Hi everyone,
This class came just in time. I like cats, so I might as well give it a try. I left my rendition for you to comment and crits please. Very interesting lesson, specially the eye construction.

WOW!!! Juan, your cat is FANTASTIC. You have done a superb job. It looks like a photograph and you must be very proud of your work. Frame it and hang it on your wall.

Juan carlos,
Lovely work on the cat. I think the white circular patches around the nose need to be shaded a bit more around the edges so they do not stand out so much.
The eyes are so beautiful. Meow.

:heeha: Brilliant Juan! Yes, the eyes are fascinating the way they are built up. The eyes were my favourite part on the tiger as well. I'll get to this one..... sometime!

-
Very nicely done Juan Carlos    As Mea has spotted, just finish off the shading in the whites near the mouth to accentuate the rounding.
-
Juan: Nice cat. Just a little shadow in the white like Dennis said would make a big difference. A little softening in the dark fur on the left side would be good. Kathy
-
Fantastic painting Juan!!!
-
Hi all,
I feel very encouraged by all the words you guys post it. Thanks Patricia, Mea, Val, Kathy and JayJ for your important remarks. And Dennis, thank you so much for this lesson and your comments too. I'll work the whites as soon as I'm back and post it.
Cheers

I may be shooting myself before I'm done.... but I've decided to give this one a go. The fur can't be as bad as the swan's feathers....can it? :eyesclosed: Right then, off to the funny farm we go! :heeha:
:painting:
-
Go ahead Val. You can do it. I really think you'll dominate that little fur head!!!
-
On my way to get my pastels out again.....I had to move some w/c 'stuff'....I was painting today! Should have this finished tomorrow! :heeha:
Then the pastels come out!!! :yippee:
-
What a delightful painting. You did an awesome job on the fur, color and especially, the eyes. It's a great painting. Congrats....it's puuur   rfect.
-
Lovely work Juan
-
:thankyou: Dennis for a lovely lesson. I struggled with the eyes somewhat and could not apply more pastel to the right eye as it would not take it. However, I enjoyed the challenge. Comments and critiques are always welcomed. Thank you. Patricia
-
Outstanding, Patricia! :yippee: :yippee: The eyes look great to me. The difference from the lesson helps to make this painting yours. Over the summer we adopted a Maine Coon Cat kitten. She's just starting to come into her own and is taking on that bobcat look. I'd love to be able to paint her someday.
-
:thankyou: Steve for your encouragement. So pleased to hear that you adopted a kitten and you must paint her for it makes the painting of a loved pet so special. Be sure to show us when you do paint her.

Lovely, lovely cat, Patricia.
The quality of your work astounds me every time.

Mea, :thankyou: so much, you have a way of lifting me up to dizzy heights. I was worried about the quality of my work because I am working in the night, which seems to be my only free time and my eyes aren't so good anymore so I do struggle but thank you for always being so encouraging. Bless you.
Patricia

No problem, Patricia. It is still a very well executed painting - and that is what counts
-
:thankyou: so much Dennis for always encouraging us too. It means so much to me. Thank you. Patricia

Beautiful painting Juan and Patricia.
Patricia did you know that there is a "workable fixatif from Krylon" you can add more pastel on it when dried. Still you did a great pastel
Painting.
:yippee: :yippee: :yippee: to the both of you.
-
:thankyou: for your message Danielle. Yes, I do remember about the workable fixative but I am not to keen on spraying anything for my chest closes with some odours which sends me into a panic as I can't breathe so I leave spraying very much alone but thanks so much for the suggestion. Strange to say, some odours I can handle but others almost kill me.

:heeha: Patricia!!! Beautiful work on the cat. O0 If you had not mentioned the eye I would never have noticed anything amiss....they still look gorgeous to me :detective: and I'm looking! ;D You and I apparently suffer from the same condition..... self-critic-itis  No fear....there is a cure! :stress: :2funny:
All of my art stuff has been packed away ready for our move up to Belize, but this is the next pastel for me. I should have much more free time once up in Belize.
-
:thankyou: Val for always coming to my aid ... what is the cure for self-critic-itis??? Look into your crystal ball and let me know please :2funny: .
Looking forward to seeing your rendition of the cat when you are in Belize with more time on your hands. Smooth sailing and safe travels.

:heeha: Your cat is perfect, Patricia. I don't even see the eye problem. The cats or yours. ;) You are producing amazing and beautiful work at a rapid pace AND at night. It seems to me you are handling the lighting quiet well. :yippee:
-
Kathy :thankyou: for your lovely message. I am SO FAR behind in my artwork and was becoming overwhelmed so I am trying to catch up by doing art in the nights. Thank you for always being so encouraging which really spurs me on. :flowers: :flowers:

Dear Patricia. Love your work on the cat. Beautifully painted. The shadows are given it the right forms and the eyes are very alived.
-
:thankyou: Juan for your very sweet message which I appreciate immensely. Patricia

