Title: How to paint impressionistic flowers
Post by: dirk123 on July 16, 2015, 02:42:00 PM
I had not painted for a while. This lesson seemed a good one to make a new start.

Thanks Natalie, Patricia and Harwant. I had not worked with the knife before,
but if you carefully follow in Nolans footsteps, it works very well.

Dirk,

This flower pot painting is fantastic.  Not sure about the "impressionistic" part, as everything looks so realistic.  The flowers are so well done, I want to pick them.  Love the depth in your background.

I want to do that one as soon as I catch up on things.

Beuatiful Dirk!

Nolan, can we please do something similar in Acrylic!  :)

Thanks Nolan and Mea.
Mea, if you zoom in on the flowers you can see there are only dashes of paint, no real details.

I really enjoyed this lesson.  Nice to know that you can make believable flowers without slaving over every petal.

I love the composition Nolan chose for this.

I know my door panels are not perfect, but I am proud of my pot (as symmetrical as I could get it); the flowers; and my cut stone pieces.

Any suggestions gratefully accepted.

Thanks, ladies.

Val - I must confess that I gave up on the knife painting on the flowers and had to stipple them to get them finished. I have to learn to control the knife better.  The flowers could still use better shading, though.

Patricia - I love this, too.  I will try the same technique on other flowers.

Mary Lou - I am quite proud of the pot.

Thanks, Dirk.

I really like the knife technique now that the painting is drying.  There's such volume and dimension.  I did use a stippling brush towards the end because I could not control the knife.  I just need to practice more.
This was a very rewarding lesson.

   Nice  shiny pot Sharon.   The bottom part of the vase is rounded a bit to much look at the sample with the paper roll Nolan showed in the lesson , you will see what I mean.   ( make straight lines on a piece of paper then glue it on an empty paper roll)  this is good to keep as a helper.

Wow, Danielle, that is an origional version. The white on the walls looks a bit like snow, but it could not be if the flowers are in bloom?.

Good on you, Danielle.  Wish I had your confidence to take a lesson and apply the techniques in a different composition.   Lovely, especially the door panels.

Yesterday, a friend came into my studio and fell in love with my version of this.  So, it became her wedding gift.  She was so happy as red geraniums are her favorite flower.

Left to my own devices (drawing) I find I am useless at proportion and following lines.

Help Nolan, sonething looks skew to me, definitely sonething to do with the door, but I
cant put my finger on it!  Can you tell me what is wrong.  This is one of those paintings that would drive me crazy because something is not quite right :2funny: :2funny:

Title: Re: How to paint impressionistic flowers
Post by: Val on September 17, 2015, 11:24:09 AM
Nicely painted, I think what may be bothering you is the vertical/horizontal lines in the door are all 'leaning', making it feel a bit of kilter. Other than that it's beautifully done.
Title: Re: How to paint impressionistic flowers
Post by: dirk123 on September 17, 2015, 01:48:55 PM
:painting:maybe remove the lowest stone of the wall. Now the wall is quite a bit in ftont of the pot, but the flowers are in front of the wall.
Title: Re: How to paint impressionistic flowers
Post by: nolan on September 17, 2015, 08:53:56 PM
great job, especially on the weathering of the door :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

There are two things wrong that Dirk & Val have pointed out:
1) Verticals remain vertical
2) The two flowers on the left can't overlap the wall according to the distance you have created. To allow them to over lap, you would need to show the floor higher up on the left. Alternately you would need to "hide" the two flowers by cutting the off where they disappear behind the wall (my favourite solution as you won't loose any depth)

Thanks Patricia.  I just find it fun and since it is a hobby, there is no pressure except to challenge myself.  You never know unless you try..oils scared the heck out of me the first time but Nolan is an excellent teacher and PB really teaches art well.   I took lessons from a professional artist recently and she didn't teach nearly as well as Nolan and Dennis.  It wasn't a total loss as I did learn a couple of new things but all in all, you cant beat the education you get here!!

Zayn,

Fabulous job on this.  Love the way you painted the peeling paint, even the knot hole in the wood.  Cut stone looks great.

I think the geranium flowers need more shadowed spaces to make them pop more.  Check the reference photo.  I looked back at mine and realized I should have done that, too.

Wasn't this a fun painting?  One of my favorite lessons.

it is easy to get carried away with the knife, that is why it is so quick to paint with it, so you have to keep holding yourself back.
You have done a great job. I love the reflections on the pot. :yippee: :yippee: :yippee:

Thanks  Nolan.  Now that I step back and look at the pot, I see where the shadow that you talk about appears to only be one value off of the concrete that the pot is sitting on, this needs to go darker.

I love this painting and the frame is simple but brings out the color of the pot, well I think.

Hi everyone.  Please take a look at this painting, is it one that you would sell?  I noticed the shadow with hard edges rather than soft ones. I wished I would have noticed this sooner, before varnishing it.

If you have a buyer, go for it O0

I agree Ginger, if a buyer is at hand, sell it. People may not even notice your concern... they´ll be enthralled with the flowers and lovely reflections on the pot.  O0
Besides, you weren´t going to tell anyone were you?!  :nono:      ;D

Congrats Ginger. Enjoy the appreciation from a buyer. I'm sure the painting is talking to the buyer.
