Thank you Nolan for an interesting class again.  Here is my submission which I did on Woodbridge Medium Surface paper but I find that the paper is too rough as the camera picked up the tooth in the paper but it doesn't show up in the original drawing. Comments and critiques welcomed with gratitude.    Patricia

This is my revised drawing. Amazing what a difference a little shading makes.  I also darkened the numbers on the jet and the pilot's jacket.  Thank you Nolan and everyone for your critique and suggestions which I appreciate so much.   Patricia

Nicely done Patricia.  I would add a little more value under the nose of the plane.  You forgot the number lol.  Otherwise great job.  I'm looking forward to attempting this drawing.  I'm so far behind I want to cry :)

Patricia,

Nice job on the fighter plane.  You do fog well.

Nolan has really challenged us on this.

As soon as I get my computer back from the repair shop, I want to do this.

:thankyou:  Jill for your comments and critique which I really appreciate. I shall go in and darken under the nose. The number 101 is actually on the jet but it is hard to see in the photograph.  I am in the same situation as you, so much to do but no time.  I am behind in everything too and I often wonder if I will ever catch up!!!

:thankyou: Mea for your lovely comments and it is a challenge to do fog but Nolan teaches well. Looking forward to seeing your drawing when you get your computer back which I hope will be soon.

:thankyou:  Natalie for always being so encouraging.

Excellent work on the jet fighter, Ray.  Maybe need a bit more blurriness with the edges of the fog. ( I'll know better once I try this one myself.
)

I get my laptop back today so hope to get to this drawing ASAP.

We've been missing for awhile but now I'm actively bringing art back into our homeschooling day. This is only the second project - Rachel chose the pen and ink rose last week so it's only fair that Ryan gets to do his favourite topic - aviation  ;D He tells me this is actually an F-14 Tomcat. Their sketches from today:

Rachel's

Ryan's

Ryan was complaining about his rough sketch paper, prefers it smoother

Thanks for the responses. Rachel is actually in her final semester now and has always had an interest in art. I'm hoping she will learn the techniques to make her art even better. Ryan at 14 has an interest in drawing planes of course, and has just started drawing figures.

Rachel does have her own account here but is happier for me to add her work for comment.

OK, so I have watched the video, one question I have before I start, and that is when Nolan uses the eraser, every 5-10 seconds he takes it off screen to clean... what is the best way to do this?
Title: Re: Fighter Jet
Post by: MaryAnne Long on July 25, 2015, 03:00:55 AM
This fighter jet was challenging fun.  Loved doing the mist.  Nice skill to have in my toolbox now.

Did have a little trouble with the windows in the cockpit.  Nolan, how could I have made them look better?  Had the inside darker, but it looked too dark so I erased most of the value.

Adrian, I use a Prismacolor Magic Rub eraser to "erase" the graphite from my other erasers.  I like the stick erasers best.  I did buy an electric one, but it's too fast for me to control.

Look forward to constructive comments on this effort.

    A very good try Mea.  With regard to the cockpit, I would lighten the left front window more and the second mechanic is lost in the steam, I would make him more visible.  Otherwise a very good drawing in my humble opinion.

Adrian, with regard to the cleaning of your erasers, you could wipe them on a piece of rough cloth. Nolan often rubs them on his jeans and that does the trick.

wow, great job Rachel, Ryan and Mea :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

To clean my eraser, I rub it over my pants - I am usually wearing jeans so it cleans with one wipe.

Mea - just use your pen shaped eraser to fiddle in a few suggestions of detail into the windows so it looks like you can see the stuff on the inside of the cockpit O0

Here's my first (unfinished) attempt... I even managed to snap my pencil in the same place as Nolan... pressing too hard!

I need to make sure that I have something thicker under the paper - on the underside of the left wing I can see the wood grain from the table!

Also... the steam (yes it is steam, not mist as the F14 Tomcat uses a steam launch mechanism from the aircraft carrier)... looks more like someone tried to rub out some graphite with an eraser rather than steam to me. I think that technique will need some practice!... hints please!!

I was impressed with how the light through the cockpit glass worked, but I must get a better 'eraser pen'... I had trouble getting one, and the one I did has a 'point' about 4mm thick...  :(

O0 Nice work Adrian.  Your steam looks good but probably needs a smoothing over in places with a cloth. However, Nolan will give you his advice when he manages to see it.   Looking forward to the finished drawing.

Adrian,

I agree - you did a good job on this.  You did a great job on the cockpit.  I had trouble with that, but it looked better after I made the tweaks that Nolan suggested.

I use a blending stick and rub it around the steam to add a more blotchy look to it.

Thanks for the comments about attempt #1, here is my second effort.

Rather than adjusting the original I thought I would start again. I used better backing this time, and managed to get the dark areas without texture of the table beneath!

I also smoothed over the steam again after the first 'rub out' and it seemed to make a better finish.

One area I see is that the left wing is too fat towards the tip, the top and bottom surface are too parallel.
