Dennis, I am having a problem with the Reference Photographs.  When I click on it, I get a white blank screen. Nevertheless, I will try to access it again in the morning as it is past my bedtime.

I get the same thing as Patricia - a blank screen when I click on the reference photo. Really looking forward to this lesson - I watched the first 45 mins and it looks like such fun to paint!

Thanks, everyone - it was good to take a lesson again - it's been a while since I've had the time to do one. And I see what you mean about that inside horse, Val - I'll make some adjustments and will post again...Patricia - I know once you redo your lesson that it's going to be fabulous - so no horsing around!!

Sharon,

With this experience under your belt, you need to pick up a horse racing stadium for a client.

Nice work.  Can really feel the speed of the horses.

Thank you Dennis for a fun lesson which I found somewhat challenging.  I lost my lines, couldn't get your colours to match but you said that was O.K. which made me feel better.  Comments and critiques are welcomed with gratitude.  Thank you.  Patricia

P.S.  It never fails to amaze me that once you submit your work, you can see so many things which could have been improved and not seen before.  I think one is so close to the problems that you can't see them!!   :o

 :heeha: Beautifully done Patricia.  O0

Remember that colours are extremely fluid (especially in wc), just the tiniest extra drop of water will change the colour/intensity. So even if painting from the same brand and colours as Dennis, it most likely will still have it's differences once applied to the paper. Even Dennis has said that if he painted the same picture twice, there would be differences. So no more colour worries right?  ;)

Excellent work.

Patricia,

Your horse racing painting is beautiful - vivid colors.  Great grass.

I would have gotten the legs all entangled, but you did them so perfectly.  Oh, wait, the third one looks like he is wearing high-top, blue and yellow sneakers!  Anybody else see that?

Patricia, Excellent painting. All you guys are really starting to excel
That blue and yellow "sneaker" is a protection wrap. You see many athletes and especially rugby players with them around their thighs and knees.

:thankyou: So much for your lovely comments Mea.  With regard to the horses' legs being tangled, if I never had Dennis holding my hand, I probably would have had their legs around their necks. lol!!! Thank heavens that we have such wonderful tutors without whom, I would never be able to accomplish what I have. With reference to the leg wraps, I could have subdued the colours a bit but then as I said in a previous post, we see all these things after the fact but thanks for noticing Mea.

:thank you: Dennis and Jill - and well done, Patricia! Glad I'm not the only horse in this race!! I agree - the legs got me confused - sometimes I didn't know which bodies went with which limbs...had to take a step back periodically to get them all straight. If you ever watch a horse race, this is not unusual!

:thankyou:  So much Sharon for your lovely comments. I had to laugh at your first post telling me to stop "horsing around" ... pretty comical!!!   I actually found the subject difficult and challenging but still fun, so you are not alone with being momentarily confused as to which legs belonged to which horse.  Anyway, as per usual, you did a super job Sharon as always.

Terrific paintings, Sharon and Pat.  This really looks like a great lesson.

I can't fathom that I've been since March, not being able to paint!!  I hope these drugs get me well so very soon....I miss my brushes and pastels.  I love being able to see what you all have been up to, though. Keeps me with a 'want' that won't quit.  I watch all of my lessons, and sure get the 'itch', but my bod won't cooperate yet. SOON!!    :banghead: :promise:

(Gee whiz...I just went back and read my post!  No, I don't want any cheese with this!!    I'm just frustrated!

Hi Kathy, I wish I knew what it is that you have to click  I have seen different posts where that has been mentioned but I have never really taken note of what you have to do. I think Nolan can change something or would be able to tell you. Either wait for someone more onto it than me or maybe send Nolan a message through PB and he can check. Obviously Dennis can see it so some can see. I really hope it gets sorted for you as forum and feedback is one of the best parts of PB  :) :flowers:

Looks great to me Carol,  :yippee:  :yippee: the horse look really well done.

Is the left hand horse and rider supposed to look monochrome? The rest are lovely bright jockey colours but with the one in the left the rider colours match the horse and I wonder if adding some colour to the jockey with help him pop.
Title: Re: LESSON #104 - Horse Racing
Post by: Val on September 28, 2015, 11:36:38 AM
Agreed Carol, a splash of colour on that jockey and you'll be well and away. A bit more variance in value would give you more depth, example would be to darken the colour on the lead horse, the jockey (yellow silks) looks fine.
Very nice work Carol.

Great job on a challenging lesson, Carol - and welcome back to painting - you've been missed! The only suggestion I have is to lift out some color on the horse on the left - he's supposed to be more white than gray - and that will help differentiate him from the jockey...giddyup!

Post by: dennis on September 29, 2015, 08:14:42 AM
Carol, excellent after a long layoff    The shading in the grass has to ground at a slope instead of flat ground. The left horse is in the air so the shadow must be lower down. Check the reference photograph and my painting. O0
