny Annie, the star of the show in the painting is not happy that I made his cheeks full of air and have bubblies all around him.  Already vain at 6.  :)