:thankyou: Val for always coming to my aid ... what is the cure for self-critic-itis??? Look into your crystal ball and let me know please :2funny: .
Well..... I have tried the tape :stress: method, but that hasn't worked so well as it turns out... it slowed me down to a grumble and a mumble.... but it turns out I can still type! :faint: :2funny:
I'm sure there is hope for us self-critic-itis sufferers... I'll keep looking. :detective:
 There's always Dennis' solution.... :knuppel2:  :run: :2funny:
-
Just seen your hilarious message Val. You are one special gal. Patricia
-
Well, i am starting over. I tried working on it some more the other day (horrid weather, too rough, nasty squalls), and I only succeeded in giving this poor creature a horrid black eye! :o My attempts at correcting the situation only made it worse  so that is gone and done and i'm starting again. :strong:
-
Val, I am sure when the sea calms and you get to paint the cat to its finality, you will have done a superb job as all your art is. You are so capable and such an inspiration to us all. Patricia
-
Val
You can do it. Don't give up on the cat. You have the artist' skill to accomplish the task. :painting:
-
Thanks Patricia, and Juan. I have finished the eyes!!! :yippee: What else is there to do at 0145 in the morning?! :heeha:
I also started to have a go at a freehand of Nolan's effe (elephant) in my sketchbook! :tooth:
When the urge strikes.... you just have to go with it! :goofy: :2funny:
-
:2funny: :2funny: :2funny: Val, you are a laugh a minute. Just so precious, please don't ever change. Patricia
-
Only because you don't want me to... :nana: :heeha:
-
:2funny: :2funny: :2funny: Hilarious, love it. Patricia
-
Most of his face is done, had to stop last night as I forgot to charge up the battery and my little computer died. My printer isn't working well at all so need to work from the screen. Doing my best to fix proportions as I go, but I think it's coming along ok. Hoping to find an art shop.... I really need to get some more colours! ^-^
-
Val, I have no doubt that when finished, the cat's portrait is going to be top class. Patricia
-
Almost done, I was hoping to have him finished before the pastel party ;)
Anyway, just thought I'd show what I have. Is anyone else using the pan pastels? I can always use a few pointers!
-
Looking good so far, Val!   Don't forget to work on the cat's left ear. Without the hair it looks like the ear is turned backward. :)
-
Thanks Steve, yes I haven't done the hairs or whiskers as yet. Funny thing with the pan pastel, seems the pencils don't want to work overtop of the pan pastel. Will have to think a bit more on that one. Hoping I'll find an art shop in Mexico that will have the pans, I really need some of the colourless blending pastel, will help make blending and transitions much easier.
Appreciate your comments. :)
-
Val. Amazing execution of the cat. As far as it goes, it's going to turn into a great painting.
I haven't tried pan pastels yet; I was looking those the other day on Blick. They are not sold around here, so I'll probably have to order them and be shipped to try them. Maybe Dennis have a better opinion about it.
Cheers
-
Dennis hasn't tried them as yet.... maybe with a little coercing?! >:D
They don't work quite the same as the stick pastels, big learning curve for me. If you do buy them, make certain you get one of the colourless blending pans. I'm on the hunt for some, makes the blending/transition of colours much easier. The pastel pencils don't seem to work over top of the pan pastel. Still trying to figure out how I'm going to add the whiskers.
Thanks for your comments. Much appreciated. :)
-
Excellent so far, Val
-
   Val, I have just seen your cat painting and it is FABULOUS so far. I don't have any pan pastels and in fact, am looking for them to try but nobody seems to have them around my area ... so will try and get them in the States at month end as we are going to Florida for a week.
Patricia
-
Thank you much Dennis. :cloud9: I think I made the chin too wide... Will have to stay as is for this one (future reference).
-
Thank you Patricia, as soon as I figure out the whisker dilemma I can call it done. :crazy2:
-
Absolutely amazing work..Patricia ,Val!!!!
-
Thanks Zayn, much appreciated. :flowers:
-
:thankyou: so much Zayn. Patricia
-
Beautiful cat so far Val, with a bit of hair drawn into it it will be great.
-
Thank you Danielle, you are a sweetie. :-*
Am still trying to get the whiskers to show across the face, some success but not what I wanted. Will leave as is before I muck it up more. So just the hairs up on the ears and I'm done. Final posting coming shortly.
-
I'm done. Had some issues trying to get the whiskers and ear hairs to show over the pan pastel. Could have been the paper just wouldn't take anymore pastel(?). Anyway, finally sorted it, not to my satisfaction, but considering this one done. Whew! :faint:
-
   Absolutely stunning Val. Top class work. You never disappoint us, I just knew it would be outstanding. Patricia
-
Val,
Meow!!! Nice job. Love the depth in the eyes.
I did buy a package of soft pastels in stick form. Now you guys are springing "pan" pastels at me - Yikes, the pastel world is confusing.

I know what you mean, Mea. There are so many mediums and options within the mediums. We certainly will never run out of fun stuff to explore. :D

 Ta much Patricia, Mea, Kathy, Steve, and Fiona. I had some serious doubts about this fellow....but then, when do I not?! ;D I find I must admit though... it did come out better than my autumn live class! :heeha: :2funny:
Mea, I had intended on buying the stick pastels like everyone else.....but the pan pastels were on sale, and I was told they were 'so easy' to use much like w/c. Well, we all know the struggles I have there! :faint: It worked out that I could get more colours by buying one of the pan kits  :cost: so I bought the pans. They don't blend easily with the fingers like the sticks, and I found out later that I should have bought a couple of pans of colourless blender which I'm told makes blending the colours much easier. I love the effect of the pans, but still a bit of a steep learning curve ahead. But hey...I'm up for it! :heeha: :goofy: :pullhair: :2funny:
-
Val, your best    :yippee: :yippee:
Dennis!!! :'( love you :-* :cloud9: :parachute: :yippee: Ok....that's all I have to say.

Stunning Val!u deserve to be on :cloud9: !!

Many thanks Zayn, I am quite excited about these pastels. Already looking at another lesson and have a few photos of mine I want to have a go at... I feels like I'm picking up speed on this slippery slope! :heeha:
-
Val. Great painting. :yippee: :yippee: I knew you could do it. Keep it up!!
-
Thanks so much Juan for your faith and continued encouragement. :-*

Stunning Val

Thank you Win, I have to admit it is starting to grow on me. Just wish I hadn't made his chin so wide.
